Default Good news-bad news-VW scout

The good news is that VW has acquired the rights to the IH Scout name and is going to build them here in the US.

The bad news? They're going to be electric.

I had a scout and it was a fun ride. Took the doors and cab off in the summer.

I had talked myself into buying a diesel IH scout when they quit making
them without warning. Electric may not be bad news if it gets any kind
of range between charges.

A friend of mine had the later Scout II in the early to mid 80's His was a Diesel from 1978. He drove all over Mexico and Central America doing missionary work. Fuel availability was never a problem, fuel quality and purity was! He installed a canister fuel filter and HAD to change it every 5 or 6 days od driving because it would be clogged with mud, sticks chicken feathers and corn cobbs!

At the same time I had a 1974 K-5 Blazer, I had tricked out for mud running and off roading. I think he drove through worse just going to work everyday!

I bought a new IH Scout in 1977 and drove it until 1983 when I bought a new Chevrolet Blazer. I always like the looks of the Scout, but the Blazer was easily the better vehicle of the two.

Years ago my neighbor gave me a look in his garage. One was a Camaro he had restored, but the gem was a flat fender jeep he had redone and dropped a small v-8 into. That thing was a gem. I’ve never seen them out and as far as I know they’re still in there. (I want that jeep lol)

Ask him about the Jeep. He may be ready to sell. Wants and needs change over the years.

Had a Scout. Couple in fact. Fater in law had the earlier Scout 4 cyl. It went rverywhere.except past a gas station. My later V-8 I drove to Alaska twice and anywhere else I wanted to go. The 2nd was the one called a Traveller, I think. I liked the first one better. Was going to buy another and they abruptly quit making them. Did buy a Diesel Wabbit and though a brick on wheels...it got tremendous mileage...better than 50MPG. It ran out of air in HIGH country though...8500 ft or more. An electric Scout?? I doubt it

A Scout was my assigned work vehicle in the early 1970's. Hot in summer, cold in winter, rattled year-round but always got me back home.

Ah memories! The gas station I hung out in (62 to 66) gophered for and eventually got paid there had a Scout. It was a 61 or 62 don't remember the exact year, pick up style vechicle. It had small 4 cylinder 3 spd standard and was basically a tin can on wheels.

Owner put a plow on it and a battery jumper box, a few basic tools behind the seats and man did that thing make money.

Was small enough it could get into and out of tight places in our part of the old city. Plowed many a driveway with that thing, hooked up chain and dragged cars at -20F back to the garage so we could get them running. Without a doubt it did yeoman work. I was in good with the owner and many times when I had car trouble I used it for basic transportation when the garage was closed. I has a very good girl friend and she put up with my sometimes rather strange form of transportation!

Buried my brand new 4x4 toy in a mud hole near a ghost town in 82 and started walking. Came across a young kid in a beat to death scout giving his back east mom a tour of the area (she looked terrified lol). Hooked up his pto winch and yanked my truck right out :-D.

I worked for an IH dealership in the 70's though I only worked on farm equipment. Had a friend that welded on their line for mid size trucks. He claimed the only time he got enough weld on the frames was when the line went down.
I see them as too heavy for elec vehicles.

Default The REAL IH-Scout has long been gone and will never return.

Like the Willys Jeep, the ORIGINAL Toyota Land Cruisers and Land Rovers.

These are vehicles from the past and non of the vehicles that bear the names today can hold a candle to these old warhorses.

As far as IH-Scout, It is ONLY a name licensed by VW and nothing more. Anything else will NOT be an IH-Scout or even within a galaxy of closeness to it.

As far as electric vehciels go, they are still golf carts on steriods and are a long way from becoming anything other than an oddity. They'll be perfected, but not in my time.

Getting buried up to the axles would be bad. Getting a 3 ton Jeep unstuck from it would need a magician. "Ya, Joe, get 'er rockin'." Joe

Default Scout

Another vehicle I will never buy.

I am sick and tired of all these manufacturers jumping onto the electric vehicle bandwagon.

Of you don't live in key areas, there is no reliable recharging available, and I'm not spending another $5,000 to have one installed at home.

A hybrid? Possibly.

That just about broke my heart when Chevrolet did that to the Blazer nameplate. I really wish that GM would come out with a true off road SUV that would compete directly with the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco. I am keeping my 2500 Silverado 4x4 for a while but my next vehicle will most likely be a Wrangler or Bronco

Hybrids are totally there. Toyota has been making Priuses for 20 years now.

For me, it depends on what you want from your car. In Japan I live in a small crowded city/town, with many two-way streets so narrow that two cars cannot pass one another without one pulling over. Parking is difficult. Gas is also expensive. It's a town frequented by tourists, so traffic is often stalled.

When I retired and moved here in 2012, I sold my non-hybrid Lexus RX and bought a Prius C.

It gets over 50 MPG and has a range of over 500 miles. Small enough for tight spaces, but you can cram in five adults if need be. It's noisy on the highway, because it is so light, but you can cruise at 70 and above, no problem, for the occasional run up to Tokyo or the airports.

Totally reliable, ten year-old, hybrid car.

In the US I have a bigger, quieter, more powerful, more comfortable car. I don't think I would want the little Prius over there, as I frequently drive on highways, and there's plenty of opportunity to let her rip.

Freightliner just announced a class 8 single or tandem axel truck/tractor
that supposedly has a range of 230 miles/charge. Look for cities to start
requiring these or something equivalent for downtown streets. Buses
will follow.

Cool Scouts honor

I’d like one, but get a hold of me when batteries go
1000 miles on a charge in -30 degree weather in the dead of
winter, and be able to recharge the battery in 15 minutes
after checking on the cattle or driving across the State.

Plus I don’t think our economy is doing to bad if people
can pluck down $70,000 for an Electric Vehicle.

The News disclosed that EVs have a waiting list, and the
new Ford Lightening has thousands on their waiting
list. I’m sure the Chevy Silverado is the same way.

My dad had a 79 butterscotch Travelall. I had a Scout II with 3 on the floor. I miss both of them very much. Until an EV can get 800 miles on a single charge, I'm out. I just have a feeling that VW is going to make it for the um, how shall I say, weaker minded youth of today. I could go for a hybrid gas/electric but, not fully electric.

Something about standing next to the gas tank, smelling the fumes wafting out the filler neck, watching all the other people doing the same, that I would miss too much.

Wait a minute, did I already say that. Hmmm, maybe I have been standing too close to the gas tank.

Bought a new 4 cyl. IH Scout in 1975. It was a great vehicle. My ex took it when we divorced in 1978. The Scout had no problems negotiating the tank trails at Ft. Hood.
