Anybody else have koi or fancy goldfish hobby
I had a koi pond for 25 years at our old place. When moved eleven years ago was too old to dig a pond again, so went back to goldfish.
My pond was 2500 gal. and six feet deep. The picture shows the koi during winter under the cover. The Kohaku (red & white one) was 34".
My current goldfish tank in my home office/gun room with Orandas and Lionheads. I sit and daydream a lot while watching them (ya, I'm retired 21 years now .

I do.
I used to be into marine reef tanks, but it's a daily chore and very expensive too. It get's really pricy when you put a piece of new live coral in just to have some fish that normally doesn't eat coral start to aggravate it and kill it just for fun! There goes $100+.
Gold fish are easy, forgiving and can be cheap.
I just have an outdoor fountain on my porch I maintain now and love it, one day I'll build me a Koi "Bogg filter" pond.
This is almost a year ago, these fish are about three times this size now, I also keep a heater in there for them too in the winter.

Does my favorite dairy farmer uncle count? He had some lunker goldfish in his barn yard horse tank.

We got a Koi pond and about 70 Koi when we moved a couple of years ago. It is two sided with tunnels for the Koi to swim back and forth. I think each side is about 2500 gallons. We LOVE them.

I use Goldfish for mosquito control in my cattle water tank. The tank froze solid a couple of weeks ago - that's SOLID, and it's just now melted to the point they will either be floating or hungry. I get mine at the bait shop for fifty cents each, but they're worth more than that during the mosquito season.

Used to have KOI in our back yard pond. Some were as big as submarines . The Blue Herons found our pond and eventually killed all the fish, even though my Wife tried desperately to keep them from getting the fish.

Bill—We have had crows and coons try to steal fish but they dive to the bottom or scoot through the tunnels to the other side. Our pond is 4 feet deep and I understand the deeper the pond the less predation.
CCI Quiet 22 makes less noise than a pellet rifle fired from a Belgium Browning SA-22 , or so a friend tells me!

Our pond is only about 16 to 18" deep. It was supposed to be about 24", but the landscaper had to pour another layer of concrete onto the pond as the 1st layer was leaking. We wanted him to tear out the pond and start over, but he refused to do that.
I would never think of shooting the Blue Herons, not only because they are protected, but also because they are only doing what Herons do when it comes to getting a meal.

John, your koi pond resembles the one the parents of my honorary nephew have. I always get a charge about how when my shadow goes over the water they come swimming over instead of scooting.

Yep Bill that is the problem. It’s too shallow to avoid predation.
How deep should I make my pond? - Sacramento Koi

They are P.I.G.S.—or at least ours are—and looking for a meal. Even when the water temperature drops below 41 and we stop feeing for the winter, they are still amazingly active. They have excellent vision and I have watched them when raccoons or crows come to the edge, and they immediately dive and scoot to the other side. So they are distinguishing shadows and/or seeing above the surface.

If you are great blue heron, coon or crow. But come to think of it that is probably close to the Cajun genetic make-up so yes!

I had a pond about 2’ deep and 8’ diameter in my back yard. Had a dozen koi up to 6” in it and had a game camera on it to catch the deer drinking from it. One day, no fish. They were all gone. Checked the game camera, and it had a pic of a blue heron in the pond.

We had two ponds with Koi in the upper, deeper pond and goldfish in the lower pond for about 20 years. The liners failed a few years ago,but it was fun while it lasted. The herons couldn’t get at the upper pond, but tried their best on the lower.I’m sure the neighbors laughed themselves silly at the geezer running out the back door chasing that heron around the back yard

Love ‘em although I had a bad experience once. 40 years ago I was building the Japan pavilion in Disney’s EPCOT. After creating a masterpiece, I signed off on the completed and filled waterworks, ready for the resident fish. Some beautifully colored specimens were released. Seemed happy. We came in next day and they were all belly up. Found out the solvent from the waterproofing de-oxygenated the water. Oops, learn something new every day. Joe
