Some of the flag symbolism. A cross on an inverted crescent moon, or an anchor, are rather obvious. The snake represents wisdom. The bird (an owl, actually) biting the snake's tongue represents prudence.

We often speak on this forum about, "If this old revolver could talk". It's obvious on some of these flags that someone had a piece of cloth, a paintbrush, and some paint. They carried these flags into battle. They brought these flags back. If they could talk, they could tell a story.
