Default ATV

My wife & I wish to purchase a side by side. I don't want to spend a fortune but do have two concerns, the noise & heat level in the cab. The less the better. Any help with this is appreciated. Thanks guys..............Lynn

Honda Pioneer of the the size you want. We have one that is a work vehicle that is used and abused daily—literally ridden an hour or more daily. And it has been indestructible. I will never buy anything but a Honda. The one drawback is I think they are one of the more expense side by sides, but you get what you pay for.

Lynn—what do you and your wife want to do with it? Trail Ride? Working vehicle? Will you be able to ride from where you have it garaged or will you need to move it about to where you want to ride? Do you like sedate, riding or do you want to cut her lose on occasion?

We will use it round the place mostly but will ride some. Never owned one but probably 40 mph would be a bunch for us.

I would look at the 500. They have 500, 700, 1000. Eliminate the 1000–that is for heavy towing and high speeds.

The 500 will fit in the back of a pick-up for hauling. Sounds like you all may want an enclosed cab—your dealer will have all of that. You want a heat shield installed too—will help tremendously with both heat and sound.

I would visit a dealer and look and drive the 500 and 700 and decide what you want. 700 is a bit roomier, but harder to move.

By the way, the Mules are also nice as are the Kubota’s and John Deere’s. But those are both heavy use farm and commercial units. They have diesel models too. We know folks with all three and they are all great SxS.

I would look at Honda’s and the Mule (Kawasaki). I would avoid anything else. The other brands have constant trouble.

We've had this Yamaha Rhino 700 FI now for almost ten years and have never had any problems with it whatsoever. It's equipped with a winch and I attach a snowplow on the front end during the winter. Like I said, no problems after ten years.

We bought our first rhino 660 when they first came out (serial # 198) We bought a used Rhino 700 EFI 9 years ago and it starts in cold weather immediately compared to the previous one. My cousin has a Honda and the main advantage, (other than being a Honda) is the gearbox as opposed to the CVT used in nearly all other side x sides. We only have 5 acres and the Kubota Diesel has been on my wish list for the simple fact that I would not have to fill the rhino up with gas by gerry cans anymore. I already have a 50 gallon diesel tank with electric pump to fill my tractor. I am 70 and have had back surgery and just can't lift what I once could.

I have a Polaris Range and like it. It will go up some trails that are scary. Doors off in the summer, heater for in the winder. After looking at the cost of doors and rear window. I bought t some aluminum and plexiglass, fired up my welder and made my own. Your comfortable in it below zero. I made a heat shield around the fuel tank as putt putting when it was warm would cause vapor lock. I also wrapped the exhaust system with fiberglass tape, to cut down the noise and heat. i also added windshield sprayers and wipers. You can drive them on the streets here and mine is my regular around town cruiser

Chip—I always couple the Rhino and Mule in my mind. One of my neighbors has had a Rhino for years and it has been bullet proof.

I am waiting on delivery of a Mule. Ranch model. Of course I had it lifted with larger tires and a steel roof with a windshield that lifts straight out. That is important.
While at the dealer they were prepping a new, believe it was a Can-Am, with a cab and A/C.
That could solve the heat problem.
But could blow the budget.

The people I know with Cam-Am and Polaris keep them in the shop constantly. But that may be a function of those are the brands popular with young folks racing them about. I think the Polaris Razor is the high-speed king.

I don’t think the young folk want to putt about on a diesel Kubota or John Deere or a big Honda pulling a fencing trailer with a bed loaded with feed.

My son and his friends have unloaded our Honda, cleaned it up and “blown the soot out of it” (just to help out according to them). So far they have not torn anything up. I have frankly been astounded by how well that thing has held up.

But for $8-10K for a 500, $10-15K for a 750 and $15k plus for a 1000, they should be durable!

I have a mule 4010 with a lift. bought it new in 2012. Not real fast 25mph but has been great on my place and I treat it really badly, and it has been used daily since purchased

Buy two off-road bikes. If you want to ride side by side, you can. If not, you don’t have to. The biggest advantage: those 4-wheelers can tip over and hurt you.

When you get one consider taking it out to the Hatfield and McCoy trails in Southern West Virginia. They have trails for all skill levels. And some of the most beautiful mountains The Good Lord ever made. But then I may be a bit biased.

That’s a $25k machine too. I thought Honda’s were high until I looked at John Deere side by sides. But they are top of the line.
