It is sometimes good to be old
Have not been looking forward to going to license bureau. Every time I drive by there is a long line outside in the cold. So today I took my cane so I would have something to lean on while I waited. I don't need the cane all that much only walking on rough ground. Anyway I got in a line of about 12 people and when the lady at the door saw me she came and escorted me right inside. I was in and out in 5 minutes. I think that cane is going to see more use.

If you can play an angle to advantage, do it.

Gonna have to get me one of those.
I always kid my wife when we look for parking places; "If I limp when we get out of the car, can we park in a handicap space?"

One thing that local government gets right in NW Ohio are the license bureaus. I go to two of them, and it rarely takes more than 15 minutes no matter how busy it is. I sure can't say that about the ones in Las Vegas and in LA County, CA were back in the late 70's to early 80's. Maybe they finally got their act together. Ohio seemed to have it down from at least '72, when I started driving. Only delay I ever had in Ohio was when an old, very old guy came in with his wife, and the people bent over backwards to get them through the vision test. IMHO, and I said something about it, neither of them should have been driving at that point. It took him 10 minutes to get out of the parking lot.

Yes there are some advantages to getting old. Sometimes kids hold the door open and call ya sir. Sweet young ladies smile and talk to ya, believing you to be harmless. When overly distraught ruffians threaten ya, you can say "what, you're going to beat an old man". No need to sell books after you read them, the content is forgotten in a month. Senior discounts.
The main advantage is you can blame all your mistakes on being old.

My Okie Uncle knew how to use his cane, and not just for walking. He liked to play poker and one night he won pretty big. On his walk home, he was accosted by some ruffian in a mask who attempted to rob him of his winnings. My uncle beat the tar out of him with his cane and got the mask of said ruffian. Turned out the ruffian was one of the poker players bitter over losing.
As the saying goes, "never mess with an old man and a gun." To that, I'd add ". . . or a cane."

It's nice to hear that the lady at the desk wasn't just your normal "Next!" DMV worker. She deserves a great deal of credit because her job isn't a bed of roses either.

10 reasons why it's good to be old:
1. I used to worry about dying young. Not now. I got that one behind me.
2. I have a much better understanding of how the world works that I did when I was young.
3. I have a better feel for my strengths and weaknesses than I did when I was young.
4. I'm a lot more secure financially than I was when I was young and struggling to make a living and living from payday to payday.
5. I have a life time of wonderful memories that I can enjoy/relive anytime I want to.
6. Lifelong relationships with family and friends that I didn't have when I was young.
7. I now have a lot more patience/tolerance/forbearance/acceptance for all the little nuisances of life and the slow but relentless decline in my health and physical abilities.
8. I get more respect from young people than I did when I was one of them.
9. I have learned to respect and appreciate old people now that I am one of them. Never thought much about that when I was young.
10. I love having grandchildren. They add a dimension to being old that a young person can never know.

The age doesn’t bother me a bit. It’s the stuff that comes with it is the trouble.

I like being old because I can do things I couldn't do when I was younger. By being old I can do what I want too when I want too and I don't do things I don't want too do. When I was younger and having too work I had to be around some people I didn't like and now I only associate with people I enjoy. Larry

A tip I heard from a couple:
They took a trip to Disney World. They took a wheelchair with them and took turns riding in it while the other pushed. The staff also took pity on them and let them through the short line.

Many years ago my father told me he had the best advice I’d ever get, but he wouldn’t give it to me because he was certain I wouldn’t follow the advice.
I begged him to give me the advice: I promised I’d follow his advice.
Dad was reluctant, repeating that there was no chance I’d follow his advice.
I begged and begged, assuring him I’d follow his advice.
He relented, telling me that he knew I wouldn’t follow his advice even though it was the best advice I’d ever receive.
His advice? DON’T GET OLD!
He was right: best advice I ever got. I didn’t follow it!

I have a good friend who uses a walker. Every now and then I'll take her to run various errands for the both of us. When we go somewhere where she has to stand in line, she's often taken right to the front. They always let me go along with her.

I told my son in law about 40 years back " If I died tomorrow I would die happy". He told me not long ago he finally understood what the meaning was in my statement. He's retired now & suffering the same things old guys go thru. I'm almost 90. I've had a great life no matter what. Three wonder ful kids, grandkids & 6 so far greats. Out lived 3 wives & sort of heathy. Had many good hunts, what more can a man ask for?. I will die a happy man.

I think you're as "old" as you think you are. Sure the body complains, but you generally have control of how you think. My buddy Al has a few years on me but will never be old in that sense. He's afflicted with terminal adolescence.

My 2¢ worth.
After reviewing all the posts about, 'It's sometimes good to be old', My comment is,
"Bologna". Everyone has an opinion, and I admire, and envy, the folks that can cope with being old, with a positive attitude.
My opinion on this matter is, that I'm a heavy burden to my loved ones, and though they don't complain it hurts me deeply to be such a burden to them.
The worse part of the matter is, that I can't legally, or morally, do a thing about this matter.
After much thought on this matter, I can't think of one good thing to say about being Old!

I have a handicapped placard and sometimes use a cane but I have never, nor will I ever use a prop to elicit sympathy or an undue advantage.
Give my spot/place to someone who truly needs it.

I agree 100%! I had a pow Marx that was good for 6 months for 3 different knee replacement surgeries. I only used them for about 3 months each time.

I was a security guard in a casino and this old guy, who was 77, it turned out, was sleeping and the bosses kept telling me to wake him up. About the 5th time I woke him up, I told him, "It's time to leave! Goodbye!", and he sat there staring at me with his one eye. The other was sewn shut. I said, "Come on, let's go!", and tried to pull him off the chair he was in. WHAM! Cane to my temple, breaking the left bow of my glasses. WHAM! Breaks my new watch. The tip of the cane hit the center of my new digital watch, and it was junk. WHAM! Hits me on my arm, at that point, I grabbed the cane, and a female coworker runs up and starts dragging him out the door. He called us a bunch of names and the cops soon arrived, and they took him "somewhere". We were just glad he was gone.
Two weeks later, I'm about to go home, and about 5 minutes before I'm due to punch out, there he is, giving me the evil eye again. With his cane next to him. I just ignored him, and let the day shift and my boss deal with him. My boss ended up just calling the cops and letting them do the whole thing. I wish I had done it.

I'm not standing in any stinking line just to get a new DL with a star on
it. I read in the paper yesterday that it is not compulsory unless you
plan to travel. You would need it, or a passport, to get through the
airport. I'm through travelling, so I don't need it.

It was 2000 and I had gone with my Dad to the Kansas motor vehicle dept to renew his license on his car. After it was over, he had problems trying to get the plastic off the new sticker. I told him to let me do the sticker while he got into the drivers seat. After we had gone a block or so I told him that I thought he was in trouble because I had put the sticker on upside down. We went a little further and he did not say anything. Then we stopped and he said " You dummie, zero zero upside down is still zero zero." We both had a good laugh. He is gone now but I well allways remember my Dad and zero zero.
