I enjoy other people’s cats. Have met some really good ones.
I do not care for a cat’s personality. Too aloof, have no need for human interaction like a dog does. There is no cooperative pack behavior with cats.
But I certainly understand that those behaviors are attractive to some folks and admire their relationship with their cats. Just not my thing.
As for litter boxes, anyone who has an indoor cat will have a litter box and all will tell you “ can’t even smell it!! We clean it every day.” Or “we use brand X super puper anti stink cat litter and it works perfectly.”
Y’all need to do a reality check. Cat poo and pee stink like no other and there is no masking it.
Cat owners are like smokers who cannot smell their ashtrays anymore. The fact you no longer smell it, does not mean it doesn’t stink.

And of course we cat owners only hang out with other cat owners, so we never notice the smell! Like farmers wo never notice the smell of the manure

If I move and build a new house for my gf & I, the litter boxes (because we will have multiple cats) will be in a recess in the hallway/mud room fitted with a vent fan that will minimize this. Thanks for reminding me that I need to add this to the list of essential items

Here's another of Mrs. X62503's cat, lounging on her chair by the fireplace. Ours keep our house rodent-free; they earn their keep.

I have told the wife that if she ever brought a cat home that I would be moving out. Here is why.

When my Dad was in Vietnam, another serviceman down the street was also in Nam. The wife went to Hawaii for R&R with him, and had my grandmother, who was staying with us while my Dad was away, watch her children.

She agreed to do this before seeing the inside of the house. They had a number of cats, and their excrement (any other word will get me in trouble here) was everywhere. My grandmother had me help her clean up, and it was a nasty, stinking mess. I don't think any of those cats was litter trained, and they were all consigned by us to the garage.

Two days after the woman left, her youngest, 18 months old, became very sick. He soon ended up in the hospital, and even though my grandmother tried to get in contact with the family, she received no response. Even the Red Cross had trouble getting in touch with them.

The woman returned, one day after her child died in the hospital, probably from the foul conditions in that house. An investigation was made by the authorities, and fortunately my grandmother was quickly cleared, even though the woman had some explaining to do. She also refused to pay my grandmother what she had agreed to, but she just wanted to be done with that family.

Yes, it was probably a case of bad owners rather than bad cats, but something like that made an impression on my young teenage self. As a result, I have no use for cats, now more than 50 years on.

Cats and dogs can both be great pets but they are different in a lot of ways. We've had a total of 12 cats over the last 31 years as well as 3 dogs. I don't know that I could honestly say I prefer one over the other, but as of right now all we have is one cat.

The 3 dogs we've had all had pretty similar personalities maybe because we got them all as puppies and raised them all the same way.

Our cats have often been adopted when somebody else didn't want them for one reason or another and a couple of them I'm sure had a pretty rough life before they got here. Some of them took a while to trust us, but they all turned out to be good pets eventually.

This past week I saw a mouse in the basement a couple times but he was too smart to get caught in the traps I set. He wasn't too smart for Shadow though, as we found his carcass prominently displayed one morning.

This is Shadow in his favorite resting spot.

Nice he reminds me of our car named Spooky! Appropriate as he was jet black and born on Halloween. (long ago)

Plant based cat litter. There is now an endless slideshow of return scenarios playing in my head.

Rather than buy expensive wood pellets branded for cat litter, we buy 40 pound bags of equine bedding pellets from the local farm store for $4.99. The cats don't seem to know the difference or don't care.

I use old-fashioned "cat litter." The hardwood pellets go in the pellet stove

Once I used "The World's Best" cat litter I wouldn't use anything else. It's made from corn, and that means you can flush it without worrying and if you scoop it like you should, it lasts a long time before it gets funky. You can get it scented (WHY??) or unscented. We used several different brands of litter before my mom got her cat in 2006, and TWB is the way to go. Clay litter is just a stinking hassle.

This the stuff? I'll pass this on to my gf (of Izzie and "Epic Whiskers Charlie" fame.) She already buys their food from Chewy and I see they carry it.

This is Smoquet(my daughter named her). We just brought her home from getting spayed. She is a bit groggy so we are having a bit of a lie down. A cat purring on your chest is a therapeutic experience.

She is sable gray. Bad cellphone pics with the sunlight glare from open blinds.

I don't know what it is with cats and cucumbers...

These cats in the hats crack me up...

There are more videos of cats and cucumbers and cats ringing the bell for treats on youtube. Easy to find and just more fun to watch.

A couple of weeks ago a lttle cat showed up on my neighbor’s fence. There is a big field behind our house, with lots of coyotes and raptors. Somebody probably dumped it there.

I put the picture of Facebook and Nextdoor. Nobody said it was their cat.

I put out a trap and caught it a few days later. It was a sweet little girl, collar but no tag. I updated my posts with - Hey, I caught it.

No response. I took the little thing to the shelter so Randy the Rottweiler wouldn’t eat it. I update my post with - Hey, its at the shelter.

I immediately got leapt upon. “That could be somebody’s outdoor cat! Now they’ll have to pay to get it out!”

My response: It was in my yard. If the owner had spent 6 bucks on a tag, I would have called. If they had spent $45 on a chip, the shelter would have called. There are very few coyotes loose in the shelter, so it will probably live through the night. Expletive deleted.

I hope someone who cares about it will adopt it.

You can argue if cats are better than dogs. They are definitely better than people, though.

sigp220.45:

My wife and I love cats. We have seven, now that the oldest passed away last year. 5 are walk-ons (meaning they were dumped out here in the country and just showed up on our ranch). The other 2 were adopted from friends who rescued a momma cat and her babies (all 7 of them) abandoned in their neighborhood in the city. 3 live in the barn and 4 live in the house. They all roam free on the property during the day but are tucked inside safely at night. We've lost a few to predators (mostly coyotes) and we learned the hard way to keep them in at night.

As a last resort, I've had to trap a few feral cats that beat up on ours and couldn't be handled any other way. Took them to the pound where they surely met their demise. Your cat looks domesticated and was surely someone's pet at one time (just like our walk-ons). Hopefully someone will adopt it. I applaud you for going to the trouble to save that cat from predators in your area.

I probably should have added two of my neighbors had seen the little gal on their yard cameras well after midnight. I don’t think she was going home at night.

Are you a Cat Person?

My first cat circa 1940, was a female domestic kitten that I named Toby. I sometimes called her Hoots. She followed me on most of my paper route, but being a weak unfed, stray kitten, she played out. I hated to leave her there stranded, and let her hop into my news-paper carrying sack, and she rode there, contentedly, the rest of the way home. Later, she and a neighborhood Tom cat, became friends, and Toby presented our family with two kittens, that I named one De- De, and the other Posy, as she slept in a neighbor’s flower urn.

I haven’t tried to make friends with cats, but I seem to attract them, even ones that were known for their animosity toward strangers. Owners of a few of that type, gave me strict warnings, not to try to touch, or try to make friends with their fierce, hatful cats, but in minutes some of those cats were on my lap, purring. A couple of those cat owners claimed that even their spouses ‘couldn’t touch their cats, and never had a stranger. That I was able to, has never been explained to me.

A next-door neighbor couple, used to bring their Cat, on their daily visit, to our house. That cat was a large, Tom, Main Coon Cat, that I nicknamed Garfield. He delighted in his visit. Garfield brought his wild game catches to our doorstep to share with my wife and I, rather than to share with his owners. Why?

I’ve observed some amazing shows of intelligence, humor, loyalty, and love, shown by domestic felines.

I’ll qualify myself as a Cat Person, although I haven’t owned one for many years, since my last cat was killed by a nasty, careless neighbor, that was also a poor marksman.

Please pardon my long-winded story of the cats, that I have associated with. They mean, a lot, to me.

Our cat is about 40 years old and is very sedentary now. Just lays on the shelf of my snow shoe table.
He and my dog get along great.

My cats are part of my final exit plan. When I die and the cats don't get fed on time, I figure nature will take it's course. Then all someone will have to do is come in to clean out the litter box. No undertaker required.

Be careful what you wish for. The results will make it clear what they REALLY thought about you all those years

I was wondering how long it would take before someone came up with that. It's taken 187 posts. Caje gets official mention for "Admirable restraint."

We are putting the tree up today. The cats usually view that as a defoliation challenge and they generally win. We may have found the answer.

An isolation ward for the Christmas tree to protect it from the insidious Cat-o-virus and the "Debauble-izer" variant

I went out on a call years ago to bid on a remodeling job. They had several cats using one or two litter boxes and the place reeked. I never called them with a price lol
I’ve had one cat at a time along with a dog most of my life. There was no reason for that stench other than neglectful owners.I keep a box handy, but my cats have always been and always be indoor/outdoor cats for that reason

We've has 1 cat since 2008, and 2 cats since 2012. Sadly, Oliver Kitty passed in September, so we're down to just Chessie Cat now.

But, there was no litter box stench since both cats were litter box trained, and we scooped the 2 litter boxes daily, and changed out the bags and litter every week.

If you clean them daily, and use good quality litter, there will be no smell. IF you don't there will be, simple as that.

I was till tonight at 8:45PM when I found my cat dead in the garage.

She was a wicked evil feral cat born on my patio back in 2006. I was the only person that could pet her. I think she jumped in my lap 3 times her adult life.

Birth Certificate I made just for fun years ago.

My sincere condolences She made it to 15, which is pretty good. Had she shown any signs of illness?

She looks a little like my neighbour's b&W, Toby, who isn't exactly feral, but is clearly nuts and generally avoids people. His BFF was her golden retriever, whom he would snuggle up to regularly, although after the retriever died, Toby started sleeping on Gretchen's bed.

I've lost a few over the years, but only one was found; the others "just disappeared". I don't know which is worse

About 14 years ago I adopted an Abyssinian/Bengal mix kitten. She was a dog in a cats body. Easy to train, listened well, and traveled well. She suddenly got sick several months ago and had to be put to sleep. I stopped by the animal shelter and adopted a stray kitten that, as it turns out, is a Burmese. Both breeds are similar, very active and love to run, jump and climb.

Both breeds are very social and active, they keep their kitten like tendencies for years longer than other breeds, and they have a "personal assistant" personality. They actually want to be around you for more than just to be fed.

She'd been eating like a horse, but drinking 90% more water than usual. Been getting sick a couple times a week too, but she'd done that for years.

She was at the vet less than a year ago, and they did a pretty good check up on her.

She couldn't have asked for a better life.
