Default Need advice on selling an old car

Hello all! My mother is trying to sell my dad‘s old convertible. I’m looking for recommendations as to possible forums or sites that would help her to get it sold.
It’s a 1950 Ford convertible. It’s running and has had quite a bit of restoration work done on it but it’s by no means original.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I use local Craigslist, as the cost is minimal ($5) and local buyers tend to be..happier. Ebay is OK in a pinch,if CL doesn't work....but they charge substantially and they will report your sale to the IRS.

Take it to a local car show and put a for sale sign in the windshield if Craig's list doesn't work.

Hemmings Motor news has a national following, and lists adds for all kinds of cars and parts for older cars. There ust may be someone looking for a 50 Ford Convertible.

Since it has keys, runs and in pretty good shape, all you need is the "Pink slip" to get er sold.

Lots of folks like the "Olies but goodies" cars.

I just sold my old 47 Plymuth last year, to a new home.

Good luck.

George, a 1950 running driving Ford convertible is a desirable probably rare car. To get top dollar do some research and list it in Hemmings and I’ll bet it will sell quickly, price will depend on condition of course. Wouldn’t be a surprise if someone on this forum has interest..

Try bring a trailer . Com

They have lots of older vehicles and it sounds like yours might just fit there. Plus the visibility across the country.

Try ClassicCars.com. Look at comparible cars and see what the asking price is. You probably can get more for it there than Craigs List. Sent You PM.

This.

BAT is bringing prices that are nearly as crazy as GunBroker in the current market, and it seems to draw a very wide audience for many different automotive interests.

Have the car professionally cleaned/detailed, and take LOTS of pictures.

You need to do some serious work on what price to put on it. You don't want to sell it then find out later it was worth 3X the price you got for it. Can you find an honest appraiser near your location? I looked in the current Hemmings magazine and there is no 1950 Ford convertible advertised so no help there. Think about getting a gun you are interested in selling at a gun show and the wild variety of offers you get often pretty low. Good luck!

gfors, Be careful when you are dealing with folks, as with lots of other items worth money there are scammers in the classic car market. If you have a car club near you see if there is a person in the group that will give you an honest appraisal of the car. you maybe able to find a shop that restores classic cars to do it also for a fee. Good luck.

There are several antique auto auctions including Barrett Jackson semi-annually in Scottsdale, Arizona, which is televised. From what I have seen in the past you could realize $30-100,000 depending on condition of the car, and this would be un-restored. There are many very serious collectors representing several well known car museums that attend both events Here is a link to Barrett-Jackson's web site, you should at least give them a call and discuss the car with them! :Barrett-Jackson Auction Company - World's Greatest Collector Car Auctions

Been there done that doing it now.

First of all, you need insurance. I pay $125 / year for mine, while my new car costs ~$1000.

To get the insurance, you should have an appraisal. I get one every 4-5 years and it costs ~$100.

Get the appraisal and then you'll know exactly what its worth in your market.

I doubt Barrett Jackson would be interested, they want completely original or fully restored. The prices you stated will not happen with the car mentioned by the OP.

The venue for selling will depend on the condition of the car. Do you have any pictures?

Thank you everyone, for all your suggestions. I'm in the process of sorting through different options. The car is mostly original, but does have some "off-year" parts: a fender, doors, original x-frame, with '51 Mercury body top half (original was too rusted to support convertible mechanism). Original flat-head (30,000 miles) and original radio, blue dot tail lights, newer top and boot, twin chromed glass pack mufflers. Here are some pics:

lovely car.. should be an easy sell if priced accordingly.. Hemmings has been around forever and works... Bring a Trail (BAT) is the new way of selling online... both are nationwide... it's summer time.. figure out a price a go to car shows with a for sale sign... provide as much information on the car as you can to help sell it.. good luck..

That’s a beauty and as I said in my earlier post that’s a rare car. That will be an easy sell the hard part is getting the market price on a car like that. Good luck and if you don’t mind let us know how it works out. That car is rare enough that a reputable and well advertised auction may be what it would take to get top dollar.

That looks to be in great shape. Gotta love a three-on-the-tree. I wouldn't bother with Craigslist -- I would list it in Auto Trader Classics, or Bring a Trailer. The suggestion to find a few local car shows and enter it with a For Sale sign is a good one, too -- especially if you can find an all-Ford show. You might even find you want to keep it yourself! Good luck!

1950 Ford Convertible? Classic for sure. My dad had one of them in the 60's, he traded one of his friends a Triumph TR3 for it, the TR didn't have enough room for me and my brother to go for a ride on a nice day. It was a bit of a heap, paint was all faded and the top wasn't that great, but it was the only car we had that would start and go up the drive in the winter. Problem with that? Hell yeah...it also had no heat!! I think my dad pioneered the concept of putting a brick in the oven before we went out and then setting it on the front floorboards!!

Good luck with your sale. Too bad you aren't closer. How about some pictures?

I researched previous Barrett Jackson sales, highest was $41,000 for cars with full frame off restorations. Down to around $15,000 for lower quality cars. Depending on the fine details, mileage, quality of paint, chrome and everything else, with national exposure, it could/should sell for $15-20,000. Need to remember there are seller fees with any/most of the online sites.

I bought a 69 Camaro in 69, Hugger orange, 396, Black vinyl top, 3 speed auto trans it cost 4340 dollars on the window sticker. It had 26000 original miles I tried to sell it in a local paper and could not. I ran it in Hemmings Motor news and sold it to the first call for more than I paid for it. Try them your convertable is BEAUTIFUL!! I got 2 calls after I sold it from the protecto plate and the last caller had 32000 dollars in it and it had just over 32000 miles. NOTE I sold car in 1981. I would contact Gateway Classics.
Although it is a consignment dealer they handle all the pics plus advertising.
They have dealerships all across the U.S.
i am not sure what or if there is a cost to you or to the buyer.
They have a dealership in Denver.
Good Luck!!
That is a nice car !!

Thank you everyone, for all the suggestions. Looks like i've got some internet work to do!
I really like the car, but don't have a place to park it, as I already have too many hobbies to try to accommodate out of a one-car garage.
I'll let you all know what happens.
