I like black eye peas anytime. Grew up eating fresh one from the farm. We had a small patch planted on the ranch and one of my jobs was to pick and shell them. Been wanting some but having problems finding any at the store. Homey is also hard to find. Guess these Yankees just don’t know good country eating.

Nothing finer than sitting on the porch with a huge bucket of Black Eyes, shelling and watching the world go by. Just don't care for the picking part.

The Christmas ham hock will be used well when I make a great pot of bean soup this year. (And every year.) Corn bread made on the cast iron, bean soup, and staying in the house and watching the snow fall on a football field somewhere; or out my window. Mine are picked off the grocery store shelf! I have no idea where they come from! (I'm North of the Mason-Dixon Line!)

Another tradition our family had was to bury a dime outside New Year’s Eve and then dig it up New Year’s Day This was supposed to ensure prosperity in the new year. never had any proof it worked but it was fun to do

Love me some blackeyed peas. Any time. Any place. They're not just for New Year in my book.

Sauerkraut with pork roast or chops, link sausage, kielbasa, & hot dogs. A big pile of mashed potatoes with a gob of butter here.

Yeah, the pork & kraut seems to be tradition around here.I'm sure that woman that married me will be making that. (The love of my life!...wife, not the kraut!)
I'll save the ham hock for Super Bowl.

We did the whole good luck routine with collards, blackeye peas, and anything else we could think of last year. Don't think it took...

Actually prefer Purple Hull Peas.
Bush cans them but they are scare enough here in NM.
So Little Brother Black eyes it is!
I think I have a can in the kitchen.
The only hang up is I’ll probably have a big batch of Ham and Beans by then.
I’ll cook the bottom of my Xmas Ham with Great Northern Beans.
I eat some, give some to my Kids and freeze the rest.
Well now - I have eaten a ton of Purple Hull Peas.
Did not know this- from those smart Bush folks up in Tenn.

Like their relatives the blackeye pea and crowder pea, purple hull peas are actually beans. But these tender beans have a flavor all their own. Ours are picked once the pod or "hull" turns from green to purple, then shelled and slow cooked for you to enjoy. Try them with cornbread!

As a kid, all the neighbors would load up and go to the U pick ‘em field, and get hampers full of black eyed peas. Someone would go to the hardware store and rent the pea sheller. Kids would snap the green snaps, adults ran the sheller. You knew you were growing up if you got to run the sheller.

Bkack-eyed peas, mashed potatoes, pork chops, hot buttermilk biscuits.
And it isn't just for New Years. But a dang good way to start.
