Tonga Blast
Massive volcanic blast near Tonga, maybe a third of the way from New Zealand to Hawaii sent a barometric blip recorded around the world and waves to Laguna Beach.
Wondering if Kiwi Cop's ears have stopped ringing?

The then King of Tonga came to Guam to visit when I was in the Air force there, somewhere between 1976-78. One big dude, in every dimension.

"Tonga Blast"? At first, I thought you were going to tell us about a new tropical fruit drink for colonoscopy prep.

I was on my way to the cove (which is literally a stone's throw from the ocean at high tide) to read, when I got a call from my wife, telling me to stay away from the water. It turned out to be a non-event, at least here.

Concerned, I texted my son this morning, as he likes to surf the beaches near San Francisco. He said he was on the beach when park rangers cleared it. Drove home in his wetsuit.
Re the king of Tonga, business associates told me that when he visited Tokyo back in the mid '90s, there was a guy who followed him with a chair so that he could sit down every dozen steps or so. (He also told me that the Tongan minister of Agriculture, who was part of the entourage, spent time in Tokyo supermarkets arranging Tongan melons to the best advantage.)
Knew another guy who took the (or a) Tongan princess to dinner in Paris, probably during the airshow. (She was the Tongan minister for Telecommunications at the time.) Said she went through two large steaks at dinner.
