Finally got a day where I can have the door open and fan on so I don't choke myself..and decided to try and fire it up. Amazingly..it started easily..and zero lifter noise. Not much smoke..mostly off the new exhaust. No leaks..other than the heater core..but WOW..I'm pretty shocked. Even the transmission went through all the gears. Can't take it around the block as the evil sand and salt are out there so that will have to wait. Yipee! Photo is the “new” dash. Came out good for bits snd pieces.
Video of the start: 1969 Mercury 429 first start in 42 years.It's in a 1964 F100. - YouTube

The steering is tight (kingpins and tie rods) and it will be getting new shocks. It’s actually an interesting ride. It jumps off the line well. With 4:11s and a torsen diff, (with good rubber)it’s actually quick off the line..for a 56 year old “no smoke boxes”...hot rod.
Just don’t try any high speed stuff. (I’ve got other cars for that. . )

Progress. Used some Por-15 paint on the frame. Reminds me of alkyd enamel but no odor. Bed back on chassis and more cab work ahead. Pressing on. Spring is coming.

Bed is bolted back on and the full undercarriage is all painted.(Por-15) Now into the spray booth for many hours of sanding, filling and priming. Then the finish paint.Still not sure about final color..but I'm leaning heavy toward flat super black...and some red custom hand pinstriping by a local artist.
Hope there is enough winter left for me to finish it.. Ha!!

Sanding..sanding..sanding. I remember why I stopped doing body work 15 years ago!
My trusty Snap-on DA finally died after many years of use. So did my water separator. The back-up is an off brand and useable..but not as much fun..so I decided to splurge on a new Hutchins aka the Cadillac of sanders. Should be here in a few days.
Happy to find they Bondo-ed over the hood emblem holes and the F100 emblem holes..which I will be remounting.(available new) I thought they may have welded the holes closed but not the case. Good. Found an old lead repair which was amusing, but odd. May have been from the factory. Things did happen on the assembly line.
150 pieces of 80 grit later and hundreds more to go. It is warm and very bright in the booth. Not a bad place to spend the winter..I even have piles of "sand" to walk in..

Stripping done..about 200 pieces of 80 grit and hrs of labor, but most of the maroon is off. I will now start with filling and priming.I'll use a two part primer which is high fill and an excellent rust preventative. The body is better than I expected with no hidden issues and all the panels are nice. I am actually considering going glossy black!
Al's ready for a walk. Me too..

Sounds like with that type primer, you may have just the perfect gloss-black experiment there. Gaps all look good from the pics, too. I wish I could be 1/2 that good! That motor...all good to go? That's gonna be a beast!

After restoring my share of cars and trucks, finding a truck of that vintage in that condition is like finding a needle in a haystack! Amazing how little rust there is, and the body looks absolutely undamaged, straight and correct. Whatever you put into it you will easily get back if you ever decide to sell it. Dark green would be my choice of color.

Got the inside of the bed done..lots of sanding, then POR-15, then roll-on Dupli-color bed liner. Came out nice.
I did not take out all the dents..it was a working truck and deserves to show use.
Floor of cab POR-15..now ready for the new carpet.
I'm reinforcing the old headliner panel to make it flat once again.Could buy a new one..but this one isn't terrible.Plus I like a challenge...and saving a few hundred dollars!
Then on to the main body work. Filling..sanding..more filling.
Spring is still months away..here..

My first ever vehicle was a 63 F100 with a 223 cu in SIX and three on the tree. Wish I still had it. Those drum brakes sure sucked!

POR-15 is a single part primer (open the lid and spray, roll or brush it on) that people have used for decades and swear by it. This is my first time using it and I am very impressed by its ability to cover, fill and adhere. Easy to apply, minimal overspray, and almost no odor! Takes about 2-3 days to dry..it would be faster if my shop was warmer but I like it at 60. This is from their website:
"POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating is a high performance coating designed to paint directly on prepped rusted or seasoned metal surfaces to stop rust permanently. POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating is non-porous and seals and protects many surfaces from water, chemicals, salt, and other corrosive contaminants and is able to be painted over rust. POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating is an effective anti-corrosive and rust preventive coating that offers superior chemical resistance due to its dense, cross-linked molecular composition and non-porous attributes. The secret lies in POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating's curing process. Most paints dry through evaporation, but POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating dries faster when moisture is present. It has the opposite chemistry of ordinary paints. Now add to that POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating incredible hardness, toughness, and flexibility and you have a coating that is practically indestructible. POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating is a permanent rust repair great for auto frame and chassis restoration, protecting valuable equipment against rust and corrosion."
Drum brakes are not bad... IF they are healthy and adjusted properly. The problem is when the self adjusters stop working and people keep driving with them out of adjustment. The vehicle pulls to the left or right and brake performance declines rapidly.
I did decide to convert the front brakes to disc, as the complete kit was on sale from Speedway Motors for just over $400, with free shipping, so quite the bargain!
Now tackling the tailgate. It's rough..BUT it is rust free and at zero cost, so worth restoring. I was going to find a replacement, however good condition "restorable" ones start around $600(!!) and they are not available new/aftermarket.
It's all good fun..and great exercise!

Both sides of the tailgate are done and the new disc brake kit is here.
Sanding and filling on the cab and then the nose. Bed sides will be last.
Awaiting the top coat paint to arrive..I decided on Indigo Blue metallic Flatz which will look like denim when applied.Maybe yellow/gold thread pinstripe..
Having fun with the options!

Put the color on the tailgate.Came out better than I expected. I'm pretty excited to see the truck this color. I have about 20hrs left before I can do that..but I'm much closer to the end than the beginning.

This is a relatively new paint to market. It is similar to a "wrap" job, but is sprayed on. It is a 2 part urethane enamel so it has a closed (non porous) surface, so it's easy to clean. It feels just like a glossy finish only it's a satin finish. It is fairly easy to apply and covers well. I bought a gallon to do the entire truck..but may need to buy another quart for proper coverage. We shall see.
I enjoy experimenting on my own stuff. Can't do that with customers vehicles!

Great thread. The thread title actually caught my eye. I’ve been saying for a while that Ford should make an F100. Bigger than a ranger, smaller than an F150. (I actually didn’t know they had made one in the past.)

I only sanded and painted one auto when I was back in High school but when it was done, everyone thought it was the cream of the crop.
I know your's will turn out even better with all the improvements in paint and all your equipment and knowledge that is going into that truck.
I am sort of glad that you went with the blue.
Can't wait to see the finished product.......
standard or "Tuck & roll" ?

I had a 66 F100 with the 352 and a "three on the tree". Great truck, and with a camper shell I travelled all over the Southwest with a place to sleep.

Whew! Body sanding done..it's now fully sanded and smooth to 150 grit and ready for 2 part Urethane primer. I'll wipe the entire body down with Prep-sol,which will remove any oils etc so the paint adheres properly. I'll be using a black primer. Probably tomorrow.
Next will be hand sanding the black primer with 220 grit which will fill all sanding marks left, and then a final coat of 2k. primer. Then that gets scuffed with schotch-brite and top coated.I'm going to leave the bed area black so I'll cover it before applying the blue.
Getting closer!

Painted Black. Black as night. Black as coal.
3 coats..and once dry, 220 grit sanding. Meanwhile I'll work on the rear bumper. I have an idea..

While I was waiting for the second gallon of Indigo Blue to arrive, I decided to paint the interior. I'll go glossy black.
I did a little custom work on the hood emblems..it should look nice when installed. Coming along..unfortunately regular work and racing season is now occupying my daylight hours. I'll keep plugging along though.
Got some decals for the doors..I'm sure y'all will approve..

And you can do all with wrenches and some screw drivers.
No need for a degree in computer tech.

Finally locked myself in the shop and got the truck hand sanded down with 220. This action fills in all the imperfections larger than 220 grit and does not allow "sand scratches" to show in the top coat, which is called reflection. What is under your paint is the most critical part of a good paint job..that lasts.
Next step is a single coat of 2 part black primer and then..more sanding with 320 grit paper. Then it is ready for the top coat of paint. Progress!

When I was growing up, the guy across the street had a show car. It was a 1940 Ford, and I remember the day he brought it home. It was a mess and despite his tries, wouldn't run. About two years and a lot of money, sweat and tears, later it was done. The frame and undercarriage was chromed. The engine was a blown Olds with the block and heads bronze plated and everything else chromed. But the real work of art was the paint! The car had a base coat of gold paint with 52 coats of candy apple red applied and hand sanded/rubbed over top. It was amazing and the car won 15 first places in 15 shows.
Nevertheless, I expect your paint to be superior simply because the technology and the paint itself has come so far in the time since then.

Rug is in, the 'custom fit' ones always need trimming. Fits well. Seats are in and weren't too difficult to locate holes. Now I need to work on the headliner and front grill. Coming along..

Good stuff ! Please post pics as you progress in the restoration.
My first truck was a Black 64 Step Side Ford that I got in 1975.
It had a 289 V-8.
It was a good old truck, 3 on the tree, manual choke, etc...

No..torpedo tubes. Ha! I used them to tie horses to when I horseshoed. Those aren't going back on. They weigh about 35lbs each!

They look like their made out of galvanized pipe to me. If so, I bet they are very heavy. You don't see much of that anymore.

Seats, seat belts, new carpet are all in. New windshield as well. I decided to use a simple step and tow bumper and made my own brackets. Came out pretty nice. It's shaping up well.

Maybe I'm still young after all!! I really like the color. It should really pop out in the sun.

Great looking truck!
Your truck ain’t the only thing I’m envious of, your skills are mighty impressive too.
