This combination allows for better maneuvering at speed (think sand) than the Rubicon package which has a 410:1 low range transfer case. The Gladiator is at its best in an off road environment, but runs very well on the highway.

We were looking at Jeeps at the beginning of the year, our primary considerations being solid off-road chops with good road manners, and that we could flat tow it.

We landed on the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. The Wranglers just don't offer a lot of value at their price point, and we didn't need the additional capability the Wrangler offers in extreme off roading. They also aren't very good on the highway. The GC is great on the highway, and doens't give up much capability (in the Trailhawk, at least) until you get to really rough trail running or rock crawling.

Our GC Trailhawk has been fantastic, and we'll have close to 16k miles by the end of the year, including two cross country highway trips, and several hundred miles tooling around the backcountry in Capitol Reef Nat'l Park.

Ultimately, though, it's all about what makes you happy.

I had a 1976 Jeep Wagoneer with a 360 cubic inch V8. I was the Guard Chief at a Naval Weapons Station at the time. We ran drills on my Guards, one day we decided to use my Jeep as the Aggressor Vehicle. The Assistant Guard was chasing me with a Jeep Cherokee through a plowed field. We were going across the furrows, not with them. He was doing fine as long as he stayed in my tracks. I did some maneuvering to get him out from behind me and we lost him in the dust. When we made it out of the field we were looking for him and did not see him. After about five minutes he finally came out of the field. He got out of the Cherokee and started kicking the side, hollering "It quit on me, the darn thing f'ing quit on me!". We got him calmed down and found out that when he had to bust through the furrows with the Cherokee it just would not take the pounding and quit running. After that my Guards call my Jeep a tank and if it got near their areas they went on high alert figuring the 1stSgt and myself were up to something. I also used it to pull a Ford F-350 dual wheel Pickup out of the sand once when a Sgt. of the Guard got it stuck. The only way I could stay on a hard packed road was to come at it from the side. I had a 30 foot logging chain and wrapped around the frame of the truck and to my frame mounted trailer hitch. Pull the F350 sideways to solid ground. f course I was pulling it through the sand but still sideways. Loved that Wagoneer, but was glad to sell it and get something a bit more economical.

I spend a lot of time in Ranch country, and have yet to see a Gladiator being used for ranch work. Everything is GMC, Rams or Fords.
