Local Gun Show = Disppointment
Went to one of the smaller local gun shows this morning here in central Ohio.
Attendance was heavy.
Fewer tables than normal for this show.
All guns were WAAAAYYYYY overpriced, especially used S&W’s. Many were heavily used or bubba’d. One table had a 49 and a 649; both in good shape but priced in the mid-$600’s.
Lots of Glocks, Taurus, a few Springfield Armory and the usual “oddballs” (“STAR”), but not a Sig to be found. I overheard several people looking for P365’s. A few trades were going on but these were mostly long guns.
I saw only a few boxes of .38 Special and .45ACP, asking prices were $35-48 per box....I passed...
There was a table with re-loading supplies but didn’t stop to look at prices...I don’t reload...
All in all, a disappointing morning but made me appreciate my modest collection even more.

MM- I’m not up on gun prices (and I’ve been corrected many times by the experts here) but I would not sell my 649 for $650

In the 90's I did "PRO" gun shows at the Franklin county fair grounds until they were shut down because of embezzlement. The half dozen I've been to since then, were in the category of "T-shirts, jerky and trash for gold priced guns"
Other areas of the country have nice shows, but OGCA seems to be the only good show left in Central Ohio!

I haven’t been to a gun show in several years.
I’m thinking they are about to be a thing of the past.

Here in the Tulsa area there is a small gun show just about every month, and the Wanenmacher show (world's largest when not shut down by COVID) twice a year. Some years I have gone to every show available but scored only at the huge Wanenmacher shows.
Then again I found great deals at the small show this past December, and again today. Point is, if I hadn't gone I would never have known. Ya pays yer money and ya takes your chances.

In northern Ohio are shows are back to every other month. Yes prices are crazy on guns and ammo, bought a nice Beeman air pistol last weekend. I enjoy at least walking around and you never know what might fall into your lap.

How far back in time must one travel, to be able to say, “Wow, these gun shows are awesome!”?

My first OGCA show was in 1979 it would absolutely fry Pelosi's brain! The entire history of firearms under one roof and for sale! From, Wheel locks to M-2 50's, guys selling water jackets for WWI Maxium belt fed MG's, to factory engraved first year Colt SAA's!
Living in the past will only make you drool!

I could be mistaken, but wasn't there an ATF prohibition years ago that FFL holders couldn't legally do gun shows and were restricted to selling from their FFL address only? Anyone remember such a restriction?

This time of year we have about one gun show a month. Usually they have approximately 250 dealers or so, only about 20 or so are selling non-gun related items (beef jerky, clean your glasses, jewelry etc). Prices are on the high side. Deals can be found if you look in the right places.

I’m not an FFL holder, but I don’t recall that law.

I know one FFL holder that sold guns at gun shows. They had a stack of background checks to run the Monday after.

Our shows here have lots of FFL holders selling guns. They do their background check right then and there. All via computer.

I’m sure glad gun show prices are consistently going up. We’d be in real trouble if those prices were falling. When I feel like it’s too high I walk away. When I feel like it’s good deal I buy . I know this is a novel idea but it works for me.

As posted in post #7, NE Ohio shows are plentiful. Some large, some small, some medium. The previous weekend I did the medium Berea show, this weekend I did the large Akron show, next weekend is a small Mentor show. Seems there's always a show occurring. Us Ohio folks are lucky.

I sure don't, have had an FFL for 30 years. The paper work is just a little different. Most of the sellers at gun shows I've been to are FFL dealers.

It only takes one good deal to make a gun show. I've been to some in SW MO that were crappers and and some that were really good. Some are small shows and Springfield has a pretty good sized one that's usually OK but not always. I like going to to look and if a deal falls in my lap I buy if I have the funds. Either way they are fun. I've never seen a show that was all jerky and jelly as I've seen described here. Hope I never do.

For me, 25 - 35 years. There is only one decent 'old time' show within driving distance for me and I hope COVID doesn't kill it.

The last decent sized gun show I went to in your general area was at the Monroeville Mall.

I went to the Monroeville show about three years ago, it was a great show for me. But coming from the Cleveland Ohio area, it was a 3 hour drive. Traffic in the area was heavy and parking was terrible because of the long walk from the parking spot to the show entrance. I wish the traffic and parking were different as I'd like to go to it again.
I've heard good things about the Washington PA show but never been to it.

If you come in on the turnpike and go west on Rt.22 it should not have been bad to get to the mall. last time I was there, we parked next to the building where the gun show was housed.
I too, have heard the gun show in Washington, Pa. was good. Just off U.S.79.

Where are you at? We have several good shows in this area Vero Beach/Melbourne area. The Lakeland show is usually very good. Sometimes we find deals and sometimes we do not. It is luck of the draw. The last couple of gun shows here in Sebastian, I found several somethings to buy. Also stuff was purchased at the Melbourne show.

At least you have a gunshot to go to. In CO, there hasn't been one in a year. My finding when I did go was lots of plastic guns, few S&W revolvers.

You did not miss anything. I had not been to a show in over a year and a friend convinced me to go Saturday. mostly dealers, not much of the old private stock, looking for an over/under for my son and found only one total in the show, being a 28 gage from Turkey. Almost no old 22 rimfires, I though that odd. Very few S&W, just a few scatted with the other guns, no one there with a "collection". Ammo prices out the top, no reloading supplies. Odd type show from the ones "before covid". We left early, you could not walk for the number of people in attendance. I wish I had stayed home.

An FFL I knew, who had a table at a few Virginia gun shows, sold most of my revolvers, rifles and ammo for me a couple of years ago, it took him a couple of months and I guess he did all the paperwork. Given todays shortages of everything and the prices they are getting now I probably should have kept my small collection, guess a little sellers remorse, but it is a PITA to sell everything individually.

The ones in NEPA were always lousy IMHO.
I stopped going to them years ago.
I went to one at the NY State Fairgrounds in Syracuse in 1997. I saw stuff I never saw before or since. Plus they served beer. I remember telling my buddy all they need to add are strippers and it's a Trifecta.

I went to the Spec Ops show in Hilliard....I like the way Spec Ops runs these shows which tend to be smaller but I can usually find a hidden gem or two.
A friend went to the Westland Mall show and reported similar results. He's looking at AR-types and found prices ~30-50% higher than a year ago and $40-50/box handgun ammo. He called it a waste of his time.

Everything is a lot higher than a year ago. The question is how much higher will it go?

I went to the Westland Mall show about 5 years ago, first AND last time. I went to a show at the State of Ohio fairgrounds about 10 years ago, ended up being a small show and for that one never went back again. The Mansfield show is a good one, I try to get to that one at least once a year. The Lima show is a good one but has been out of operation due to Covid.

I Used to attend the OGCA in the early to mid 90's when I lived in the area (Brookpark) I live close to Monroeville so I attend that one and PGCA in Butler (Pre Covid) the Washington show is also a nice one and you can visit the Trolley Museaum when your there. Miss the shows but not the smells if you know what I mean

I would have to go out of state to get to a decent show at the moment. Our state is pretty locked down, and Arizona has a COVID rate close to off the scale, so it's online auctions or nothing right now.
