Those are both bits of advice that are well-considered, and I figured them both out on my own.

How a person treats folks who can't (directly) bite back is a good indicator of what kind of person you've got there.

Now, to bring this back to modern gunwriters, my general position was stated way back on page one. I think that, on the whole, they do a good job.

And I try not to be negative - because who really cares whether I have a low opinion of a given writer? It's just one fellow's opinion. But, now that we've been talking about Bassamatic's dad's advice, I've been thinking about how a writer's behavior can change my opinion of him.

I have to say that my opinion of one writer drastically changed after he mischaracterized web commentary about a product in order to be able to mock it instead of responding to the actual criticism of the product. I griped about it here, and it turns out that I wasn't the only one troubled by the column - by a long shot. To his credit, the writer came on the forum and responded, explaining himself, but the entire episode left a bad taste in my mouth. To the point where I no longer buy the magazines for which he writes, even though I very much like some of the other writers in those mags. I read both of those mags online now, but for the scrivenings of the writer in question - whose stuff I had very much enjoyed up until that point.

I suppose my point is that life is too short to read writers whose work one doesn't appreciate. Fortunately, I see a lot to like out there. But I don't understand what benefit anyone expects to derive from muttering about the fact that they don't like what they read nowadays.

Writers written words are their product. If one pays for a product and their not satisfied with what they’ve paid for should mum be the word I think not. Faint praise is considered to be the most damming. Who is not critiqued in what ever venue undertaken?

Well, there's that - but what's the purpose of criticism? It's potentially useful when done in the hopes of improving a product, but - while I respect a person's right to do it - I have no interest in hearing someone just kvetch.

No. And if you're thinking of who I think you are, he isn't a board member. Is he a former college dean who writes a lot about knives? I do know him pretty well, have for over 30 years.

We correspond a lot, and I'm almost sure that he isn't on any computer boards.

He does write some very practical articles for the average hunter or knife buyer.

He's the only scribe I know who still types his articles, although they have to be processed later onto his computer before sending them to publishers. He can use a computer, but is pretty sentimental about that old typewriter.

Is that a roundabout way of saying "I really prefer men"?

Texas Star, Yes I wondered about our friend, I haven't seen him in about 25 years. He used to shoot IPSC with the Texarkana Gun Club, and is a gentleman of the first order.

Thanks. I'll tell him that you said so. You can still see his work often in the knife magazines, less often in, "Gun Week."

He's retired from the dean's job, but still writes.
