Ozzy Osbourne turns 73 today.
Hide your chickens and your bats.
I first saw Sabbath at the old Cincinnati Gardens in 1970. Super memorable night. Festival seating, massive sound system and fans brought their own smoke machines. That was the beginning of my Geezer Butler period.
The next day mom was gathering laundry and said "your clothes smell funny".

He doesn't look a day over a 100 yo. I wonder if his goofiness is faked?

Never was much of an Ozzy/B. Sabath fan. On the other hand, Keith Richards will still be strumming the strings when Ozzy is ancient history.

A side story;
BS guitarist Tony Iommi, at 17, lost two finger tips in a sheet metal shop accident. I can't imagine that as my fingers were my paychecks yet he overcome it. We owe his musical legacy to Django and thimbles.
Scroll down to "Accident".

Sabbath was pretty sweet. Blows my mind that Paraboid was released in 1970, we'd hear the title track and war pigs fairly often on classic rock stations as kids and surprised the hell out of me when I found out it was Vietnam era.

I never got really heavy into Sabbath in the Prehistoric Era (although I did buy their the first album, which I still have), but I am appreciating the band, and Ozzy, moreso these days.
He is a genuinely funny guy and quite knowledgeable in a lot of subjects. You should check out his son Jack's cable show, "The Osbournes Want to Believe", Sunday nights on the
Travel Channel. It is a real hoot!

At the other end of Geezer's frequency range.
Digital delay/reverb fun on the left.
Played with a Maestro Wind Machine with my Tenor sax and double reeds as a young teenager.
Teachers and school were well equipped.
Even loaned me an Albert System clarinet.
Good thing we had a basement.

Zakk is a beast as was Randy Rhodes and both have their loyal fans.
I have had a number of these Zakk Wylde LP's pass over the counter.

I saw Black Sabbath at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland in 1978. The opening band was one I'd never heard of- Van Halen.
Ozzy and BS were good (I'd been a fan for a few years), but I was completely blown away by Van Halen. Their performance easily makes my Top Ten list.
As a side note, a friend saw Sabbath at an outdoor concert. He was right up next to the stage, and some guy grabbed his butt. He turned around and hit him in the mouth, and the fight was on. My friend looked up, and there was Geezer playing his bass, looking down at the whole thing!

Whether you admire or pity Ozzie, you almost have to like him. Like many of us, a simple man still struggling to earn enough money keep up with his wife's spending.

If Ozzy got royalties from all the garage bands that have played Paranoid at their local church hall, he would own Amazon.

My God! Sabbath came out as the Doors burned out, Alice was risin', King Crimson then ELP, Clapton always had something goin' on, Animals were still groovin', of course the Stones are still performing, and Pink Floyd left many of 'em in the dust! Deep Purple was the band to try to copy. Then Disco tried to (mess) everything up. But, outta New York & London, descendants of Marc Bolan, Lou Reed, & David Bowie, came the Ramones & the Sex Pistols! Man, what a crazy ride its been! I think I saw most all of 'em at least once. As Jim Carrol said, "They were all good friends of mine and they died died." (Not all the ones I stated above, but many others they tried and they died died!)
Oh, yeah, sorry...Happy Birthday, Ozzy!
