I very rarely go to the movies The Perfect Storm was the last one I went to. As I drove by a theater today for some reason I wondered, are commercial movies still projected from film or are they done digitally or some other means?
Any one care to shed some light for me?
Thanks,
Steve

We have a brand new 250 seat commercial theater in the complex where I work. It's projector is digital and will take input from a variety of sources. Most of the time we use DVD's which come straight from the 'film' distributors, but other times we use films stored on a computer or sometimes cable input for things like the Superbowl and the inauguration though arrangements with Comcast.
New stuff is very versatile.

I was conducting a food/health inspection at a theater the other day and discovered tht they are still using film for their movies, not DVD's or any other type of electronic media. man, those are one big *** rools of film.

There's a switch underway to digital, but it's got a ways to go. There's DLP, Digital Light processing, with millions of micromirrors on a chip, and now the old fashioned LCDs are making a comeback as well.
But there are still lots of theaters with big rolls of film. And projectionists to handle them, which labor cost mostly gets eliminated with the digital stuff.
But the picture is better too. And delivery is easier.
