Default Those old Hollywood epics...what are your favorites?

I love old movies, especially those cast-of-thousands Hollywood epics they don't make anymore. You know the kind: great acting...soaring orchestral scores...no weird special effects...no computerized anything...and shot mostly on location in real places.

Here's a great scene from one of my favorites, El Cid. Charlton Heston at his best, Sophia Loren at her most beautiful, and one of the most intense knightly combat scenes ever set to film...

What are some of your favorites?

I was going to say "The Longest Day", but got beat! So I'll throw in " Midway" and " The Big Country".

Lawrence of Arabia.

Every now and then it is shown on the big screen, and I always try to go.

The only one I can think of that might qualify is "Sgt. York."

To Have and Have Not (1939?)

The camera just loves Lauren Bacall. add Bogart and you have a classic.

I second El Cid. What a movie. The Sand Pebbles was great. You old timers need to look up Never so Few. Had Sinatra, Donlevy, bronson, McQueen, Gina Lolabikini, Peter Lawford, Dean Jones, George Takai, William Smith, and lots more.

Despite the tiresome, really really tiresome
reference on this forum to Hollyweird, the
motion picture industry has done good,
real good. Just look at the picks right up
to the present time.

And enjoy.l.

JcMack mentioned The Grapes of Wrath. I had forgotten about that one.

A truly magnificent tale given true justice by the silver screen.

So many on here I agree with, no point in redundancy.

Here is one to add: 'Gunga Din'.

Another treasure. Kipling's brilliant poem entrusted to Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Jaffe. A masterful move.

How about throwing "Once Upon a Time in the West" into the mix. No doubt Leone's finest.

Like many of you on this thread, I love old movies. TCM is a must have on my screen. If the flick is black and white, so much the better.

When it comes to "casts of thousands" and "epics" as Beemerguy53 asks, I get a bit lukewarm. Most certainly they are spectacular. The biblical epics for sure grab my attention. But in general epics are overly grandiose for my interests.

The intimacy of a good black and white Film Noir pulls me right in and the world around me fades away. That hasn't happened with an epic. Might be because their large scale makes me feel more like a spectator instead of being inside the film.

If somebody can point me to an intimate, black and white epic, please do. I'll watch it at my first opportunity.

Cleopatra
I am always amused by Richard Burton's portrayal of Mark Antony. He plays him as a total jerk. I don't know how historically accurate that is, but I have to wonder how he was able to raise his own army with such a serious lack of charisma.

And I'll add this epic:

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World

While this might not meet this definition of epic film It is a 1957 B&W film that pulls you deep into the story and keeps you engaged there for the duration. "Paths of Glory". I view it as a smaller scale epic and has mesmerized me over decades.

Movie labels, genres and classifications can have blurry edges and might not fall where they are supposed to but we let then snare us nonetheless.

It is a Kubrick masterpiece.

Well, it's not an epic, but one of the best black-and-white films I've seen is Paris Blues, with Paul Newman, Sidney Poitier, Joanne Woodward, Diahann Carroll, and Louis Armstrong.

Two American ex-pats, jazz musicians living in Paris, meet two American girls on vacation there, with the complications you'd expect. The score is by Duke Ellington, the acting is superb, and it's a great story.

The first time I saw Paris Blues, I was hooked watching the opening...

While I like westerns none would make my top 10 list. Beemer picked one of my favorites El Cid, Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, The Agony and the Ecstacy, The Presidents Lady , The Buccaneer, Secret of the Incas ( the real first Indiana Jones) Godfather/ Godfather 2, The Dirty Dozen, African Queen, True Grit, SgtYork, High Noon
M.AS.H., Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Shootist.

It is a Kubrick masterpiece.

I agree with that, Rusty! That film does pull you right in. It contrasts humanity and inhumanity. It both fascinates me and saddens me. The things man can do to man.

Although made for TV -

Saving Private Ryan

Band of Brothers

Both got accolades for their authenticity in depicting WWII soldiers, their uniforms, weapons and slang.

About 30-35 years ago at the Tulsa gun show I saw a vhs tape playing on one of the tables and it was a German bomber all shot up with nobody around to ask what the name of the movie was. It took me the longest time to learn what it was it was very realistic but after a few years I found out it was "The battle of Britain". Jeff

I particularly like the older sword and sandals movies; epics like Ben Hur, 12 Commandments, Spartacus.

I think many of the older musicals such as GiGi, The King and I (Yul Brenner’s version), My Fair Lady and The Sound Of Music are also epic films (Disney musicals aren’t in the same class).

It's a tossup for #1...Lawrence of Arabia or Dr. Zhivago. And as a runner up, sometimes I'm in the mood for Quintus Arrius saying "Row well and live"

The camera just loves Lauren Bacall. add Bogart and you have a classic.
I don't think it fits into the theme of a true "epic" with a huge cast and production, but it was the one that first came to mind for me as well.

A lot of folks need to learn the true definition of EPIC and then look up CLASSIC. Also saw some picks that were circling the drain when they came out despite the hype that the studios were putting on them.

My two favorite movies of all time are "The Quiet Man" and "Donovan's Reef", followed by "McClintock!" Hmmmm . . . I see a trend.

There are very few movies that I want to watch a second time. I've seen Star Wars twice in 45 years.

North by Northwest is one that I can watch again.

These lists probably won't be agreed with by the forum members. It is Imdb pages. Can't say I agree with some either.
