National Nurses Week
Today is the last day of NNW. If you know any nurses please let them how much they are appreciated. They will be glad you did.
They are the NCOs of the medical world.
Yes, I am biased.

The nurses do most of the work and Dr's get the credit and the big paychecks. So like Rusty said thank a nurse(not just this week but always)

Anyone who's done time in a hospital has to love nurses. The 3 main ones who helped save my life are Calvin, Mo, and Krysty. Love them still.

I've been blessed thus far in my life with little need of medical care. But when it has been required, the nurses were just who were needed(on the human level) in unpleasant, depressing circumstances. There may have been an exception, but it was clear to me that that was very rare.
Nurses get a big shout out from me.
Regards,
Andy

Daughter #1, a certified wound ostomy nurse, is in the process of leaving IL and joining us in TN. Starts her new gig Monday. We are very happy.

My wife might say that about me, but we've only been married 30 years.
Thanks for all the kind comments about Nurses. I've been retired now for three years, but I was a Registered Nurse for 37 years. I worked as a medications tech/EMT in the infirmary of a medium security prison at night while putting myself through Nursing School, then started out in a maximum security prison hospital, then went to a neurosurgical pre-postop floor of a Level 1 trauma center. I did a 6-month internship for O.R. training, and spent almost all the rest of my career as a Surgical Nurse. I joined the USAF Reserve and became a Flight Nurse, did that for 8 years while still working O.R.. I also have some Intensive Care and E.R. experience, gained while in the Reserves, and my O.R. experience includes a couple years of Open Heart Surgery, plus many years of Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Surgery, as a service coordinator, RN 1st Assistant and Circulator. I saw active duty military service during Operation Just Cause, Operation Desert Shield, and Operation Desert Storm.
In all those years, I couldn't count the number of patients I had, But there were some very memorable ones. I'm proud (can't you tell? ) of my career and of what I hope benefitted those I cared for.
Yes, we kept the gears greased and everything smoothly running, and although we as Nurses would be officers in the military, saying we were the NCO's of the medical world is high praise.
Late edit: I just re-read Rusty's comment about being biased. Were you a RN also? Thanks for your service, if so.

Sir,
Rusty's beloved wife Ruthie is a nurse; therein lies the source of his bias.

Rusty, Please wish your wife the best of careers. Mine is over, and parts of it I will not miss; the patients and my co-workers, however, will remain in my heart forever.

As stated above many times Nurses do not get the credit for saving a life or providing the compassionate care for terminally ill.
Nurses really appreciate recognition from our patients and their families for the care we provide, especially the "Thank you for taking care me... or of my ....."
Marty Daily, RN
Sorry forgot to post a photo of my office with my original post.
I am retired at this time.

We made a deal long ago that we would not discuss how her shift went until after dinner. I made the mistake once of asking her that as we sat down and I never finished the meal. I'm getting better at it.

When I had my stroke 10 years ago, one of the nurses got the joyous job of washing my butt. I ask her if that's what she thought she'd be doing after all that schooling? She replied that is was just part of the job. I basically exploded, it may be just part of the job, but I can't take care of myself and you are a life saver!

44 years ago today, a tall, smart, good-looking brunette, took all my worldly possessions and gave me hers. She promised to Love, Keep, and Hold me until it killed me! I should have changed her first name to Up. Because the truth is: I married UP!

I support nurses without question. Tough job and has many hard realities associated with it and I will leave it at that. My undergrad was at a University primarily focused on nursing. I was grateful to get a "C" to "B" in these classes because I had no clue in the gen eds. I always joked with the gals and some guys that it was all Greek and Latin to me. Still finished with a 3.83 GPA then went on to Notre Dame and other schools.

I have no idea how many operations and hospitalizations I have endured but it would be a substantial figure. Without even one exception every nurse I EVER had that I can remember was an angel from Heaven above. In every instance they showed compassion and patience. A few stand out in my memory, and not just the pretty ones.
It is a noble profession and it's a shame that these unsung heroes are not fully appreciated or rewarded. I hold all nurses high in my esteem and appreciation for being the people they are.
Please give Ruthie an appreciative "thank you" from me.
And I agree with you...you ARE blessed. So Thank you to her and congratulations to you.

My wife and I both work(ed) in the healthcare field; she is a Radiologic Technologist and a Registered Cardiac Interventional Specialist. She works in a cardiac cath lab, and has taught X-Ray Technology at the community college level (she has a Masters of Science in Public Health). When she and I talked shop, it sounded like reading a medical dictionary. Now that I'm retired, the conversation gets a bit one-sided.
It's surprising how fast some things disappear, that we thought and used every day. I still have all the mechanical skill knowledge (anatomy, tying suture, IV's, etc. but the drugs knowledge is going away, partly because they change so fast. And if I had to, I don't think I could do computer charting anymore (and I don't have to! )

This is her current battle garb. She says it makes a 12 hour shift feel even longer.

On my last visit to my dad he was in the hospital, and he felt he was dying. I watched the night nurse as she was holding Pop's hand and talking to him to convince him that he wasn't dying. I'm convinced she pulled him through the night and that kept him alive for another 3 days. I wish I could have told her how much that meant.

My dear, lovely, late lady friend, Julie, was a nurse. She did 30 plus years, 22 in the US Army as a MASH nurse. She retired as a Colonel. God I miss her.

My oldest sister and BIL are both retired nurses. They've worked in more than one San Antonio hospital. Sister did a lot of time in the critical care units. Her last (video) visit with her son (the nurse on duty set it up for her so she could see what all he was hooked up to) was enough to show her he wasn't gonna make it. The nurse in her saw a 43 year old male patient that was dying. The mother in her kicked in later. Wife's sister and cousin are both nursing supervisors. In my hospital vacations I only had one bad nurse...an older lady that needed to retire. The rest are angels with hidden wings. Guys too. I'm not gender specific when it comes to bringing me my meds, etc. One girl looked like she got into the Goth music, but was very intelligent talking to her, so I never pre-judge anyone who has more training in his/her field than I ever had.
Anyone married to a nurse or has one for a child or grandchild, give them a kiss for those of us who depended on them.

I have always been pleased with the care, service and professionalism of the nurses including those I am related to. They do a much needed service without the flash but can be depended on.

My aunt who lives 4 blocks from me is a retired nurse. She went far beyond her regular duties. When all of us were living down in Maryland, she spent her own time going around to high school football games and acted as a volunteer athletic trainer. She became responsible for setting up an athletic trainer program throughout the county schools. As a result, my uncle and I had the pleasure of seeing her inducted into the county Sports Hall of Fame.

My Julie, had me crying when she told me this. She spent some hours holding the hand of a GI who was run over by an Abrams tank. She talked to him and kept him calm as he died. Angels on Earth.
