Over used word rant
Listening to the morning shows today ( why I listen I don't know), reminded of a thread on another forum of inappropriately over used words. Some I heard already this morning.
-Hero
-Expert
-Miracle
-Everyone
Just an old guy complaining. !!!

My all-time fav -- "literally", usually used to mean exactly the opposite of what it means...

When someone mentions a product to me as "tactical" I always ask for the tactics involved in using it...I haven't gotten a satisfactory answer yet, but it's a good tactic for shutting up a blowhard... ...Ben

The most over used word to me and that has lost it's original meaning is the word Hero. Today if you get out of bed in the morning you are a hero. When I was a kid there were very few folks that the word hero fit. Now everyone is a hero.

I will have to say I’ve been Strategic and I’ve been Tactical,
And Tactical is more fun!

AS WELL. Never too, also, in addition, additionally, besides, furthermore, moreover, to boot, in addition to, along with, plus or not to mention.
Seems all the "young" reporters see how many times they can say as well in one day.

Unless it's "penultimate," which, I've just learned, does not mean what I (and I suspect most people) always thought it did.

Some good ones mentioned already. Keeping with the spirit of the original post, here are a few more single words: thingy, comfy, pard, newby, benjamins, survivor, doable, issue, closure, mothership, unobtanium, glommed, upgrade, icon, iconic.
If you get into phrases, that really opens up some territory.

Using the word like multiple times in a sentence sounds dumb and is extremely annoying. "Like, my car wouldn't start and I was like, I don't know how to open the hood or check the battery, so I was like, I'll just call my dad and see if he can like, come here and help me."

I will give a second on "closure" but the overuse and poorly understood "hero" may be the winner.

Well, at the end of the day, when all is said and done, in the interest of being fair, notwithstanding other opinions to the contrary and with all due respect, I can find more important things to get pissed off about.

"Y'know." The great thing about the word "y'know," is that, well, y'know, you can insert it, y'know, in just about any place in a sentence and, well...y'know, it seems to fit. And...okay...well, y'know, "okay" is another word that seems to just pop up anywhere. I mean...uh, okay, well, y'know, when you can't think of anything to say...uh, okay...you can just say "okay" and y'know, it just takes care of everything. Okay?

It drives me up the wall when the media coins a new word or finds some arcane synonym in their Roget's Thesaurus and then uses it ad nauseum.
Here are some examples:
woke - especially
unpack
racist
weaponize
conflate
foment
panned
apoplectic
existential
Or when youngsters call me dude or boss.

"Ya know" is a place holder. Folks use it when they haven't formed the next appropriate word instead of "umm" which signals that the floor is still theirs.
Ruthie does this (bless her heart). She can't go seven words without a "ya know". I have pointed it out to her in the past (like I did with her hand talking) but have long since given up as I don't like sleeping on the fire escape.

Reminds Me of 25 years or so ago when the word Solon was discovered. Reporters all over the Country couldn't write a political story without the word. For My pet peve it is the phrase " that being said," or " having said that ". The most useless phrase in the annals of American writing.

"Everything happens for a reason" = duh, really
Both are just word vomit

'Like'
The word 'like'is used by the young folks of our society, to proceed and follow nearly everything that they say.

These statements require being from the south to get. Still highly annoying and usually repeated over and over and over by the same person using them in every sentence that comes out of there mouth.
"...and all like that!"
"let me tell you somt'n"
And you thought cussing made you sound stupid? lol

Ranting is something I do because, I'm not allowed to go on an all-out rampage!
When my oldest son was having social difficulty with the School Board, I offered to step into the situation, he declined. He didn't think the survivors would not press charges. I didn't that as a problem, there would noy be any survivors!
Rants, these days, are common and mostly meaningless. Local society seldom encounters an actual rampage! They really need to understand the difference, so they will know that they need to do anything to avoid a real and true RAMPAGE!
