Default Craig Spegel grips

Have any of you folks bought an grips from Craig personally lately? I know he has a couple of year working list. As a result of "old timer's", my memory is failing me. I seem to remember calling him about a couple of years ago, and putting my name on his list, but I am not sure. I am thinking when your name comes up, he will call and ask what you want. I am not even sure if this is how it works.

If it doesn't work this way, and instead, you call him, place an order, and it takes him at least 2 years to get to it, I know I didn't do that.

Do any of you know how it works? I know I could call him, but don't want to keep him from his work, if I can get the answer here. While we are at it, show us some pictures of your favorite Spegel grips! Thanks.
Larry

........" I am thinking when your name comes up, he will call and ask what you want."

From what I know that's how it works.

Craig's backlog has grown due to his move (relocation) from Oregon to Idaho, and I know he's been making grips again for the past couple months.

I seem to remember someone posting here recently that he called them and advised that they will be getting their order soon.

Default As for pics.....

Here you go....

Cocobolo Boot plus grips (w/medallions) on a M520.

Cocololo Targets (w/medallions) on a M57.

Mecassar Ebony Targets (w/medalions) on a M27

Cocobolo checkered Boot Plus on a M25-9

A couple Bolivian Rosewood Boot Plus's on a couple PC L-Frames

Cocobolo smooth Targets on a M14-6

Cocobolo checkered Boot's on a pair of PC M13's

The top gun is a M14-6 wearing a very special pair of American Walnut grips that Craig makes every 1000 pair....

Note the M25-9, the special American Walnut grips above and the pair of M13's have grips with his normal speed loader cut, all the others above have a speed loader cut that we call the "58 Speed loader" cut, it's patterned after a pair of S&W Target grips that adorn a Model 14 (made in 1958) in my collection (see below). Craig's normal speed loader cut if more aggressive, if you are using a speed loader it has more room for rapid reloads, the 58 style is less aggressive but allows the install of a medallion that is higher up (closer to the original position of S&W's grip medallions...)

Maybe why it takes so long is because SmithNut is on the list……. a lot. 😁 He sure has some nice ones.
My only Spegel stocks, had done a few years ago on my 649.

I spoke to him a couple months ago and he said revolver grips have a 3 year wait.

If your name is on list he will call you and get your order and you send in payment. Then grips arrive shortly after.

As noted above his move pushed him out further.

Back in 2013 I ordered some extended boot grips from Craig Spegel.
I had a choice of Granadillo or S. Bolivian Rosewood.

I guess I was lucky because back then the wait was only 5 months.

The invoice from Craig didn't say which wood it was, so I always wondered.

I sent him a letter in October 2020 asking if he had the answer in his files.

I got a response from him in November 2021 telling me that the wood
is South Bolivian Rosewood.

Apparently the letter was lost during his move. He moved from Oregon
to Idaho. So it was a little tardy getting to me. But I forgive him, it's
better late than never.

Here are the boots on my Colt's Agent.

I've dealt with Craig Spegel several times over the years. He's ethical, honest, and fair, and he does superb work...if every business was like his, we'd have a lot better world.

I waited for two years for a pair of Cocobolo grips for one of my Browning High Powers. They arrived last summer, and they're just beautiful. I called him as soon as they arrived to get another pair, but he follows the list...so I'm waiting again. He'll call when he's ready to make them, as he always does...and when they arrive, the wait will have been worth it.

SmithNut, you do have a nice Spegel collection! What can you tell us about the special pair of American Walnut grips? When my name comes up, can I order more than one pair of grips? Also, what are your favorites and why? I know he is known for his boot grips, but with the long wait, I don't want to miss the opportunity to get what he does best!

I have ordered more than one pair at a time from him so pretty sure that will be okay.

I know he makes things in lots, like now I am waiting on some Browning Hi Power grips, well waiting for my name to come up on the list. From my conversation with him he said he should be doing a batch of those sometime early this year. Just not sure if I will make that cut or the next one somewhere down the road.

I have been lucky in finding most of mine in the secondary market before the price gouging began.

Wink

I have one beautiful set from Craig for my Hi Power. S+ cocobolo
I have been on his revolver list for almost 3 years. I called him a few months ago because I was wondering if I had missed his call.
He was very pleasant to talk to and just told me that the move pushed everything back a year.
I am just trying to patiently wait!

I lived in Oregon 12 years. Most of my friends there have moved to Idaho. The gun climate in Oregon changed when a lot of Californians moved there

The American Walnut grips are pretty special, as I mentioned he makes a pair (or did) every 1000 grips, so you'd have to ask him on timing, etc. He decides who he offers them to, and I was fortunate to get a pair, that's been about a dozen years back.
As for favorites, I like all of his grip styles, I prefer the Target style on longer barreled Target guns (but I use them on 4" Target models as well). His Target grips "look" like S&W's Targets but are much slimmer in profile than the factory versions, they are more comfortable to me than the larger ones.
Here's a couple pics showing how slender they are compared to the factory's.

Spegels vrs. Factory Targets

Here's another look at three revolvers with Spegel targets...
On the left, Targets with "short" extension on a 4" K frame.
Middle, Targets with longer extension on a 6" K frame.
Right, Targets with a little longer extension on a 6" N frame.

He will work with you on the style and length of the extension below the frame on his targets, they are great..... but just take some time to receive them due to this backlog.

Enjoy
