Default Man Purse...Who Uses One?

OK, confession time, who routinely uses a murse or a man purse...whatever name you would like to apply? As I get older, I’m beginning to see the usefulness of such an accessory. I don’t want the weight of a backpack, don’t like the looks of a fanny pack and more and more don’t want to load my pockets down with stuff (nope, don’t wear cargo pants). So those “don’t” things make a bag of some sort more attractive as a way to keep up with stuff. It is not an item my generation, I’m 74, grew up with and for some of us it might be a bit uncomfortable to carry a “purse”.

Now that I have almost convinced myself a man purse might be a viable option, the question becomes which one? So all you guys who are more secure about the use of a bag, chime in...tell me all about it and drive me over the edge toward a purchase. Oh, and a few hints about the best murse and why it is so good.

Stay safe and be blessed.

Some standard "Messenger Bags" have options for carrying holstered handguns is special compartments. When I travel I carry a Messenger Bag to accommodate the camera, Ipad, and sometimes a handgun. Candy bars, water bottle, etc.

No "man purse" for me, but I am into photography, and occasionally carry extra stuff in my camera bag.

We went to Vegas with my BIL and his GF, and he carried one. I wish I'd taken his photo! He looked just like Allen in the movie, "The Hangover"!

Keys, wallet, comb, folding knife and snotrag. All fit in my regular pockets, don't need anything else. Stopped carrying change, just use a credit card.

Remember Seinfeld's Manssiere? I often wondered if that went into production.

Nope - not ever going to carry a purse, wear earrings, makeup, or perfume. I'll just leave that transition to those that might have identity problems. I'm old and set.

They'd have to at least call it something other than a purse
before I'd even look at one.

I’ve been known to sling a canvas military map case over my shoulder at gun shows. It allows me to stash grips, holsters, knives and other small treasures that I find, without interrupting the hunt and returning to my display table or vehicle.

My day to day necessities fit nicely in my pants or jacket pockets.

Somehow the name "tactical bag" sounds better. Check these out:

I have one of these gig bags that I got 30 years ago. If I have to go somewhere and need to haul extra stuff it comes in mighty handy. It is basically a camera bag.

How about a drawstring backpack? These are often giveaways; my son used to get them at swim meets. But you can buy them, too. Cheap.

Simple bag with drawstrings to close opening and attach to bottom corners of bag, so that the drawn strings, when bag is closed, can be slipped over your shoulders and the bag carried like a backpack.

You can fold up and put in a pocket when not in use. Strings the size of paracord are best; thicker, while comfortable if carrying something heavy, like two quarts of whiskey, won't fold up small enough to fit into your pocket easily.

Good for a rain jacket, lunch, iPad, or what have you.

Extremely manly. Everyone who sees you with it will think you are a stud athlete.

Pretty much everything I need day-to-day I can carry on my person in pockets, holsters, pouches, etc. Of course, if I ever have to escape trouble by swimming across a body of water, I'll probably just sink and drown.

Not really a "murse" or messenger bag, but I do have a laptop case that I've used when my usual backpack isn't "professional" enough. It has a lot of extra pockets for things beyond the laptop and its accessories that might be too heavy to put in my suit pockets. I've kept a flashlight and trauma kit in mine before. Don't use it that much, though.

I have thought about getting a messenger bag. Maybe one with a concealed pistol holster, but I'm not a big fan of off-body carry. Might be good to have the option if needed.

Several years ago I knew a paramedic who used an Israeli military surplus medic bag as a general carry-all. IIRC, it was olive green with a red caduceus symbol on it.

Could be a regional thing. I see them from time to time, though it's usually in the downtown area and still not as common as backpacks.

Nope, never ever gonna happen.
Don’t get me wrong, if you ere good with a man bag or whatever, go right ahead.
In my world it is a good way to lose a bunch of stuff in one place.

Also, they creep me out just a little bit.

As much as I hate to admit it, I have been guilty recently.

Since I now need a cane to maintain balance, I need to keep a hand free for important chores like unlocking doors or bringing a handgun into play. So, I picked up a decent looking leather bag with a long shoulder strap that allows me to sling it over my shoulder and chest..

In it I can carry a tablet, a New Testament, charging cables, notepad, pens, small water bottle, etc. The essentials that might be needed if you need to wait in a doctor's office, the MVD, or other places where you have to wait with time on your hands.

Like the old saying goes, "To each his own"...or, "Different strokes for different folks"...and more power to you. That being said, about the closest thing I'll ever use that even comes close to being a man purse is a pair of saddle bags that I drape over the back end of my mule.

I have one, but I only use it when I go someplace like a medical appointment where I disarm and disrobe. I found dealing with hiding a holster, gun, mag and mag carrier inconvenient in these situations. My Murse solves these problems.

In the back pocket I keep my iPad to read when waiting—which justifies the presence of the bag—and my FS M&P 9mm and backup 21-round extended mag in the front pocket. I normally carry the bag in my left hand by the handle. I “load it” in the car just before going in for the appointment, and I RE-arm with my normal carry equipment when I return to the car.

I would not use it or anything else that is off-body carry for every day totin’.

You might make history with a man purse. You could be the first man to ever have his purse snatched by a woman Imagine explaining that to the police

Slingpack. Kind of a one-strap mini backpack.
Looks nothing like a purse, but serves the same function.

Being somewhat of a packrat in the past, I used to save the messenger bags that I got as freebies when I went to association meetings. Recently I had a lot of times where I had to deliver or mail documents in the big city. I felt a lot better carrying my documents in a way that left both hands free.

Still looking for one that won't clash with my Charlton Heston tattoo .

Sure wish I could joke about this one but I cant. I envy those of you that can.
9 years ago I became paralyzed from the neck down. Took 6months to get my legs going just enough to walk. It took almost 2 years to get my arms going at less than full range of motion. Had come up with a lot of ways to adapt and overcome. Never got my hands fully going. I do manage to do most of what I need to do.
I do not have the ability to pocket or unpocket anything. I came up with the idea of hanging a fanny pack type pouch around my neck to keep everything in front of me. Wallet, keys and normal carry items.
Never thought of it as a purse.
Anyway, I hope all of you that said you never would, never have to.
Jim

Everyone at SHOT carries a bag, most refer to them as Trick or Treat bags. In the past we went booth to booth and filled them with SWAG. These days we just get QR links and maybe a Life Saver....sorry, just had to. I pictured 20,000 folks wandering around with plastic bags....but
I occasionally use various containers for stuff that will not fit in my pocket. Several are leather, some are left over trade show bags, Flight Safety book bags still come in handy. If the question is would I separate myself from my identification, vehicle ignition device, money, gun or knife by using a bag, then the answer is unequivocally no. I’m retired military, where I go, my ID goes ON my person. If you put a gun in a container, you better be married to it, there might be a fire drill....or other event.
I did note jimbo’s post and obviously those with disabilities face individual challenges. I support any method necessary for these folks to tote their stuff.

Jim, I can't possibly imagine what you have gone through or have tried to overcome. I know that there are some other members here that have lost use or have limited use of limbs and, like you, always seem to bring an uplifting air of positivity to this forum.

It is a shame that some here feel insecure and threatened by a male carrying a shoulder bag.

I wish all the best for you, sir.

PM me anytime you like as I also have mobility issues.

I also prefer a sling pack to a messenger bag. It doesn’t look quite so, hmmm.... european.

When I used to commercial fish I mainly wore sweat pants aboard and as I functioned as the engineer, had a fanny pack with, small vise grips, Gerber multi tool and a small crescent wrench. You could fix a lot of small stuff with that. Pocket knife was in a pocket. always wore jeans when I went ashore.
Noways when I work I usually function as supervision or inspections. I keep my stuff in a clip board and I devised a lanyard for it for when I need to climb latter ways etc.

I keep one close. Don't always carry it unless I'm certain I'll need something that's in it. Otherwise, I just leave it in the Jeep . . .

I use one when I travel. It's a small single strap backpack. I sometimes wear it on the front for access to the pockets. I can strap it on my roller bag.

It's something like this:

I like the "belly bag" to carry important stuff such as handgun and spare magazine, wallet, keys, eic. The one I have has separate compartments so the loose keys or wallet doesn't inhibit access to the handgun.

This Saddleback flight bag looks pretty nice. I wouldn’t be ashamed to use it if someone bought me one. They’re only $600.

I'm somewhat of a packrat, when I go fishing or hunting I carry everything I might need and some things I don't. I have an old LL Bean backpack that I would carry cord, matches, extra coat or rain coat hunting. Same way with fishing, I carry more than the law allows.

When I worked I had a briefcase, still have it but it's full of memories now. If I have to go with the MBH to a Dr. appointment I sometimes carry and old, almost worn out, Auburn bag with things I think I might need that day.

Someone said their wife carried a purse with his "stuff" in it. I will not burden my wife with anything of mine heavier that a piece of paper. If I can't carry it, I don't need it. I sometimes carry things for her, gladly so, and I will continue to do so as long as I am physically able. I also open the car door for her, but that is another story......

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Wow, you could carry your nice leather rigs to a BBQ in that. :-)

Was at a social event yesterday, someone had bought my Niece's husband a really nice leather phone pouch that fastened on his belt. If he didn't have a BBQ rig, that phone pouch would fit right in. But, I suspect he had a nice rig or two.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Years ago, I had long hair but never wore a pony tail. Lots had longer hair back then. I never had a piercing anywhere on my body. I see a lot of younger guys now days with man buns and "carry-alls" in this trendy era in Pittsburgh & elsewhere, but at my near 64 years of age, I'll just maintain my status quo. I understand anyone with some disability needing some help; that's different.
If I were younger, in my 20s again, I don't know what group of males I would fit in with, as far as style, etc.
A lot of rock bands made a lot of money in the Glam Rock genre. While they were stealing your women.
Live & let live...
