30 years ago today I was in a USMC Humvee crossing the border from Saudi Arabia into Kuwait. We had to pass through 2 fairly large minefields before being clear. The most dangerous time was waiting in line between the 2 minefields. We were like sitting ducks if the Iraqi artillery had any sense of what was happening. We were in full NBC protective mode (nuclear, biological, chemical). Pretty scary time and the only time I ever feared for my life. It was a cakewalk after the initial assault. We were sitting just outside Kuwait City ready to go when the President called the ceasefire and the 100 hour war officially ended. Wow - seems like a long long time ago. Semper Fi.

My brother was with the 3rd ID out of Germany. He never says one word about it.

Wow, 30 years. Time does fly when you're having fun. I was stationed in Little Rock (AGR) when that went down. My son, LtC. Tom was 10. I could not imagine that 12 years later he would be suited up with the 75th FS. Welcome home.

I was in 11th grade 30 years ago. I was watching “Pork Chop Hill” when they announced the ground offensive had started. No one thought it would take only 100 hours to retake Kuwait.

My friends and I followed the build up of Desert Shield and combat of Desert Storm closely. My buddy had a older brother who was a officer in the 3rd Armored, which made it a little more real to us.

Coworker got called up. He said they came across some Iraqi troops dug in, in buried buses. He said they gave them a chance to surrender. They did not and it was ugly.

I was driving in sleet and snow somewhere between Detroit and Toronto

We were running air rescue operations for air assets across the area. I was 19 years old. Feeling old now.

I was at a flat spot in the sand called “Lonesome Dove” with the 3rd MAW (Marine Air Wing). I was running Aircraft Maintenance and ABDR units for Navy/Marine and Allied Coalition aircraft. After the initial assault, I flew into Kuwait City International Airport to set up a maintenance and repair unit. There was so much celebrating going on with Firearms being discharged into the air, that it was dangerous to fly low over the city. We took some hits, though none were serious.

One of my best friends from school was sent and he found an AK-47 manual in Arabic in the desert and sent it to me! I showed it around for weeks.

The A-10's had a field day on the "Highway of Death".

I remember watching a lot of it on TV and cheering with my wife!

I do miss Colin Powell, Stormin' Normin" and Rummy. They were tough as nails and highly entertaining.

I had Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner in desert. I got there before the air or ground war began. Flew a little, griped a lot! Saddam and his shannagains cost me a 2 year unaccompanied tour to Germany....My dream assignment. I had a RFO for Germany when he invaded Kuwait. Never made it.

When I got home I got new orders to Korea. Turned out ok in the end. I really enjoyed my time in the 3rd MI (AE) there. But when Saddam was captured in 2003 I yelled at the TV, "There You Go You *@$&#%*! Servers you right for screwing me out of Germany!", LOL.

It does seem like a lifetime ago.

I remember the footage of him being dragged out of that hole, and the hanging. YEA! The report to the public was no WMD's found. It's a little hard to explain all those M-8's going off all over the place as the bunkers were being destroyed. Blame the rash of miscarriages after the war and strange illness on burning oil fields. Reminded me of what was said about agent orange for years. I'm not complaining, just say'n.

Saddam got what he had coming to him. The utter insanity of him ordering Kuwait's oil fields be lit afire as his troops retreated. They lit a reported 605 to 732 oil wells, plus a number of oil filled low-lying areas, such as oil lakes and fire trenches. The first fires were lit in Jan / Feb '91, the first fire wasn't extinguished until early April 1991, with the last well capped on November 6, 1991. Sore loser, madman tyrant style.
