A California environmentalist who moves to Montana in the winter, builds an igloo and then has a house warming party.

Yesterday it hit 50 and it has been warm for a week the piles of snow from plowing my drive way shrunk by 50%. Got up at 4:30 this morning and it was 30, and when I drove the girls to school it was only 17 and the forecast says it will be -4 tonight. Rest of the week supposed to be 30s in the daylight with snow and rain then in teens at night. ICE

Noticed a similar forecast for Red Lodge. Chinook winds, or?

here is the current road condition map

Purple/white is snow and or ice
Blue/white is ice/slush and or frost
Red triangles means high winds also

This is just the start of it

Here is the road out of town from highway camera

It was bare and dry yesterday now scattered ice and blowing snow

Some places did have Chinook winds now it is cold winds

The emp here has dropped from 4"30 at 4:30am to 9 now at 1pm and it will be below zero after midnight.

Looks like the guard rails have posts every 2 or 3 feet, around here normal is 8 to 10 feet! I assume these guard rails get a good work out!

Oh, that was probably back in the "Safe and Prudent" days. When a truck hits a guard rail at 100 mph, you need a lot of posts!!!!

Got to 41 here last night. Up to 65 today. The rest of the week will be in the mid 70's during the day and upper 40's at night.

It rained in Vegas this morning. I missed the fun on the roads thanks to waiting on IT helper callbacks that never came. "It's an ill wind..." applies.

Those photos look like some ugly winter roads! That looks like a nice shiny layer of black ice! I've been enjoying the mild temps but I worry about not getting any cold temps and snow. No extended cold temps and good snowfall, we'll be having alot of bugs and wildfires. We've been relatively lucky with wildfires in this area that I live but how long can the luck hold? Speaking of snow in my yard, we have clear ice and we have white ice. Walking outside is very risky.

Now it is coated with black ice. Temp is up to 4 from a minus 4 last night. High today supposed to be 14. Tomorrow and Fri it is supposed to get high 30s with light rain then freeze at night and continue that for over the weekend then not get above freezing till latter next week. Either drive on ice or stay in your house.

School buses pick kids up and deliver them on this road morning and night. Dark when the pick up. Lots of young kids with no license drive a car to the highway and wait in it for bus, leave car and drive it back home when bus drops them off at night. You see them parked on side roads and everyone knows they are "school cars"

No, 6 legged cockroaches, no 4 legged hogs or rats and except for the towns over 6 towns over 30,000 very few of the 2 leg variety.

about the only invasive species we have are pheasants.

From Oct to April no snakes either.

Looks like here. Monday had a high of 53. Tuesday it was in the 30's. This AM it was 0 and right now it is +1. Of course 25 MPH winds help. Cold all week from now.

I love my state of Michigan and its seasons. Being retired since 2009, if the weather gets too cold and snowy, I stay inside. What a concept eh?
I actually used to enjoy road patrol in bad snowstorms. Certain types of drivers would always make it interesting. I remember one ice storm on a Saturday morning where they were telling people to not go out unless it was an emergency. I responded to a one car accident and found that the car had slide off the road and down into a ditch. The driver was some 35ish year old fellow who had on a jogging suit and was doing a little dance as he was obviously freezing. I asked him what happened and where he was heading, and he told me he was going to go jogging when his car slid off the road. I bit my tongue and I offered to let him sit in my patrol car while I did the report and waited for the tow truck, but he declined.
Next time I looked up, I noticed that Mr Natural had slipped on the ice and just fallen on his butt.
Sometimes I miss my job.

Headed E over Divide?

We had 47 F Monday then cooled to 12 and snowed. The wind has slowed and the fishing is still good. Don't trust water that you can't stand on.

The divide over the Judith mountains to the east, the last mountains due west of here, till you get way the other side of the Mississippi.
Just to the south of the Judith are the Little Snowies, south and slightly east of the those are the Bulls, west of the Little Snowies are the Big Snowies, west of those across the Judith gap are the Little Belts and north of those are the Highwoods then coming back east there are the Moccasins and then you are back to the Judiths this ring of small mountains forms the Judith basin. Everything drains out of here into the Judith river and it dumps into the Missouri.

The grandfather I hung out with as a kid and feed cows with always gave directions by peaks, divides and drainages. He grew up traveling with horses and very few actual roads.

Most of the homeless in Montana are in Missoula in the summertime. Not many winter over, but go south to warmer areas on Hwy 93 which has been called the "bums highway". A few hardy souls do though. I remember when I was a kid a couple of dugouts where what were then called bums would reside in winter. Some were fairly far out in the country. Roofed over holes in the ground or in a dirt bank with some type of chimney sticking out. I imagine some of them could have done well on the show "Alone"

It was 42 yesterday and today it only made to 18. Tomorrow the high is slated to be 9 above. The wind is also going to be higher so the wind chills will be fun.

-18 f (without wind chill) this morn, and there are no homeless to be seen. Also no groups of misguided youngunz hanging on street corners.

The best thing about colder weather is increase in traction over wet slippery snow/ice.

I hunted turkey E of Lewistown around Divide 20+ years ago a couple of times. When I worked I would spend a couple of weeks there a year. Usually come up from Columbus through Rapelje to Harlo, occasionally out through Roundup but more commonly Harlowton to Martinsville, Lenup and Livingston.

The Montana speed limit sign reminded me of a time about Thanksgiving 1996 mid after noon. I and the family were driving east on I 94 just short of the highway 47 exit. Roads were hard pack and ice. I drove up on 2 of Montana's finest, troopers that is. They were running about 50. I followed them for a mile or so and decided I just didn't have time for this. I pulled out and around them, looked in my rear view mirror and the lead trooper must have hit the throttle a little heavy because his car went side ways. Then the lights came on and he's explaining to me he got me at 66 mph. I says yeah and? That will be 70$ He says that's too fast for conditions! I ask did you see any indication that I was slipping or sliding? He says no but my job is to prevent. Mr. all you are preventing is me getting home with all my cash! It didn't go real well after that. My wife and daughter thought I was going to jail. Bottom line they couldn't tolerate a new Cadillac with out of state plates go around them!

Gotta love Montana. Nine months of winter and three months of really lousy sledding. I'd be there now if Good Wife weren't glued to Illinois.

The no speed limit, safe and prudent went by the way side because some guy in a Porsche got a ticket on I 94 east of Billings for going about 120. He took it to court and got it dismissed as an ubiquitous law. Next legislator fixed that. I never went much over 150 on that piece of road myself.
