About 15 years ago my inlaws wanted me to find a handgun they could carry in their motorhome. Seeing that after I paid for it I probably wouldn't be paid back, I set out to buy the absolute cheapest handgun I could buy. I finally found a S&W Model 10-6 police trade-in for less than $200.00 that showed a lot of wear. To my surprise, the action was slicker than snot on a door knob and also locked up tighter than a drum. It shoots most .38 ammo to point of aim. I can easily hit a Coke can at 25-35 yards with Winchester JSP+P. After a year or so they decided they didn't want a handgun around and gave the gun back to me. It was the first S&W I owned and I was so impressed, I own many more Smiths now. I love to backpack and am out as much as possible all year round. It has been my constant companion for many, many miles. A little on the heavy side, but it's a gun I totally trust in every situation. Here's a picture of model 10, my Ontario TAK knife, and my day pack. -Just thought I'd share.

You absolutley can't beat a Model 10 for economical, pratical use. I prefer the thinner barrels, but a heavy barrel is just fine, too. Its good you got it back since it seems they didn't appreciate your efforts.

I tend to pamper my revolvers lately so this one gets more use.

I pretty much carry all of these equally, but tend to lean more toward the 624 and 27-2 (I have been carrying the 29-2 more, but I got it not that long ago.

Actually, the 637 (with the original grips, not these Pachmayrs), with snake shot, while fishing:

At this point semiretired 4506 but it is the most used S&W in the inventory. I contoured the trigger guard from concave to convex and machined the slide to accept the rear Novak sight. Oh yes bead blasted the slide and frame.

This one's with me every day in my shop.

The anodized finish is failing and the stainless is scuffed but she still shoots pretty good!

Will probably go in for a refinish one day.

This is my 1958 vintage 29. It has traveled many miles in my car, when I hiked, or camped, or just outdoors exploring.

Photog..that looks a lot like my 5" Skeeter gun. Mines probably been around the world twice mileage wise.

No way to post a pic but my pre war S&W .22-32 Target has a lot of miles on it,too. Excellent tril gun, taken a lot of camp meat thru the years. Finish mostly gone but still is accurate.

I don't have any awesome Smiths yet, just a few 19s, a PC 629, and this model 64. This is the first revlver I ever bought, and it's my favorite. It's on me all the time.

Iggy,
I really like that model 19. Just looks like it's built for business.

This one spends most of it's life either in a pocket holster or the nightstand.

First gun I carried in anger, the M10. Issued to US Army Aviators in 1962. I was 18, learned to shoot it, should have "lost" it and brought it home

That just goes to show that an old Smith is better than a new 'other' gun. I don't care how worn it is, I'll take it in a heartbeat.

I had a somewhat similar experience regarding the Model 10. Was approached by an older lady wanting to know if I was interested in buying an old gun. I told her I honestly wasn't but - "what do you have?" She reached into her carry bag and came out with a lump wrapped in a cloth. Unfolded it to reveal a Model 10-5 in amazing condition - probably a 95%. According to the serial number it was made in the late 60's and I'd guess it had only had a couple of boxes run through it. Very tight and very smooth and with a trigger that is fantastic. I asked her how much she wanted for it and she said $300. I sort of mumbled to myself - "let's see - it will cost me to do the transfer" and she said "$275." We did the deal and the gun has become my favorite - well - one of my favorites. It had the original grips on it with serial numbers on the inside matching the gun. I saved them of course, but put checkered - finger grooved wood grips on it and I can almost drive tacks with it. What a great gun.

It is nice to see a gun with some wear upon it. A nice interesting piece. All the bluing loss tells of a life well traveled. However that Safariland holster must be a new addition.

The old m-17 is the one used & carried the most. I live in rural
area with very low crime rate and biggest predator is a coyote.
So I have no need to tote a center fire revolver.

Another necro-thread!

Since I recognize a name or two from the original post, any updates on this? Still have the original gun? Working gun or safe queen? Still as happy with it?
