Lucky Yard Sale Find
My wife found three copies of American Rifleman for me today at a yard sale! May 1943, December 1947, and January 1949! Really looking forward to reading them! Apologies for the orientation- if someone wants to correct it feel free.

My dad was a Life member of the NRA, he had copies of the Rifleman going back to the late 40's. I enjoyed looking through them when I was a kid. They all got tossed out when he moved in the 80's.

The gun ads from Kleins and other wholesale gun houses will make you cry.

Same here for me. I remember seeing the third magazine. I read through them constantly.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. Did you notice there is no advertising on the covers?

My google-fu can't find any actual pics of either one. A number of pics of that cover came up but no info on the image.

Maybe you will find a good article on the virtues of 9mm versus 45ACP?

20 years ago Phoenix main library had American Riflemen's in notebook binders going back to 1937. I spent many Sundays pouring over the end of year index's for technical research.

Over the years, I have managed to build complete files of the Rifleman going back to 1928. (No, I am old, but not quite that old.) Every few years, I will dig out a bunch and reread them. The most interesting Arms Chest, the classified ads, is from the thirties and forties. I have about a ton of old magazines, in spite of weeding them out from time to time..complete file of Gun Report, and nearly complete files of Handloader and Rifle, complete file of Double Gun Journal, and Gun Digest.

Maybe 10 or so years ago, I found four ARs from the WWII period in a Del Rio TX antique shop for a dollar each, and I bought them. Only problem is I don't know where they are today, probably buried somewhere in my garage. I also found one containing the same Klein's ad that Oswald ordered his Carcano from. I suppose that digital copies of all of them exist on some website somewhere. I know that all of the "Guns" magazines have been digitized, from the mid-50s forward. Aside from the AR, "Guns" was the first of the general circulation gunmags. No idea if it is still published or not.

Sorry for the delay- I see some have questioned who's on the cover of the January 1949 issue. According to page 6, it's Master woodcarver Frank Ferg of Merchantville, New Jersey.
