My friend only carried an M14 until he was severely wounded by a land mine and was sent back for 24 months in an army hospital in Colorado

When I went though boot camp we had several guys who could not read. During platoon competition, I took one set of militarily knowledge tests under 3 different names. Seriously.

When I came in they were just filling quotas with warm bodies. All the 0311 types went to Boot Camp & Infantry Training and straight to Viet Nam. They were mostly two year enlistments. By the time they came back from Viet Nam (if still in the vertical position) they were discharged, as it wasn't economical to send them to a new duty station for a couple of months.

I was in a group of guys going from the induction center (MEPPS) at Miami to Parris Island. I was put in charge because I was the smartest at 17, several were in their 20's.

During conscription in the UK post WWII, anyone with a degree (if not in some version of physics) was handed three stripes or equivalent in the RN, and given the task of teaching the illiterate conscripts. The idea of making them an NCO was to enable them to use discipline to make" the illiterate or barely literate" capable of reading and understanding to at least a US Grade 6 level in three months. Worked well as you then got 21 months of military service out of them. Those with suitable degrees (and remember only ~5% of the equivalent "6th form" to US High School grads went to university in those days), were usually commissioned into the Signals, Engineers or related fields, made 2nd Lts and paid as a regular corporal for the next 2 years. By the time I finished my first degree (at 21), conscription had finished the end of the previous year, but a number of my colleagues who were a year ahead did become 2nd Lts. Dave_n

Choi oi is similar to Oh Boy but the actual meaning can differ, depending on the inflection. Unfortunately there is very little I can post from this book. Most of the content has to do with the women of Vietnam and their interaction with GIs. First edition 1965, 12th printing 1968.

Here are a couple fit-to-post pages from Choi Oi
Been there, done that experience required.

We also trained with the M14 in boot camp. At ITR were used M1's to train. After that I was always issued M14's until my release from active duty. Did fam fire a AR 15 while in Vietnam. They took us out to some sand dunes and let us fire a magazine worth of rounds. That was our introduction the the AR 15. Kept my M14 with me at all times and regularly cleaned. Really liked that rifle. It would be nice to own one again.

Unfortunately there are not many transferable M-14s out there.

More Sgt. Mike, AJ.

Dave,

I used a magnifying glass to see what was written and that is as close as I can get it.

F4 phantom, check your gun shows, can find an older M1-A in good condition, a few out there. I had one since late 70’s, 5 digit N.M., gave it to my son last year. Really don’t have a place to shoot it any more.

I had a PolyTech M14/S and is had a U.S. bolt, flash suppressor, wood stock on it. I shot a lot of rounds from M-14's in the Corps. Other than being a dedicated semi auto there was no difference to me. Of course the ones we had in the Corps had no selector locks on them so they were semi auto also.

I have an Armscorp M1A. It was accurized by Jon Wolfe, who installed a match barrel, and glass bedded the stock. I installed NM sights, a unitized gas cylinder, and a NM flash suppressor.
It will go to my Son on my passing.

Anyone have a SOCOM M-1 A? Heard some not to good comments on later ones. Often wondered about short barrels on M-14/ M-1As, same same( little RVN humor) with M-1 Garand. The muzzle Blast must be horrific?

These bring back some great memories and some that ......'ell it's hard to keep my eyes dry. Don't know what the problem is, must be some dust in the air or sump'n. couple of these I laughed so hard I really did cry. and some .... ah 'ell you know.

Thanks for put'n them up here.

Sledge the S Bird

Reminds me of my very first inspection at my first real duty station. Had meet and learned about the 2 well know S birds in the squad bay. Both pvts with needle holes showing in their shirt sleeves from rank going off and on and back off. Any way this LT Col who had just rotated back to the world is doing an inspection. He is in a good mood, he comments to me that I was to bow legged to stop a pig in a blind alley, then he gets to one of the birds, a real big blond kid. He looks him over and asked "how long you been in the Corps?" Kid goes "3 and a half years, sir." Col says, "already a private I see". Kid goes, "You know how it is sir". "Yes, I do, your hair is to long, so is your mustache and side burns, the only thing to short about you is your shirt sleeves. Never, been to Nam huh?" Pvt "No sir, haven't been sent.'' Col, "You haven't asked?" At this point the private leans out a bit bents down face to face with the Col and says "NO, SIR" Laughter in the ranks. Even the Col laughs.

This guy and his buddy get stuck on restriction. Only supposed to go to place of duty, chapel, head, mess hall and barrack. November 10th rolls around and there is of course a big shindig and where do these two go to break restriction???? The Marine Corps Birthday Ball of course. But, hey it was the Marine Corps Birthday, so nothing really happened over it. LOL

No cartoon this AM, but a true story. Hauling an ARVN Bn on a training mission after lunch. The smell of nouc mam was gut wrenching but that wasn't the worst of it. After the first lift my Old Golds and zippo were gone plus two qts. of turbine engine oil and a qt of hydraulic oil from the cubby holes between the cockpit and cabin doors. My crew were ready for a fight and the gunner armed himself with the biggest screw driver I've ever seen. On the second lift the pilfering continued but there wasn't anything left to steal. Two perps did get their GI helmets whacked when their hands went into the holes. On the third lift my CE (Crew Chief) said he had an idea. To back up a little, the ARVNs were told to wait until the ship was on the ground before deplaning, but they all thought they were John Wayne and would jump out at about 4 ft. Any way, while enroute to the LZ my CE tied the boot laces together on two guys closest to the door and I (intentionally) held us at a 5 ft hover. We all had a great laugh while we waved good bye to the pile up.

Minutes later C&C call me to say he was supposed to reprimand me. I keyed up the mike and said "Roger, concider me reprimanded."

Friday's offerings. The middle one made me think of my Recruiter. I ran into him when I came home on Boot Camp leave. He said " I didn't think you'd make it through boot camp". I was 5' 10" and 123 pounds when I joined with a 28 inch waist. When I graduated I was 165 pounds and still had a 28" waist.

The second one reminds me of a story told to me by a guy who was a door gunner. Said who should show up for transport, but one of his DIs and some troops. He tells the pilot and they come in all jerky and he opens up with his gun blazing away as they set down. Nobody around.
