Default We Still Have It Good

Even during these times with scare firearms, limited ammo availability, a potential changes to laws, I still think we have it better than the majority of the world where guns and ammo are a thing. One of my favorite YouTube channels is Shooting Stuff Australia. It's interesting to see how firearms enthusiasts the world over do things, their limitations, laws, etc. Their last show mentioned how the only reason they can even get semi-auto pistols featuring 10-round magazines is because of states like California and Massachusetts that demand them. They also said that all pistols have to have safeties with a red dot on the safety and ones that don't have it are banned from being sold. Ruger was asked to put red dots on their safeties and they declined because they wouldn't change their manufacturing process for just a small market.

Another great Aussie YouTuber is Mark and Sam After Work. The guy and his wife are into ultra long range shooting the likes of which I have never seen. Truly impressive stuff. Mark knows his stuff and builds quite a bit of his own gear, as he's a custom auto mechanic.

I agree. We've made great strides in the last 30 or so years with CCW laws, National Forest carry, etc. We need to keep what we have at the very least and get Constitutional carry in all 50 states and US territories. I'm very surprised Texas has not gone CC yet. It's disappointing to say the least.

Default Not just firearms

You Sir, are indeed correct. We need to understand how good the USA is, both in world history and in the protection afforded to the individual citizens God given rights. Both of which have been and are under constant assault, it must stop.

I’ll add that when I take stock in the situation around me, I don’t use Australia, England, Japan, NYC, Chicago or NJ as my benchmark.

The Texas legislature just started its biennial session and a bill has been filed to establish Constitutional carry. I'm too old and experienced to make predictions anymore, but I am optimistic.

We have kept what we have by being diligent and having organizations such as the National Rifle Association.

Agreed. I became an Endowment Member because I believe in the work the NRA did and continues to do for our 2nd Amendment rights.

We can "lose it all" by being complacent and allowing ourselves to believe everything is OK because it is "somewhat better" than other parts of the world.

I'm with pharmer (as he stated above) don't give an inch.

The alternative is we risk losing our rights just like the Aussies, Brits, Canadians, and Kiwis.

Don

I fear tho we may have it "good" now and compared, it is slow being chipped away... Any gun law is an infringement... ANY!

We are so much more free here, in many ways, than citizens in most other countries, and we don't seem to appreciate that. Even other Western nations, our allies, restrict their citizens' rights in ways we would never tolerate.

Not too long along, a British citizen engaged me on a social media site over our 2nd Amendment. I told him that nobody who lives in a country with a monarchy...an official national religion...legal press censorship...and surveillance cameras everywhere...ought to be telling Americans how they should live.

For the last ten months or so, millions of Americans have bought their first-ever firearms. Many of them were folks who were either ambivalent about, or openly hostile toward, the 2nd Amendment...until they saw their cities being burned while police stood by helplessly. I think those new gun owners can't help but be good for the future of the 2nd Amendment.

Yes, we have to be vigilant, always, but I don't think we're in near as much danger as some folks would have us believe.

We are, more than ever. First "mass shooting event" and the media hysteria call to "Do something!" will be trouble as the enemy holds ALL the higher ground. Didn't Australia go full confiscation over a single event? Joe

I am in favor of Constitutional Carry, but ONLY if pass a gun safety handling course before a permit is given. I have seen way way too many people who "Think" they know how to shoot and protect their loved ones, but put everyone at risk because of no actual knowledge of handling a firearm. Having been an instructor and competitor for 40 some years I have seen handling that scared me to death.

Maybe then they can pass an automobile safety handling course before a license is given......and driver ed. does not count, nor does the license test, written or road......the moment you say I support somethings......but, but, but......then you really aren’t supporting it. In the case of Constitutional carry, in the paraphrased words of MLK, you are either for it or against it.....

This is all just opinion, and you could certainly be right, but respectfully...

As a practical matter, our adversaries know they can't succeed, and we should understand that as well. We must be vigilant, and watchful, and pro-active...but I don't see the sky falling.

The Heller decision...the current makeup of the Supreme Court...the fact that "the enemy" has a razor-thin majority in Congress (and not all of "the enemy" are our enemies)...and the overwhelming number of firearms in the hands of private citizens here...all mitigate against any Australian-style mass gun "buyback" program or ban of scary-looking rifles.

I'm not saying it couldn't happen...just that I don't think it's as likely as some 2A supporters think.

I'm not going to act like a 2A Neville Chamberlain about things, the enemy is demanding territory. Right now is the time for a show of strength. As history shows there is a point of no return and we are closer to that than we ever have been. Our enemies have built up an air of confidence, remain vigilant!
