One of the factors I haven't seen mentioned is your debt to available credit percentage. If cancelling the card decreases the amount of your available credit to the point where you have little available credit left (due to higher balances on other cards) your credit score goes down. Why not just charge a little something to the card and then pay it off the next month?

i still have a Sears credit card that is a MasterCard issued by CitiBank even though I don't think there is an active Sears store for 30 miles in any direction. I didn't want to take a hit on my credit rating by cancelling the card, so it is my dedicated credit card for the internet juke box at the VFW.

We have a sears card just for a backup. I use it occasionally to keep it active.

My Wife was an Assistant Manager for KMart. She retired about the time Kmart bought Sears. Biggest mistake that KMart ever made!

I got a similar letter relating to a CC with my bank. It got stuffed in the safe when they offered me a cash back card. Why didn't they just update the original? Probably because in some pencil neck's mind more of "our" cards in the system is a "good thing". I'm going to let the offending card time out. I have another for back up in any case.

Years ago ruthless Citibank took over Sear's credit and much increased the minimum payment level.
That ended my interest in keeping a Sear's card.

Sears? Unless, I am trying to get the warranty enforced on a Craftsman hand tool, I never go to Sears anymore. They have nothing that I - or apparently anyone else - want(s). My last purchases were very disappointing, and when I took them back they would not honor their warranties and I left power tools and some disintegrating clothing on their counter. I may not get my money back, but their junk was not going to litter my house and garage. Not your father's Sears.
