Default Had it with Apple

I have just about had it with Apple but I doubt if they really care. The latest update to software has split screens popping up all the time and unwanted icons at the bottom of the screen and from what I can find there is nothing you as the user can do about it and pictures and call records from my wife’s phone show up on my phone and my stuff on hers. There is nothing on my phone that I care if she sees but it clutters both of our phones.
Any android users have a suggestion for a good android phone and a tablet I would appreciate you sharing with me. The phone I have now is a iPhone 11 that I bought after always using android and I bought it against my better judgment.

My Samsung S8+ is still working fine despite continuous harassment from my wife and daughter to get an iPhone.

Sounds familiar. All my girls have iPhones and think I should too. I've been using a Motorola Moto G Power android for a while now. Does everything I need and it cost $250. I'm not really all that frugal but I refuse to pay upwards of $1K for something that will be lost, broken or 'obsolete' in a couple of years.

Picked my phone because it was on the approved list that could use WiFi calling from my provider.
Grabbed the Samsung Android tablet from Costco.

Sent from my motorola one 5G using Tapatalk

Sounds to me like you and your wife are sharing an iCloud account, with both your phones syncing to it. If you have separate accounts, that shouldn't happen. (Or all iPhone owners would be sharing info with one another, I think.)

Anyway, that's what it sounds like to me.

I'd call Apple and ask for some help. I have found them very responsive.

Good luck.

Yes I believe that is it, I tried to fina a way to turn those features off but what I was able to find you can’t turn it off. My old android phone was a motoX and it was good.

I think you are right about the cloud, I do need to have the phones separated but this latest thing is the biggie.

I switched from Samsung to Motorola Moto G Power because of the cost and the awesome battery life. I charge it up every 10 days. My son stayed with Samsung.

Arlo is dead on. Go to the apple store and sit down with a technician. They will fix it how you want in about 10 seconds. (I am always embarrassed at how quickly they resolve the issues I go in all steamed up about).

Is you talking about IOS 15.5?
Just updated my iPad and iPhone with no problems , at least none yet.
So far I don’t really see anything different.
But it’s early!

The Motorola phones have the reputation of having a better antenna which is why I had my motoX. I spend a good bit of time in a mountainous area where the signal is marginal which was the reason I originally purchased the Motorola. I do think Motorola phones are a lot of phone for the reasonable price. My choice will probably be motorola or Samsung if I can get everything in the iPhone transferred to an android phone. The new Samsung phones have great cameras. Thanks for all your input.

JJ, re your mountainous area, if you are staying in a house there, I have read/heard that there are cell phone boosters that one can install to improve the signal. (Just checked. There's a bunch on Amazon.)

Interesting, useful discussion of cellphone boosters here: Cell Phone Signal Boosters: The Definitive Guide [2022 Edition]

I keep our Apple devices—all 11 of them—fully up to date and have had no issues. My wife and I share my Apple ID for the App Store only, and use separate IDs for everything else.

Take it in to an Apple store if you have one nearby. Otherwise call them. I wouldn't bother with a carrier store as they tend to be clueless about anything other than activation.

I have had wonderful operation from Samsung's. I'm on my third, over the past 15 or so years. Currently a Galaxy J7 Aura. I have traveled to WA and CO no problem with service anywhere. I have never had an update cause me any problems.

Samsung is the go to not only for my smart phones but also TV's and Blue Ray players.

Never had an Apple product, never will.

Yep. No watch, but iPad and iPhone. The wife has an iPhone and MacBook but says she wants to ditch the MacBook, now five or six years old, and move to an iPad. Good news for me because I am at a loss, often, when she asks for help with the MacBook. I know the iPad well, and have not used anything other than the iPad and iPhone since retiring in 2012.

I think Apple is overpriced, but they make a wonderful, reliable product and their tech support is terrific. I figure I'll pay more for the lack of aggravation.

(I have noticed, though, that guys who are into fiddling with computers — also known as being more tech savvy than yours truly — prefer Android devices.)

I've been avoiding as many things as possible that are made in one particular country.
I search before buying and if there's an alternative I usually go with it.
Do you know where your devices are made?

Most are made in "that country"
if you think Iphones are high priced. There is one cell phone that is made in the US.

I had a Motorola X4 that I liked. Then went to a G Power to charge it less often. When I shattered the screen on the G Power I decided I wanted a phone that could do 5G, so I bought a Samsung A71 5G. Didn't like it at first because I was so accustomed to the Motorola features like the chop to turn on the flashlight and the twist to open the camera app. Samsung has their own shortcut for the camera app but nothing for the flashlight. I got used to the Sammy, though, and it's still going strong after two years.

My son loves One Plus phones. He';s on his third one in three years. I don't know if their phones are delicate or if he's just tougher on phones than most people. The wife won't have anything but an iphone. I've had Androids since version 2.2, and I'm not switching to Apple.

Oh, yeah, my Samsung was made in Vietnam.

Agreed- their tech support is really good. I've rarely had to call them (in 30+ years) but when I have, the response time, via Chat or phone call, has been quick.

Take it to your local Apple store or wireless carrier retail store and have one of the teenagers set it up correctly for you.
Should take about 5 minutes and cost you nothing.

Since I switched over to Apple products 12 years ago Ive had zero gadget problems that weren't of my doing or lack of doing.I have had certain things turned on/off after an update, but usually stumble across the fix with a quick google search. Until the quality declines I'm all Apple.Except the watch..I don't wear one.

I think this chart, the bottom one especially, is impressive:

Apple is more profitable than the rest of the smartphone makers put together.

Ten to ~ 18% of the market and 75 ~ 80+% of the profit. Like I said, they cost too much, but they sure know how to make bucks.

I love Apple - not because I use it but because I don't use it. That way I don't have to do tech support for my friends and relatives who use it! Conversations go like this:

Them: My phone doesn't work!
Me: Android?
Them: No, Apple.
Me: Sorry, I don't know a thing about them!

Them: What's wrong with my tablet?
Me: Android or Windows?
Them: Apple.
Me: Sorry, I don't know a thing about them.

Them: My computer is messed up.
Me: What version of Windows are you using?
Them: It's an Apple.
Me: Sorry, I don't know a thing about them.

Of course I'm still on the hook for my friends and relatives with Android/Windows stuff but Windows has come a long way since the days of DOS and I've always found Android pretty easy.

I have Apple because that’s what my wife, who is a senior paralegal likes and has. The law firm she works for is all Apple.
She is the Tech Expert in our family.
Apple products are less likely to be hacked, I have always heard.

I buy made by Google phones.

My family like the folding Samsung ones.

Both Google and Samsung manufacture them in Vietnam.

No Apple of any size shape or form in this house.

Apple less likely to be hacked is a myth.Apple to be more expensive is not a myth especially the branded accessories.

Good security is up to the user.

The operating profit margin of 65-80% by Apple just shows how overpriced their products are relative to other brands.

Best Apple thingamagiggy to hold is AAPL stock.

Use Samsung S10 here. Wife likes her red iPhone.

Personally, 100% agnostic toward operating systems and hardware. Mac, Windows, **IX, Android, iOS all work fine. Limitations constrained by operator knowledge or lack thereof.

To confuse matters further from the 21st Century genius himself:

Pi is coming.
Pi's Starlink satellite network means no Cell towers required. This is how Musk had the Ukraine networks up in hours when they asked for help.

If you haven't seen the SpaceX Falcon booster rockets setting themselves gently down on the same pad they took off from, you should try youtube. I still think it looks impossible.
Bezos is trying to use balloons and a helicopter. Trying to compete in that arena with gear from ACME has burned billions of dollars fast.

If at all interested in Pi, pay the refundable deposit and get a reservation now. They are already heavily backlogged.

I know of Starlink, hundreds (thousands?) of small satellites in low earth orbit to enable internet in areas under or not served by traditional delivery systems. I think at least one member here has subscribed.

But are you saying it will be used in lieu of cell phones? Hmm. If it's fast, as it reportedly is, I suppose one could just use internet phone/video communication applications, like FaceTime, Zoom, etc. Your "pi" means phone internet?

Costwise would be hard to compete with cell phone services, especially 5G, in areas they serve, though, it seems to me.

Found it: Tesla Model Pi smartphone will launch Starlink technology - iNEWS

Interesting stuff.

I’m currently looking at a new phone. We’re heavily invested in Apple. Two phones. Three iPads. And a watch.

The ratings on new Apple phones isn’t good. But after some research Samsung is have their problems too. They all do.

Think I’m sticking with Apple. The user interface is much easier to use.

This is what Apple built the empire on. As IBM found out eventually, anybody can build hardware, and a lot will do it cheaper. Software is a similar game. But it is the UI that builds loyal, to the level of a cult, customers. Tesla is using a similar business model.

Full disclosure I to have drank the Apple juice. iMac, iPad, and phone. Not to the point of crazy as it’s still an iPhone 7. I squeeze that Apple to get as much juice a I can for as long as I can.

A while back I was having a problem with a Garmin MapSet update.
Got kind of a Condescending attitude from the Kansas Garmin guy.
Like this NM Dummy old guy don’t know how to use his computer.
So I allow him to do something I don’t usually allow.
Remotely control my computer.
About an hour later he say, this update won’t install!
Yabol! A few minutes I look at the site and it’s been taken down.
The next day it’s back up.
Down load, install.

I get the humor but your not that far off. Most likely Starlink (Tesla) will be the the carrier/provider and work with any end point device. Not unlike ATT, Verizon, ect.

In the past the cell phone towers provided service in to rural and rugged areas in a much more efficient manner. One tower could cover miles and multiple towns, as opposed to running copper or fiber to hundreds of points over miles and/or mountains.

Cost effective satellite systems are the next generation.

That would be a Yes.
The reason I have an Apple IPhone Vice a Samsung is the operating system.
I much prefer the IOS over the Android.

I have Android, but Google is the worst Corporate offender for collecting ALL personal data and consolidating for their AI monster, the probability machine.

The monster knows more about you than you do and runs about 95% correct in predicting your future behavior.

IMHO, AI applied to Personal Data is the scariest thing we face.
I expect to be arrested for my thoughts at some point if I make it for a few more years.

I have an iPhone, but I wouldn't call myself a rabid fan. I got it because I already had a Mac, it made sense to get something compatible.

My disappointment isn't so much with the iPhone (well, except they took away the headphone jack), but with the Mac. It is becoming a locked down appliance rather than a computer that I control. The handwriting was on the wall a few years back when Apple disbanded the OS X development team and assimilated them into the iOS team. OS X became macOS then.

I like my (overpriced) iPhone, but my wife has an Apple laptop, they simply do not hold u as well as their modern windows competitors.

"I have just about had it with Apple but I doubt if they really care.
The phone I have now is a iPhone 11 that I bought after always using android and I bought it against my better judgment."

Comrade, do you think that you can just leave, Apple?

“Comrade, do you think that you can just leave, Apple?“ good one Rick. My tentative plan is to pass the iPhone that I have to my wife since it will be an update for her and get an android phone for myself. I am an old retired guy and I just don’t want to or need to carry Apple around in my pocket everyday, iPhones have advantages and benefits to those in the business world and workforce but not me.

Just a guess on my part, but I suspect what you prefer is the user interface rather than the OS. The Android OS is far more flexible and app friendly than the Apple OS. This is a double edge sword: Apple has far more control over their devices but it also limits third parties from pushing the envelope with new apps. For every Apple app, there are probably 10 or 20 Android based apps. That's good for choice but bad for consumer confusion, especially among non-tech savvy users.
