That's , ancient, excellent, seldom used advice. It was offered by my favorite, Author, humorist, and Philosopher. 'Mark Twain', (Samuel Clemens), passed on more, easy to understand information, and helped me to understand the problems of everyday life, to me, a homespun scholar, than any other of my mentors.

Maybe, but in the group of youngsters I know, the ones with a motivation towards education have probably covered at least 2 years of work instead of one -- and the rest, well, they're just as dumb as they would have been after a year of sitting in class. "Dumbing down" has been the major policy of our educational system in this country for at least 50 years.

I loved Mark Twain, and his observations on human behaviour show how little we've truly progressed since his time. I'd like to share a few of my favourites, both from Twain and other sources; "If anyone approaches you with the express intention of doing good, run like hell."
Never say to someone, "how stupid can you be"? They seem to regard it as a challenge.

"I can do anything I want, ONE time". ME

" If you think i act like a bulldog with a bone, why are you poking me in the eye with a stick?" Got this from old Pa ridge runner, who was talking to yuppie pond scum co-worker.

Amen to that. My gf teaches biology at Univ. and tears her hair out at how unprepared many of her students are- can't write coherently, can't spell and can't do basic arithmetic, yet have aspirations to be a brain surgeon and so "have to have an A average." Gack!

So the universities end up having to dumb things down and/or offer make-up classes to "the precious pearls of the future" some of whom would be of more use to society - and more likely to make a good living - by becoming welders or plumbers etc.

And, as you observed, the ones with genuine talent and motivation will make progress anyway.


Oh, and "three thumbs up" for Mark Twain. That his observations are just as relevant now as when he wrote them reminds us that human nature hasn't changed much, no matter how much "progress" we have made otherwise.

Ya, but mostly because they got it for older people. I see plenty of stupid over 50 and that takes real stupid when experience should have kicked in to some degree.
