Reference Kawait, Afganistan:

Things have sure changed. During my 14 months in ROK in the 80's, I made a grand total of two (2) telephone calls to my wife. Each cost me more than $100. She did, however, come over for two weeks on a Korean government subsidized program called "Reunion in Korea".
She flew on KAL Flight 013 two weeks after KAL 007 was shot down by the Russians. I had to assure her, in a letter, that 13 is not an unlucky number for Koreans, instead 4 is.
Today, I would have been able to video call her every night, just so long as we were able to work out a time that worked for both of us with the 16 hour time difference. If was kind of sad that my two year old son didn't recognize me when I returned.

when I was in Vietnam there was no phone calls home, when I was on temp duty to Okinawa we could call through the MARS.
MARS was, people with Ham radio's that would patch their radio transmission to a telephone. you got 3 minutes and it was a collect from the operators phone to your home. You were never guaranteed be able to talk or complete the call.

My son was at an FOB in Afghanistan. He had internet access, but he paid well over $100/month for it.
That still bugs me to this day. He didn’t seem to mind though. He said
“What else am I gonna buy here?
