USPS slow? Update: Packages arrived
Last August, I ordered some bullets from Precision Bullets, Kemp, Texas. Later that month, my wife ordered bullets to be used as a Christmas gift for me. Long story short, due to COVID delays, both orders were finally shipped out in January. My order has been parked in a USPS distribution center in Texas since January 13th and my wife's order is stalled in Indiana. Is anyone else having problems with stalled packages?
Our regular mail is fine and we have received other packages (nothing heavy) with no major delays. It just seems odd to me that both packages from the same place, shipped at nearly the same time, are both stalled.
PS. I posted this before I saw the other thread on this very issue. Sorry for the duplication.
Update: Both packages arrived late afternoon, yesterday. The tracking did not show any updates at all until they were at our local post office and then out for delivery. We got them in late afternoon, the latest we have ever gotten our mail. We normally get our mail no later than 10:30AM. The post master said there was so much mail and packages to deliver, it was crazy. Really unusual for a small, rural post office like ours.

I don't want to say they're slow, but I sent a package from NC to a friend in GA a few days back and when I checked last night, the package was in Portland, OR!
(For the geography challenged, that's 3,000 miles away on the wrong coast, when it was only a few hours away by car.)
Somebody's asleep at the wheel and I doubt it will make the expected delivery date set for tomorrow.

Two instances of their recent ineptness.
1.) I mailed a Priority Mail package to Lakeland, Florida. Lakeland is 113 miles from me. I would have thought it would take two days. No, it took five days.
2.) A friend mailed a letter to me from Pa. Normally it takes 4 days. This last letter took 8 days.
This is a sad state of affairs for the USPS. I can remember when I would mail a letter home and get the answer back in 8 days and that was from Viet Nam.

My out of state family just got their Christmas cards last week. They were mailed two weeks before Christmas. My wife sent her family packages via “Priority” USPS (or whatever they call it, she paid a lot of money for expedited handling) and they took a month to get there...!
As for cause, is it the China pandemic, or this just evidence of a downward spiraling, bloated, inefficient government-run agency. Or both? I say both.
If you are buying online and have an option, DO NOT choose USPS...

Yup, mailed a priority package a week ago from Colorado to Ohio. Was supposed to be delivered this past Friday. Just got an email alert that it’s “enroute to the destination”.
**Just got another email saying expected delivery is tomorrow, the 19th"-not surprised due to the holiday. Very frustrating.**
Saturday I sent an Express envelope that is supposed to be delivered Tuesday, all it shows is “label created”.
On the plus side some Pachmayr grips I ordered Friday on Amazon were delivered Saturday!

The good thing about this, I'm not getting any junk mail, I'm afraid some day they will drop of a few trash bags full.

When I order things I always ensure that it's being sent USPS Priority Mail. If it comes First Class Parcel Post it might sit on a dock somewhere for a few days until there is room on the truck.
If the vendor wants to ship UPS, then I'm sure it'll come on time but be broken. If that is their preferred shipper I'll first look for the item elsewhere.
If the shipper is Sure Post (UPS / USPS handoff) that's not even a remote option.

My range buddy ordered 1000 223 bullets on Dec. 3 .They are still sitting at the sorting center in Lake Mary , about 60 miles from his house . You're not allowed at the sorting centers , so all he could do was start a complaint . The tracking# says it's still there , but it's probably gone . The price of stuff like that , someone figured they'd make some money . I would think smuggling a box of 1000 bullets out in your lunch box would be hard to do .

I was still getting political mail 6 days after the Georgia runoff and I got my American Rifleman with voting recommendations 3 days after the runoff.

I ordered a small enveloped gun parts from Ohio to Oregon. It sat in Hawaii for five days enroute. Lucky package.

Adding the annual holiday volume to the Covid crunch seems to have resulted in epic failures. We sent Christmas cards to the kids with checks enclosed, mailed about December 12, last one arrived January 9. All domestic first class mail, usually 3 or 4 days anywhere in the US.
I hope none of the vaccines are being sent by USPS, might get there about the time that a 5th or 6th virus mutation is detected.

I mailed a check to Florida on December 14. After almost three weeks, I put a stop payment on it, put a new one in an envelope, put that envelope in a box, and sent it via UPS...at a cost of $16. The original check has still not arrived.

I sent our son and family their Christmas package on December 15. It arrived on January 15, exactly one month to the day. Tulsa to Albuquerque is pretty much a straight shot to the west. Following the tracking shows that it went through Portland, Oregon before going to Albuquerque. Your tax dollars at work.

As a consequence I noticed January bills coming in with huge late fees added in. These were bills I paid early in December and weren't credited until the end of the month. I called Exxon and Home Depot and they waived the late charges. Last week I received a bill on the day before it was due. It's always something!

I am becoming an ex-Luddite or at worst a mini-Luddite. With the problems I had with bill payments being delivered barely in time or outright late by the Post Office even before the Covid issues, I finally set up the ability to pay most of my bills electronically. With being able to get some of my bills off the internet, I can have bills paid before the paper statement gets here. It also saves a bundle in stamps.

Last week I got 113 pieces of mail total. 106 were junk mail and all on time! 6 were bills that took 8 days to cross town and my Stimulus check, NO DATED POSTMARK!
In the 60's & 70's, almost everyone at USPS was a WWII Veteran, by the late 80's they were all gone and the Vietnam Vets were delivering the mail pretty well. Will this crop of veterans be able to keep up with their grandfathers?

When a Priority Mail letter I sent from PA to MA took 13 days to get there (via Kansas City and Aurora IL according to the tracking), I went and ranted to my local Postmaster. This is the explanation I got; whether it's true or just an excuse . . .
Whenever ANYONE working at a mail facility tests positive, they shut the whole place down, spend X number of days disinfecting the whole place, then everyone gets retested before they start back up. They go through this over and over . . . meanwhile, trailers full of mail are either parked in a lot, or sent on a cross-country odyssey looking for an open sorting facility. Some places have 30 or more 53 foot trailers waiting.
I got a slightly different take from a letter carrier. If you notice, FEDEX and UPS are using USPS for final delivery on a lot of parcels, especially in rural areas. Post Office gets paid for delivery. YOUR packages have already been paid for, whether they get delivered on time or not, so the priority is to get the new money. *** ever happened to ". . .neither rain nor snow nor dark of night . . .?"

Holy smokes, a forum member sent me a check Saturday, thousands of miles away via Express mail, and it was delivered yesterday, a holiday.
Imagine that?

A large problem was that the private shippers, like UPS and FedEx, were able to deny any more packages before Christmas because they were overloaded. The USPS can't refuse, and a lot of us had to wait 1 1/2 months to get our deliveries. The upper echelon of USPS didn't properly plan for the problem they knew was coming. The virus already had all these carriers backed up as it was because everyone was shopping online; then came Gift-Giving Season.

I think they've just been affected like everybody else. Throw the election fiasco on top of normal holiday traffic and sprinkle with absenteeism due to COVID and generous sick pay benefits.
To wit: the FFCRA granted....
Two new leave types are now extended to postal employees.
Up to 80 hours of Emergency Paid Sick Leave for specific qualifying reasons.
Public Health Emergency Leave, which amends the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), allowing employees to take up to 12 weeks of leave related to the closure of a minor child’s school or place of care due to COVID-19.
There's a provision that grants partial pay for 10 of the 12 week FLMA.
Families First Coronavirus Recovery Act | American Postal Workers Union
I've seen this with other government entities. COVID hit and they granted extended paid leave. When Texas closed down their State Parks it had more to do with allowing very similar benefits and having a lack of staff to operate the parks than it did from wanting to prevent the spread of the virus.

The truth is that the USPS requires a higher level of edumacation than most other industries. A Fortune 500 company might accept a GED for a factory worker, but getting a CS classification is a different story.
People I know in the USPS are college graduates, that just chose the wrong thing to major in.

True. My neighbor is plant manager for a large maker of electronic auto parts.
At the start of FFCRA his workers were taking off claiming they had the virus, no note needed. He couldn’t run the plant because he never knew who would show up.
Eventually the word got out to other workers, they talked amongst themselves. They were paid to sit home for weeks and weeks.
His daughter is FB friends with one of his managers and the employee was posting pics of he and his wife on the beach in FL, yucking it up no less.
All this came to an end when they initiated instant Covid testing before entering the plant. Don’t show up, don’t get paid.

Yeah they're still catching up.
I got my Mom's prescription insurance bill today. Dated 12/15/20, due 01/01/21.
I just wrote on it that she died 12/14/20, and I just got this bill 01/19/21.
So it's still an ongoing thing.

I sent in for the renewal of my FFL in late October. The charge was posted in early November. Still haven't seen the new license.
My old one expires 1 Feb 2021.

I believe USPS requires a high school diploma/equivalent for hiring. Like many employers, meeting the minimum requirements does not necessarily mean you will be hired as most want more than the minimum.
I will say that being a college graduate does not mean that person is smarter or will be a better employee than those that hired meeting the minimum requirements.

As before, the USPS is hiring if you want to work in an environment not knowing what package or letter may contain the virus, have at it.
Sitting home on the couch does not make product move any faster. Get a grip.
Here from someone who knows.

No, it doesn't show you are smarter. But it DOES show that you at least have some initiative and are willing to put in your dues to get ahead.
Show me a BS / MBA and I'll show them to the door. Give me someone with a GED or an AAS, with a BS earned a few years later and I'll hire them on the spot. The best people I ever hired were ones that worked hard and got mid-level grades. The worst one ever graduated #2 in his Masters class, but turned out (as they say) not to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time.

My son was a Facility Manager in a plant with 600 employees. At least 300 work every day. Just prior to us realizing what was going on he had a couple hundred out sick. For real. In fact he got sick too. It was before testing was being done and after it went thru the entire plant it basically petered out. We just figured it WAS covid.

I worked in Avionics in the Corps. Just to get in the door you had to have a GCT 0f 120 minimum. Lots of the guys were smarter than that, but they also had common sense. However, we did have some with no common sense and we kept an eye on them. Accidents seemed to follow them around.

This is a sad state of affairs for the USPS. I can remember when I would mail a letter home and get the answer back in 8 days and that was from Viet Nam.

Here is a third instance of their ineptness.
3.) Mailed a package to Dubai on the 11th. It just got to N.Y. on the 19th and that was Priority/Registered Mail.
At the same time I mailed a package to a friend in Stafford, Va. The Estimated Delivery Date was 1/15 and it got there 1/16. So I guess I should be happy with that one.

I mailed a priority envelope at the post office on Friday 1/15. Here it is 1/20 and it’s not in the tracking system yet.
