Rust removal - - is this true or Internet baloney?
Quote:
Take some aluminum foil, dunk it in water and start rubbing on a rusty surface before long, the rust will simply wipe away. Because aluminum is soft compared to steel, the metal which will end up looking nice and shiny wont be scratched, either.

I pulled that off the Net. No copyright. Wondering what y'all think.

I have used a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle and aluminum foil to remove mild rust on various objects. It worked.

Well if it works you will need a lot of foil, as stated it is soft and also very thin.

Try it to see if it works on some rusty thing you really don't car about. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I've used bronze wool and oil, never aluminum foil, I'll have to try it.

My buddy once used that process on a rusty set of Cragars, worked well for him. They ended up looking pretty good.

Coca-Cola is supposed to work well. I believe Mythbusters confirmed this. I also found this video:

OLD Coke.....

Back in the 50's there was a Coca Cola bottling plant in my Grandmother's town of Denmark, SC. So there were always plenty of 6 1/2 oz. bottles of Coke around. Some of you know, but that stuff was POWERFUL, nothing like the weak tea they make now.
Mechanics used to wrap a rag around a rusted bolt and pour Coke on it. They'd come back after lunch and they could get the nut off. I doubt there are very many people around that remember that unless they are older than me.
I never tried it, but I don't doubt that 'real' Coke could dissolve a tooth overnight.

I believe Mythbusters did that, too. I think it worked. IIRC, they did a whole episode devoted to Coke myths.
FWIW, I think Mexican Coke is supposed to be closer to the original formula, but I'm not sure.

Mexican Coca-Cola is made with real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup, so that gets it closer to the original formula automatically.

HA! I didn't say I was fixing to do it, just wondering if it was true. Presently, I don't have any rusty guns (never mind what I had after the 2018 fire - they're mostly disposed of presently and they were all cleaned of rust but stained nonetheless so adios!)

I used it on the chrome on my bicycle, and it works - also use it for cooking and wrapping hats.

Which side do you use, the shiney or the dull? On my pointy hat I always put the reflective (shiney) side out.

Back in the 50’s when bumpers were real chrome that’s how we removed pitting on the bumpers.
Step back from the blued rusted firearm it won’t work

If ya try it, go easy on the white vinegar; the vinegar is one of the most effective and safe products I've used to remove bluing from a firearm ( granted the parts need to bathe in the vinegar for a few days).

It's just as expensive to go pick up some 000 steel wool at the local hardware store and use that. I would pass on the tin foil.

I've used this method myself, except any parts I was usually working on required more scrubbing than tinfoil would give me. On occasion I've had to do the first run with an SOS pad and repeat using Dawn dish soap and a soft Scotch-brite pad. I have used this process to refinish cast iron pans, among other things.
For those who want to try this, don't let anything soak more than 30 minutes at a time and use a liberal sprinkling of baking soda to neutralize the acid from the vinegar. If you don't do something to neutralize the vinegar you are going to eventually end up with other problems...

They use real sugar, and it tastes better just on account of that.
