That looks like Polkberry. It should get purple berries on it and you can make ink out of them and dip a quill in it.

It sure looks to me like what, in Michigan, we call Pokeweed. Can get easily 5-6 feet tall or taller, with berries that eventually turn purple.

Pokeweed, Poke Sallet (some say Salad), whatever you want to call it, it is poisonous if consumed. All parts of common pokeweed are toxic to humans, pets and livestock. Roots are the most poisonous, leaves and stems are intermediate in toxicity (toxicity increases with maturity), and berries are the least toxic.

And yet people still eat the stuff.....

Poke it is, I have been picking and EATING for the last 10 days. The young
tender leaves are what you want to eat. I usually just bring it to a boil
and then drain the water off. Some vinegar to taste, it's a wonderful
green to eat. I have also had scrambled eggs and poke, or finally chopped
and added to an all vegetable omelet.
If you like cooked greens of any kind, try it you will like it.
All country people in the South eat poke, never knew anyone ODing on
poke.

We ate stuff like that growing up, and I remember how good it tasted! But boy oh boy did I turn out to be allergic to it. Almost as bad as if I'd chewed up some poison ivy! I was a young boy, and shoveled it down becsuse it was so tasty, with a bit of salt pork in it,......yummy!

But the roof of my mouth and tongue drove me crazy for a while. I think Granddad made me drink buttermilk (which I can't stand to this day), until I threw it all up.
Haven't tried to eat any of it since. It's possible that I've outgrown the allergy by now, but I'm just to chicken to try. I think the berries they produce are poisonous.

Someone can correct me if I'm mistaken.

Kraynky, to answer your question, yes all parts of the plant is somewhat
toxic. Always eat the young tender leaves. Some people do eat the
young stalks, cut, battered and fried somewhat like okra. Mature plants
you had better forego.
Food allergies are another case, people die from eating peanuts, almonds
and other nuts. Several stone fruits are poisonous if you eat enough.

So, are you going to eat it or just cut it down?

You’d be mistaken if you eat it again.
I’ve seldom heard of a description of something that would steer me clear of something than what you described!
“ Yeah, mmm...this is some good stuff. I’m gonna eat a bunch and chase it with some buttermilk until I puke it all up.
Mmmm, give me another spoonful”

In early times the berries were used as a base for paint. That's why many early houses were painted purple.

LOL! HA! Yeah, eating it again would be "stoopid", I just recall how good they tased as I was eating them. Couldn't believe anything tasting that good would be harmful. But I did learn my lesson.

I see it growing around my place from time to time and am always reminded of the one time I ate it. I just bush hog or mow it down.

You par-boil it and pour the water off and then add clean water and cook it. serve like any other green, vinegar etc to taste. I ate a lot of it as a kid.

I took my little patch of it out this morning. The world is full of stuff that is good for you and not poison in any way shape or form and tastes good. I see no need too risk eating it.

We boil it, drain it, then fry it in bacon grease and scramble some eggs i with it. Salt and pepper to taste. It is delicious!
