Default TAG Heuer watches

I'm thinking about purchasing a new TAG Heuer watch. I would really like a Rolex but that's not going to happen. The model I'm thinking about is called a Formula 1. Any thoughts on the brand? Where to buy? Thanks.

The Formula 1ís Iíve seen have quartz movements and cost between $1300 and $3500. Thatís a lot for a battery operated watch. Tag Heuer also doesnít have the respect it once had by a lot watch enthusiasts. Resale wonít be great.

As much as I admire Rolex, I donít own one. Initial price and service costs are too rich for my blood. There are a lot of quality watches available in your price range and many of them are heavily discounted if you know where to look. Seiko makes some great products, including their acclaimed Grand Seiko line. Tudor, Breitling, Ball, Rado and Glycine and also make quality time pieces.

Christopher Ward is a small London based maker of Swiss watches that sells direct. They make some really nice stuff and they have several clearance sales every year. You can get a quality automatic with a beautiful finish for under $1500.

I frequent a site where the members list watch deals. Sometimes the discounts are 70% or more. Iíll send you a link. If any other members are interested, shoot me a PM.

Well, you have said something without saying anything. What model? What purpose do you want it for?

I bought a Rolex 30 years ago. Wear it a couple times a year. I used to wear it every day years ago. Serviced it a couple years ago, 600.00. Now back in safe.

Quartz will be your most accurate. Rolex is reasonably accurate. They never claim to be most accurate, just most rugged. I have no Idea what a Rolex costs today, but I am sure it is plenty, and nobody discounts them.

My every day watch is a Bertucci

Good to know. Thank you. I know very little about watches. From your comment, I take it that battery operated watches are looked down upon in the higher end/collector/quality watch world. I hadn't even given that a thought.

This will be a dress watch. And I was hoping to get something before next Friday because I want to wear it to a fundraising dinner that I'm going to in Chicago next Saturday. Flying out on Friday. The required dress for the event is "business casual" and I normally dress in "welder". I have to buy something to wear and I've been wanting a nice watch. I do have a Seiko, but it has a broken crystal. My everyday watch is a Casio G-Shock that I treasure because it was a present from my son. But I like the "Rolex" style look. Will consider all quality brands. Thanks.

My brother and I bought used Rolexes in 1990. Both were Oyster/ Day/ Date/ Stainless (no gold). His had the standard 3 row band, mine had the 5 row "Jubilee" Band, we paid about 25% of going new retail. Often used watches have a presentation inscribed on the back of the watch. That part is inexpensive to replace, but we never did. (Ours were Retirement watches from Coca-Cola, Canada, that gave them a little Coke collector value!) I have mine serviced in 2003 and the Jeweler stole mine and several expensive jewels, that got him 10 years in the Grey Bar Hotel!

My brother still wears his every day, never has needed any service. He also bought himself a second one with about 1/10 being gold and his wife one that matches it (She wears that one every day, and mucks the horse stalls in it!)

If you have body chemistry that messes up a watch, the type of stainless in Rolexes' is non-magnetic. Mine kept time to within 2 minutes a year before the first cleaning and to within 1 minute a year before it was stolen. Good enough to sail around the world and navigate with. The only time my brother and I wouldn't wear them was days we poured concrete!

If the Seiko is dress style, go to a watch repair place and see if you can get the crystal replaced quickly?

I do not like chronograph watches with all the dials.

Rolex has the style, name, reliability, and reputation, but you are going to pay for it. I bet a new Datejust gold and silver is going to be 10K at a guess for 36mm size. Brietling is not cheap either.

I see men wearing sneakers with suits on TV, so I would not get hung up on dress style. I like a good field watch. To me that meets business casual which I guess is nice slacks, polo of dress shirt, and a jacket and maybe loafers?

OK, I have to ask what is the main reason for buying a Rolex? I assume so people will see you own a Rolex!

Swiss watches are hard to beat, but prices paid are for the name more than the quality today. Are their watches as good as Rolex out there at much lower price - absolutely. Personally, I own a Raymond Weil and a Tag Heuer, both lower end watch models. Had both for over 25 years and have done nothing more than change the battery in them every couple years. They keep perfect time, are waterproof, and always work perfectly. Guess that is a function over form decision??

I know that other Swiss watches do not have the "wrist appeal" of Rolex, but I would rather take my several thousand dollar savings and buy more S&Ws!

Have a Rolex and a Tag.
They are both locked in the Safe.
Being a Recovering Type A, I don’t wear a watch.
Otherwise I keep checking the time to insure we are on schedule and hitting all of our check points.
Even when we don’t have a schedule.

Except Don Williams.
He’s still living on Tulsa Time.

I always liked the old Formula 1 Tag Heuer watches.

There's an Omega speedmaster on a popular auction site right now for around $ 2.2K.

An option around $600 may include: Frederique Constant Business Timer.

By the way, there is a ton of higher-end jewelers etc. in Northbrook, just north of where you are headed.

Omega is a lot of watch for the money. On the spot accuracy. You will not be disappointed.

Datejust bought in 1991. List 4500.00 less 20% discount = 3,600.00. new. You will not find anybody to discount one today, and Rolex uses 18K gold that is right up there now.

Not a watch that I would be buying today

My current watch is a Hamilton manual wind up watch mad for the Army in 1975, I has a Tritium dial so when it dies it needs radiation type disposal. At the Jewelry stores that carry Hamilton, a quarts, non tritium listing for $400. My old watch need wound every day, but people that matter to me, know what it is and it gets as much respect as my Rolex ever did. One of the guys at church is a retired Structural Engineer and is a former small craft pilot. He has the "Pilot Mandatory watch with all the small dials and circular slide rule, but he hasn't worn it for ages. When I told him what the go for now versus when he bought it in 1966, he about fainted! He was hoping on of the grandkids would become a pilot, but that isn't going to happen. So he donated it to the church and they sold it for missionary money. There are many very good watches sitting unused in jewelry boxes that have a surprising value!

Bought my Submariner in the 70's, price was $236! But that was a week's pay! One reason for buying was as previously stated, corrosion resistance due to my body chemistry having destroyed several other brand watches. I was doing a lot of diving also back then, and having a Rolex on your wrist was prestigious, as well as functional.
I wore mine to work, and broke the band while running a concrete pump. Went through the hopper, luckily missed the gates closing on it, and then down about 500' of line! Worker on the end of the line saw a flash in the mix coming out of the line, and pulled it out! Called me on the radio, and asked how many lunches was a Rolex worth! 🤔
Other than the band, no damage, and as another watch brand ad says "still ticking"!
Cost of service later, no more diving, aging, and wearing several medical devices that have the time on them, led me to retire it! Had it appraised a while back, and worth substantially more in today's market! In fact my homeowners insurance refused to cover it anymore due to the appraised value submitted. Hummmmm?

I am actually going to a fundraising dinner at a place called "Pinstripes" in Northbrook. My son and his girlfriend live in Skokie. The dinner is on Saturday. I don't think I'll have time to do any shopping.

I am a big fan of Omega. All or more than the quality and history of any other brand but not as likely to bring negative comments about "showing off" that a Rolex sometimes bring. You can spend more, but I'm not sure you can get a better quality watch. I have a Seamaster Planet Ocean I wear 24/7.

DIsclosure: I have worn my Rolex Seadweller as an everyday watch since I bought in back in 1996. That's what I bought it for....not to keep in a vault. The band has stretched out to the point that I was not comfortable wearing it and a new band cost damn neatr qwhat I paid for the whole watch!! SO I bougt a nice $30 nylon band took the metal band off and now wear the watch with the cheap band. Function over form.
Agani who cares what people think!! Wear the Casion

Form over function. Quartz battery powered watch will almost invariably keep better time. So why pay $$$ for a Rolex?

Registered Magnum is an old technology revolver, with inferior metallurgy compared to a modern semi automatic. It’s heavy as Hades, will rust, and generally not nearly as functional.

Dang I want one!
A Registered Magnum that is.

Lord knows I can’t afford another expensive hobby, so I have to stick to battery powered watches.

Been wearing Seiko Automatic Diver watches since 1989....... $200 then and still less than $300 today. The latest I set 2 minutes ahead when I change the day/date ..... always within 2 min +or - for the month..... 8 sec. a day.

Also have a Seiko solar chronograph...... on a NATO nylon band ..... was about $250 8-10 years ago ... still keeping perfect time.

Dress to impress...... show them a 3913NL with Hogue checkered wood grips in a Milt Sparks Executive Companion............... now that's "BLING". And more "Bond" than any watch!!!!!!!

I actually have a Fossil but it quit working. There's a Fossil store in the mall. I should probably drop it off for repair.

I have a bunch of them, all styles. Have a Citizen and a Hamilton, my most expensive.

I wear none of them since getting my Apple Watch.

I have a Cleveland Indians watch made by Bulova that I bought in 1994. Chief Wahoo is emblazoned on the face. It had been my everyday 24/7 watch since I bought it. Unfortunately, I think the jeweler I bought it from is out of business so I couldn't get another one when I tried a few years ago.

I have two Tag Heuers. About 25-30 years ago they had a diving watch, The Black Coral II. I couldn't afford it at the time, but I sure would like it now. I also have a titanium Montblanc. It requires periodic maintenance at the US Headquarters in Fort Worth. Expensive to buy, expensive to maintain.

If you like the Rolex look but don't like the Rolex price you have an option.
Still Rolex related but not as pricey.

Tudor has recently released his "Black Bay" line. They are a tribute to the 50s Rolex dive watches that started the "Rolex look" when Rolex made good "tool watches" before entering the high lux category. The price is reasonable enough that I managed to buy 2.

A black Bay with the blue bezel.

Watches and folding knives have a very short shelf life with me. A cheap Timex will last me two or more years - good enough for me.

And I do like the Heuer. The old Heuer.

From the 70s when Heuer was a presence in the Formula 1 circuits.

I'm hard on watches and I've been wearing Seiko's for at least 30 years and have been very pleased with them. They look good and are durable. I don't think they're any less stylish than a Rolex, except maybe to the real watch connoisseurs of which I am not. This one pictured below is what I wear most days to work.

To your point, though, I do have a "dress watch", a self winding Bulova, that I typically wear when I'm in a suit & tie. Although I think my Seiko can certainly stand in as a dress watch, I like the Bulova. Seems like it cost somewhere under $1K so it's no where near the price range of a Rolex, but it keeps excellent time and requires no batteries.

I bought these two Luminox watches around 15 years ago - each cost about $100 back them. They both keep near perfect time, gaining about 2 seconds a week. Also the self-luminous markers are still good enough to see 'em in the dark.

Good enough for me. They tell accurate time, and I can read 'em in the dark.

I just couldn't decide which one to pick, because I liked them both. It still was cheaper than the Navitimer.

To many, including me, a watch is just an instrument to tell time with, not for making a fashion statment. I guess it is a plus if it looks like a Rolex or whatever other brand is fashionable if you are into attempting to impress people. To me, the only good reason to buy one of the megapriced watches is for their investment potential, not for their snob appeal. I am still wearing the same Victorinox Swiss Army watch that I bought in the mid-1990s at a garage sale for about $10 (but it was NIB then), and the only things I have done to it in all that time is to change batteries every few years, and replace bands as needed. I think I am now on my fifth or sixth band. The only time I need to reset it is when DST begins and ends, as it doesn't gain or lose a minute between those events. And I believe it looks good enough to wear at any social event, except that its crystal is somewhat scratched up. If I thought I needed a Rolex, I would probably buy one of the counterfeits sold on eBay.

I inherited two Invicta watches and one Stauer watch from my deceased B-I-L a couple of years ago, but haven't worn any of them - too bulky. The Swiss Army is smaller and much more comfortable to wear. I know nothing about Invictas, except they have constant infomercials on TV, so I have to believe they are less than prestigious. All I know about the Stauer is that they advertise in magazines a lot.

I had a Tag for more than 20 years. A few battery changes, and one repair to the band/clasp and it has been great It is all SS (dive watch), but I wear a cheap Casio digital dive watch these days. The TAG is my school colors and is more of a dress watch than anything else. I don't wear a watch everyday anymore, now that I have a cell phone, who needs it?

To be fair, a lot of folks have mistaken it for a Rolex over the years....it is nice, but it isn't a Rolex.

Seiko is probably one of the best values out there; really well made.

Citizen eco-drive is another one that is a really good value.

Being an 80's kid, I will forever have a couple Swatch watches. :-)

I bought a new Seiko 5 Autowind in South America in 1972, cost me about $30 new at that time. It lasted me into the early 1990s when it began stopping at random intervals. When I learned it would cost me around $50 to get it cleaned (with no guarantee), I decided to retire it. I sold it on eBay about 10 years ago for about what I paid in 1972. I was working in the Persian Gulf area in the early 1980s, and back then, genuine Rolexes could be had there for several hundred dollars. I wish I had bought one (or a dozen). I did almost buy a Movado there, but I decided I didn't need it.

Gordy-- I have a variety. For value in a Swiss=Made dress watch, consider the Tissot. Top row, third from the right. You can borrow it if you like!

DO NOT buy a tag, like others have said poor resale value if any they use plastic in there movements save up and buy the watch you really want. Trust me youíll be glad you waited. I just got the watch i lusted after a marathon CSAR. Look at the seiko marinemaster automatic. Itís called the japan rolex a lot of people believe it is better than the submariner

Buy a watch that you like, not because of the hype. Rolex is priced out of hype you can find fake Rolexes for the price of a brand new TAG, Brietling, Omega, etc. I myself would not buy a Rolex outside an authorized dealer- and good luck finding one you'll like outside the run of the mill stainless steel Datejusts-sports models are not available, not even on a waiting list basis.
I've had two TAG Heuers, an Formula1 and an Aquaracer. The F1 had a Quartz movement, very accurate but I didn't like paying $250 to have the watch serviced and the battery replaced every five years. I got the Aquaracer GMT Automatic (Pepsi) after trying one on and liking the heft of it 43mm, 21 mm lug width. I paid about 3K US$ after tax for mine.

If you decide to buy one, I would suggest you try one on and purchase it online from a reputable dealer, they seem to have better pricing if you check online. Good luck to your search!

I was ready to splurge and buy an Omega Speedmaster Professional, the "Moonwatch".
Then they updated the movement and the price went up about $2000. I'm on the fence now and will probably still buy one but may consider a used one from a reputable dealer who has serviced it and offers some kind of guarantee. It won't be an everyday watch but I have wanted one since Apollo 11 and I'm not getting any younger.

My recommendation.. (And you KNOW how much I like my ROLEXES )

My OMEGA actually keeps better time than the ROLEX.

You might want to check out Buy and Sell Used Rolex, Omega, and Luxury Watches Online | Bobís
I have had dealings with them for years..

Bobís is legit and honest. Sold a Rolex to them, got way more than offers elsewhere, way more.

After reading this, I pulled out from the dresser drawer the new Invicta Automatic Pro Diver I mentioned earlier that came from my deceased B-I-L a couple of years ago. I have never worn it, and really didn't know anything about it. See a picture of one like it on #19. It's pretty much a knockoff of the Rolex Submariner, and it has a Seiko self-wind movement. Reading up about it a little, it seems that most believe that it is a pretty decent watch (and is waterproof) despite its low price. I think I will try wearing it for a few days to see what I think. I don't have too many adventures like this at my age.

I didn't read all the posts here, so I don't know what the opinions and recommendations are. IMO, if you want a Tag Heuer, go for the provenance and get a Monaco, it's what Steve McQueen wore:
TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph Calibre HEUER02 Automatic Men 39 mm - CBL2111.FC6453

If you want an Omega, get one of the models the NASA astronauts used, like this one:
Speedmaster Moonwatch ďSilver Snoopy AwardĒ 50Th Anniversary | OMEGA(R)

If you want a nice dress watch that will run forever, you don't have to shake or wind or replace batteries in, won't break the bank, looks great and is accurate as heck, get a Citizen.

I've been a Seiko fan since I was a teenager, have had three in the 50 years since I was 17, but they all sit in a drawer now, batteries long dead and removed. I wear this Citizen chronograph, a WWII USAAF navigator's replica, paid about $225 for it:
