REMEMBER TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD?
I sure do. I and my nephew was driving up in the mountains,
stopped at a little roadhouse about a hundred miles north of
Boise for some mid morning coffee. We were the only ones in
the place except the waitress.
A couple of guys came in. I wrote a note on a piece of paper
that said "That's Tennessee Ernie Ford" and handed it to my
nephew. Ernie was looking at the juke box. My nephew called
out to him "Play something by Tennessee Ernie Ford". Ernie
smiled and came over to our table.
We had a brief but pleasant conversation. The guy he came in
with was over looking at the juke box. Ernie called out "Play
something by Dottie West". She's my favorite he said to us.
I remember in the mid 1950s he had a tremendously big hit,
SIXTEEN TONS. Do you remember Ernie? 1919 -1991

Sure do! One of my favorite singers. I still listen to him on youtube. Voice smooth as silk. Youtube has some great videos of him and the Hee Haw Gospel Quartet.

Enjoyed his work. We used that title, 16 tons as a nickname for one of the kids I went to grade school with way back then.

Yes Indeed
I remember him well, sixteen Tons was a big hit. My father had one of his gospel albums, which he would play on Sunday mornings as we were preparing to go to church.
I also remember his television show, he stipulated that he end the show with gospel songs.
A fine old gentleman.

I have requested in my funeral arrangements that they play
Tennessee Ernie Ford's rendition of Amazing Grace.

Sometimes celebrity discovery can be tricky.
A few ago at a nearby SASS event, I say, hey! Look!
There’s Buck Taylor.
She say, who’s Buck Taylor?

THE PILGRIM - You reminded me of an incident when I was driving down
the road with my granddaughter in the passenger seat. I was playing the
radio and it was Christmas time. Bing Crosby was singing White Christmas.
I said to her "that's Bing Crosby". She said "who is he"?

Ernie Ford's version of "Sixteen Tons" was an incredibly popular tune for quite a while in the mid-'50s. On the radio all the time, it seemed.

A little irony is that “Sixteen Tons”, Ernie Ford’s best-known song, was just a cover of the song which was originally written and recorded by Merle Travis in the 1940s.

I enjoyed his comment about Jimmie Carter after he was elected. In his best southern drawl Earnie said, 'It sore is nice having a president without an accent ".

Quoted from lyrics page:
Quote:
If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't get you
Then the left one will

My foster mother was a big fan of Ernie Ford. She had several of his gospel albums, which were played often. Sixteen Tons, explained the way of life in our little coal mining hollow of West Virginia. Ernest Jennings Ford, Cousin Ernie, forever the little pea picker. His was the voice of old time gospel.

Somewhere in my family history is a photo of Ole Ernie when he was visiting a distance cousin out on the West Coast.
Going from a poor memory, so bear with me. He had a live radio/tv show back in the day and folks would call in during the show and he would ask questions. My cousin lived out there and she called in and during the conversation, she invited him to come visit.
Not long afterwards he showed up. I have a photo somewhere of Ernie and my distant cousin. Now I have to dig it up and post it.
Have a blessed day,
Leon

I remember my dad made it a point to ALWAYS watch his tv show. If I remember right it was only 15 minutes long and sponsored by Martha White flour. He had an album of hymns by Ernie That he played every Sunday morning as we got ready to go to church.

Distant cousin, Ernie Ford photo.
I hope this is not breaking any rules, all the folks are long gone.
Regardless of the subjects, it is a great photo. The cousins passed away in the mid 1980's, in California.
Have a blessed day,
Leon

Ernie was on one of the early late night shows, and when asked by the host if he was nervous, said, "As nervous as a long-tailed cat in a roomful of rockin' chairs!" This was in the late 50's/early 60s.
He might not have created the idiom, but he certainly introduced it to the country outside the southeast!

If you can't make a mistake like that among your friends, it's time to find better ones.
It's a great song even with the fists reversed.

Ernie studied classical music at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (part of the University of Cincinnati). He sure knew his intervals.

I saw Stan Ridgway in concert back around 1990. He was in the band Wall Of Voodoo prior to going solo. He must have been a fan of Tennessee Ernie too, he played 16 Tons in his own inimitable style.

Amazing how smooth his voice is compared to the others. Wait for his solo part. it makes the song.

That would be Walter. Back when he was playing High School football his buddies nicknamed him W. Overtime that got shortened to Dub.

I remember bein a little kid and me & my dad watching his TV show. When he sang a song about "where were you when the ship hit the sand" my dad just about fell out of his chair laughing. Wasn't till I was older that I understood why he thought that was funny.

And with all due respect to both Merle Travis and Ernie Ford, my favorite version is Johnny Cash’s.
I like how he gives credit to both Merle and Ernie before the song:

Speaking of Dub Taylor - one of my Favorites for sure-
His first Movie was ‘ You Can’t Take it With You.’
Jimmy Stewart and others.
Dub got the role because he could play the xylophone!

I wish I could be more specific, but I recall a song done with his son, I think it was live, where the kid was acting up during a portion of the song, and Ford nearly lost it.
I wish I could be provide more details as it was uplifting to watch.
