Default Diets

Now that my wife and I are in our 70's plus, the doctors tell us that we need to make some "Adjustments" to our diets to try and loose some weight and get into "Better shape".

You KNOW the 1st thing on the list is SUGAR, that I like in my daily cup of coffee........

and NO pasta, flower or Booze.....................

I am not a vegetarian, but it looks like I am headed to a blender for the rst of my life.............

I might have to try out for the Olimpics, in order to burn off enough "Fat" and bad things to stay alive,

I'm actually on two diets.
I wasn't getting enough to eat on just one.

Good luck on your mission.
I've found cycling a good low-stress, low-impact fat burner, if you have a safe place to ride, like where Snubbyfan rides along a canal towpath.

Weight control is all about calories in versus calories out. Either reduce the former, or increase the latter. There is no need to cut out the meals that you enjoy, just modify the intake. As a retiree, I have reduced my meal periods to twice a day, breakfast followed by lunch at around 1400 hours. In the evening, if necessary, I will just have a light snack. Was 198 lbs a couple of years back, now 170 and 80 years young...

Stay away from bread, potatoes, and sugar. Eat all the meat, vegetables, and cheese you want, the weight will come off.

How many overweight people do you see 80+ years old?

keto:

low carb, high protein and fat. There are a lot of excellent keto friendly recipes out there.

I'm no diet expert; I had to get gastric-sleeve surgery to help me lose weight. So in actual fact, I'm a "failed dieter". James Yeager, when he was trying to lose the weight said, "You can't outrun a fork"! (I think that might have been the smartest thing that's ever come out of his mouth. Lol).

Ten years ago I lost sixty pounds by changing my eating habits. I went from 240 to 180, and it took about a year to do it. Well, about five years ago I lost half my thyroid (benign mass), and it messed with my weight. Then, bad eating habits crept back in, and before you know it I'd gained back half of what I'd lost. So, a month ago I decided to get back to where I was. I know how, it was just mustering up the discipline that was the problem. Now I'm a month into it and seeing results. I've lost ten pounds since I started, just by cutting certain things out (like ice cream and Costco blueberry muffins) and eating smaller portions, and nothing in between meals. For a treat in the evening, I found an excellent low-cal hot chocolate recipe that satisfies my craving for something sweet. I've already started fitting back into clothes I haven't worn for a while, not comfortably, but I'm on my way. Twenty pounds to go!

I wish you well in your quest!

The best diet in my opinion is to eat the things you like instead of trying to go on some kind of strict regimen of “healthy” foods that you don’t usually eat. Just eat smaller quantities and lose weight gradually by consuming fewer calories than you burn. You need a new way of eating that you can stick to for the rest of your life rather than a temporary diet that you hate.

A low carbohydrate diet works for me and my wife. It is best to keep the daily carbohydrate intake to under 100 to drop weight and inches. I used DietDoctor dot com for info and recipes.

One successful strategy is the "add in" diet. Instead of strictly restricting yourself from the things you like (keep the carbs and other sugars low) is to add in something especially helpful on a regular basis. Think green veggies, raw fruit, salads, limited nuts ... plus exercise. Best

I am maintaining my weight at between 150 and 155 lbs. I weighed 153.2 lbs last Sunday morning, my "official" weigh in day. I want to get to 150 pounds, and stay there.

I was 180 pounds on August 12, 2019, fat and uncomfortable, and decided I was gonna loose weight. I just stopped eating so much. My MBH is a wonderful cook, but I cut portions and counted calories until I could remember my approximate intake.

I feel much better, but I look like the rag man, because all my clothes are too large.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I've tried the low carb/keto route a few times, but it just didn't do anything for me. Didn't matter how much fat or protein I ate, I was always hungry. So I went the opposite route, a low-fat/high-carb diet, i.e., plant-based. I did much better on it. In the first 3 months, my A1C went down by 30%. My doctor said he hadn't seen any of his patients drop their A1C that much without insulin. I was losing weight, until my diet went not-so-healthy *cough*BurgerKingImpossibleWhopper*cough*. My A1C also nudged up a few tenths. It didn't help that my other health issues have made it difficult for me to exercise. Working on getting myself back on track. It's difficult when I don't often have the energy to cook. *shrug*

While low carb/keto works, plant-based also works. Just depends what's easier for you to stick with long-term. For me, plant-based/vegetarian is the better choice.

Good luck with your health improvement endeavors.

Keto is not universally effective for everyone.
My daughter uses it with great success in controlling seizures rather than weight.
My wife cannot lose a pound on it. But responds very well to a plant based.
I do OK with it but find I need to alter it some. I have to up the protein intake and reduce the fat some. Then I feel better and stay trimmer.

Eat less, move more, everything in moderation. If I make it to 70+, I’m taking up smoking . . .

There's some really nice hiking trails out here too where both my wife and I have lost lotsa weight. We're planning on our first hike of the year tomorrow.

About 18 months ago I was 100 pounds over my ideal weight. I came to the realization that it was time to get more serious about losing weight or just admit that I don't care about living much longer.

My doctor had been urging me to go to Weight Watchers. The problem is I can't stand WW. So I kind of jokingly made a deal with myself that if I couldn't lose 10% of my weight in 6 months, I had go to WW. And stay with WW until I did lose the weight. Yuck!

I cut out sweets, carb-rich foods, and stopped drinking. The latter was very important, maybe not as much to do with calories as with attitude. I just wasn't serious about much of anything (like sticking to a weight loss plan) once I had a few drinks.

Portion control was also critical. Previously, I always had two sandwiches, two hamburgers, two servings of dinner, etc. Now it's ONE. Eat slowly because that's it.

I achieved the 10% goal in 3 months. By the 6 month point it was over 20%. Any time the temptation to overeat crept into my mind it vanished when I thought, "Next stop: Weight Watchers!"

Now about 18 months in, the total weight loss is 84 pounds (29%). So the 100 pound weight loss goal is within reach. It's really true that there is no food that tastes as good as being thin feels.

I am hoping that good weather and a new knee will get me get me exercising. That plus the lifetime diet change should help me get there in the next 6 months.

And to think, I owe it all to Weight Watchers!

Others here can tell you that there are only a few rules for folks our age per the doctor:
1 - If it tastes good, you cannot eat it.
2 - If it is fun, you cannot do it.
3 - You cannot die of boredom before you pay the doctor's bill.

My grand mother lived in front of the TV eating candy and junk food till she died in her mid 90's.

My grand dad would take a piece of bread and soak up the grease from the frying pan and eat it. He loved sweets too. He only made it to 91 or 92 I think.

Cutting out the carbs is the important part. If the carb intake is not low enough, then you don't achieve ketosis. The high fat part of the diet then works against you and is stored rather than used for energy.

Insulin resistance can also be an issue. My sister has been doing keto for years and couldn't lose weight. Turned out she is resistant, the doc put her on metformin, which helped a lot. She has to be very strict with the diet.

I've been losing weight for the last 9 months and all I did was stop taking seconds and dropped desserts. The first normal size plate of food is all I eat. It works for me as I've lost over 35 lbs. so far. I'm starting to look at new clothes which fit and aren't so "baggy".

Default My 2¢ worth.

Why in heaven's name, would anyone in their right mind, want to live longer, if deprived of everything enjoyable? It makes absolutely no sense to me.

Eat less, move around more, That's it. Pretty dsimple really you jusrt need to aclimate yourseld to the smaller portions. Eat slow and wait for your bosy to get full. THESE are the two must important things you can do.
DO NOT EAT anything white. KETO was a miracle for me but it didn't work for the wife. Scotch has NO carbs but it does have right at 100 calories per oz. Red wine os ok also but in moderation. Beer is absolutely out Have not had a beet in two yrears. I do miss a pint of Guiness

The dr. put my father-in-law on a diet a few years ago saying he needed to lose about 20 pounds. We called him a week or so later and asked how the diet was going. He said it wasn't. We asked him why and he said, "I got hungry on that thing."
