One Saturday morning, early 1970s, NYC, after a night of carousing, my brother and I were in a laundromat to do our week's laundry. We bought detergent packages from the vending machine.
Neither of us had a pocket knife.
I got mine open okay, but my brother had difficulty. Finally, in frustration, he dropped the packet to the floor and proceeded to stamp on it with his feet. It opened up, and he dumped it in his machine.
Could have used a pocket knife...

I have been carrying this magical multi-tool for 5 decades. It's a true bacon saver.

I EDC a SAK Tinker except on Jury duty!
But once you have a reputation for carrying a knife, everybody at school, later at work and later at church wants to borrow your knife.
While knives are a good way to meet other guys, That doesn't seem to be true about pretty women! (and why meet the other kind?)

I suggest that none of you visit the UK with your tools unless you like DNA swabs.

I've carried a pocket knife for over 60 years, always a Case Stag Stockman, even during the folding knife craze from a few years ago. The few times that I was not allowed to carry one was miserable, even when not needed, it's absence is profound.

Australia too. You must have a specific reason to be carrying a knife in a public place. 1st offence is a fine. 2nd offence and it's a trip to court.

Does that include all knives, even the small Swiss Army or Leatherman keychain multi-tools?
How is such a law enforced? Are police in Australia empowered to perform random searches of citizens?

I'm know for keeping my knives "scary sharp."
Does that make me a "Real Man?" Dunno but they sure do work better that way.

Pocket knife, handkerchief and comb. The three symbols of a man.
I was probably 12 when I got my first pocket knife and have carried it daily for 60 years.
With the following exceptions:
* bathing suit
* TSA line

Yes, SAK's and Leathermans included. Unless you have a reasonable excuse i.E. you're tradesman. Can even include scissors - like the ones Junkies and Stoners may carry. The law was instituted due to a high number of armed street robberies. It was designed to target street gangs etc. The Stop, Search, and Detain powers can only be used when there is "reasonable cause to suspect".
The reasonable excuses include:-
(i) the lawful pursuit of the person’s occupation, education or training,
(ii) the preparation or consumption of food or drink,
(iii) participation in a lawful entertainment, recreation or sport,
(iv) the exhibition of knives for retail or other trade purposes,
(v) an organised exhibition by knife collectors,
(vi) the wearing of an official uniform,
(vii) genuine religious purposes,
Self defence is definitely not a reasonable excuse.

That is not why a gentleman carries a handkerchief. A gentleman carries a handkerchief in order to offer it to a lady having an emotional event.

Once a pocket knife may well have saved my dumb butt. I was in my 20s and it was a nice early spring day,. I took my bike for a ride and when I got to a small local lake I started riding on the ice along the edge seeing how well I could do. There was a long wide spot across one end that was tempting. Finally, I took off across it pedaling faster as I went. But, avoiding spinning, but try to go faster than the ice was cracking. It was cracking faster and faster. Then plunk, in I went. Tossed bike on top of ice and started breaking my way toward shore. Then ice quit breaking and it was still over belly deep. Then when I flopped up on ice it bowed down and got wet and very slick. Could not slide out. Out came my knife. Flopped up as far as I could, stabbed in my knife and used it to pull myself farther onto ice, repeating until I could crawl. I don't think it would have been good if I had not been able to get my dumb butt out.
It might not necessarily be that we get smarter as we get older. It could be we just run out of stupid stuff to try.

I was working in a steel yard when a co-worker made a comment. "How come when you need a knife for something, no one's got one. But once someone gets mad, everybody's got one?"

Or to wipe the sweat off his brow or dry his hands after washing. (Used in this fashion, however, the ladies are on their own.)

My “pocket knife” for the last 15 years or so. It’s a trusted friend and is always with me when the law allows. 😁 it looks a little worn but still gets the job done.

I carried a Leatherman Micra for 32 years in my right front pocket, until I retired. It came in handy while doing field work. It now resides on the top of my dresser.

Camp knives are my pocket knife of choice, most times a G.I. Stainless knife, often photographed with my pistol of the day:
With Ruger Standard Stainless .22 pistols, 4" and 6":
With Colt Cobra 2":
Sometimes a Remington Bullet "Trailhand" camp knife, with Colt Diamondback .22:

I haven't been without a pocket knife in my pocket since kindergarten, except when flying. Then it's in my check bag so I can get it soon as I land. A sharp knife is safer than a dull knife. Keep it sharp.
My wife came to me upset as she somehow lost the little Swiss Army knife she carries and I had to immediately order her another one. She had a business as an Decorator and she used her knife numerous times. My Daughter also has one AI gave her and my son carries one of several he has.
I actually carry two, the little Swiss, with the toothpick and the nail file (which I modified to fit most adjustable sights), and a Kershaw leek that I have carried since 06.

Because My Mommy will not let me play with sharp objects, run with scissors or play in traffic.
If I had a "Real Man's Card" i would turn it in.

I always have a Buck-lite knife on around the place, usually a Swiss Army Huntsman or /Tinker if Im traveling. But I dont always carry a knife when I go out at home. Well unless you count this one, and it has been used more than a few times.

I've had a pocket knife since I was 10 or 11. I carry a Schrade 3 blade now. Once dressed my buck out with it.

P38 anyone who has served may have more than few. I know my deceased father in law was as happy as a clam when I gave him one of mine. First knife I've ever carried was a Buck 110 in the leather sheath. Still have it. Them the next one was a buck Gator, still have that one. Went back to the Buck 110 for a bunch of years. Then a Benchmade Griptilian. Probably had more than that but these are the ones I remember, Most of the time I was inside deepest darkest NYC, Try that today. Frank

I started carrying a pocket knife early in Grade School (probably 2nd or 3rd grade) as was common back then. I NEVER thought of a pocket knife as a weapon back then and on certain occasions I carried my Boy Scout knife on a belt clip when wearing the BSA uniform to school for a special occasion once a year. No one even commented back then.
I can not ever remember being without a pocket knife since that time. When I travel I will always pack one in my checked bag for carry when I arrive. Other than on a plane I can't remember ever being without one. And a sharp one at that!

My dad sold knives at his store, so I pretty much had one from about 4 years old on. Of course, all us boys, and most girls, had knives all through school. Back then, schools were still semi-sane, but IMHO, they were already being run by lunatics.
I never hurt myself with any of my knives, my mom was worried about it until I was about 9 or so. I've been carrying the same Shrade LB7 for over 40 years. It's battle scarred and the blade has a tiny bit of wobble, but it still does the job. I have a friend who has never ever carried a knife, and that pretty much amazes me. I use mine about once a week when I'm outside of home, and it seems like he's making life hard for no reason, a small pocket knife is pretty much unable to be noticable when in a pocket.
I still want to know about the scissors thing!

Usually small scissors like for cutting your finger nails. They use them for cutting up their weed. They also knew they couldn't carry a knife around anymore, so thought small scissors would make a good stabbing implement in a pinch; like a punch dagger. Hide them in their Bum Bags with their spoon, lighter, government funded needle exchange syringe and sharps container. This was in and around Inner City Sydney in the late 1990's early 2000's. In those days, heroin was sold in small colored water balloons. (Different weights in different colored balloons). You'd need something to cut them open when going for a hit.
I've been out of the Cops for a few years now, but I believe most Street/gang stabbing are simply with kitchen type knives. Cheap.......even cheaper when you steal them from the local supermarket.

My gramma was a true Appalachian who gave birth to 8 kids who all worked on the farm. Like all true Appalachian women from that era, she was the queen of breakfast.
Anyway, my mom told me that my gramma used to tell her sons that, “Any man who doesn’t carry a knife in his pocket probably wonders how he’d look in my weddin’ dress.”

Always this type of set up in my pockets. I have given countless pocketknives as gift to brothers and friends who use to borrow mine, but now have there own.

I've recently began carrying my Buck 303 the MBH bought me. Didn't cost her much, but it's priceless to me.
Have a blessed day,
Leon

A knife experience. I was in a Kmart long ago and noticed an Old Timer fixed blade I would like to have in the case by gun counter. Said I would take it. The clerk insisted that he carry the knife to the front of the store and gave it to me as I left. Curious I put it in my truck went back inside to the kitchen stuff, selected the biggest knife they had and proceeded to walk all over the store with it, Nobody paid any attention.
That is how much sense most weapon policies have
My mother in law thinks permitless carry is a terrible idea. "We don't need just anyone walking around with a gun" She doesn't want to hear that under the permit less carry law no one who is prohibited from having a gun can do so. Or the fact that under the old law anyone who was not prohibited would have to be issued one if they applied. This woman is smart enough to know criminals often carry guns illegally too. When she found out that it was now legal to carry in the court house, just not the court room she really lost it. "What to stop some one from going in and shooting the judge or the defendant" The real answer of "The same thing that prevented someone with or without a permit from sticking a gun in their pocket, walking into the court room and shooting the judge or defendant for the last 100 plus years unless we install metal detectors somewhere" was not a valid argument to her.
Why she thinks going down, paying $50 and applying for a permit the sheriff must grant you if you have no offenses make you safer to carry is beyond me. Even most proficiency tests can bee passed by anyone with an IQ over 80 that is not totally spastic. Same thing with the idea that weapons being prohibited in the courthouse will stop someone from committing murder there. That is like thinking armed robbers wouldn't park illegally while they robbed the bank.
This same woman has and carries a gun in her vehicle because she believe she knows how to handle it. I assure you she does not leave it in her truck and does not open carry it to and from her apartment. But, that is somehow different.
I can't wait to tell her switch blades are now 100% legal to carry in Montana. LMAO

I carry two pocket knives. The first is a Spyderco Delica with a serrated blade that I have carried since 1994. The other is a three bladed, Gerber Stockman. Each has it's particular tasks that it is best suited for.

My dad never left the house without his scout-style knife in his hip pocket with a lanyard snapped to a belt loop. That and his Colt Woodsman and a match safe.
I have carried a pocket knife every day most of my life. In basic training, we were told to ship all our civilian stuff back home. I kept my Case trapper through my entire tour.
Today I carry a Leatherman Juice and a Deejo folder that my son gave me.
