Approximately 3 years ago a local (VA) to me FFL provided me a copy of theirs so I could send it to a private individual to ship a handgun I purchased.
I included it with my payment.
Unfortunately many FFL holders around where I am won't receive from private individuals any longer.

It depends on the seller. Some are happy with emailed copies and some demand a piece of paper in the mail.

As a receiving FFL for online purchases, I haven't had to send a hard copy in years. My info is already available on most online sites like Gunbroker, Buds, Primary Arms, PSA, Guns(dot)com, so I don't have to do anything.

Hard copy, FAX or Email copy are all acceptible as far as the FFL regs go.
Email is the most commonly used I'd guess as it can get the transaction moving very quickly along with E-money transactions.
You still as the FFL end up with a 'hard copy' of the the other guys license for your records with a touch of the 'Print' button on the computer.
The 'Electronic Signiture' on the emailed or FAXed copy is accepted as well.
Still some FFL's stand firm and demand a copy in the mail with an inked signiture.
Their business, their playground, their rules.

You can access the ATFs site and check the receiving dealers status if you have his number. The guy I used accepted it.

FFL 1 sends me one for the asking.
FFL 2 has it posted on his website.

A few years back I bought a gun from a guy in Denver. His FFL wanted the receiving ffl to just email the license to them. I told this to the ffl I was using and he told me he always just printed one off and sent it by mail. I asked why he didn't just email it, he told me he didn't know how. I asked if I could show him how to do it. He said ok and we emailed it. He thanked me and charged me half his regular fee for transfer.

The FFL I use has it on their website. I keep a downloaded copy and email it as soon as the out of state source asks. So far the remote dealers/auction houses seem thrilled that I'm on the case so quickly.
