Any flag buffs out there
While cleaning up my parents garage I came across an older US flag that the material felt different. So I put it in my save pile to look at later. When I opened it up the pattern of stars looked odd.
All the rows were even, six rows of eight, 48 stars!
There is a makers tag sewn in but no date.
So with Alaska and Hawaii coming in as states in 1959, it’s an old Old Glory!
Any ideas on how old it is? I know it’s at least 62 years old, but seeing if anyone recognizes the label.

The 48th state came in the union in 1912. So that flag was current from 1912 until 1959. But my guess is that flag is after WWII. Which size is it?

Annin Flagmakers are still in business. You might try contacting them. They may be able to date the flag from the labels.

34” h x58”w
Was it customary for the Army in WWII, to give a flag to the family of soldier killed in action? My Dad’s older brother was killed in action on Okinawa.
The flag has been repaired in several places along the edges. So it was probably wider originally.

Military coffin flags are usually ~5' x 9' so the flag covers the coffin lid and drapes down the four sides about 1'.
Yours is smaller than that, but it's a really nice flag from a time when the flag's cloth had some body to it, and was all sewn, not the printed, near see-thru things so common today. Fly it on special days!

I have a 3'x5' 48-start flag with a label that says "Dettras Flag Products" and "Bulldog Bunting 2 ply warp." Classic flags when flags were made with real material.

December 7th is coming up. Would be a nice touch to fly that in honor of the day.

Take it to your local VFW Post - they might have somebody there that can help you out. Also, buy your flags from them.

48 Star Flags are still being made
Google "buy 48 star american flag"
48 Star Flags are still being made
I did not check for 49 star flags.
Some people want and buy the vintage 48 start flag.
IF you want to talk about "outdated" flag sales think Confederate.

Spending a little time with our friend Google. The 48 star “Defiance” style flag was 3x5 and offered thru Annin between the end of WWII and when the 49th state joined in 1959.
