Yes, you can take a pistol with you. As long as you are legal to own it.

Won't comment on the legal aspect, but if you are moving to New Orleans, you better get a LOT more than one handgun.
You might include a bullet resistant vest, a couple of shotguns, and AR-15 type, and a couple of back up handguns.
Then learn how to pray a lot.

But other than that, it's great.

Check recriprocity section - This, of course, is if you have a Michigan CPL. From what I've heard there is a lot of crime down there. I wouldn't go without one.

I've done a lot of business there. We couldn't get Baton Rouge lawyers to go there. Period.
NO was a cesspool before Katrina, and is worse now.

There is no requirement in Louisiana to register a handgun with the state or get a permit to own. I don't think there is one in NO.
I have 3 cousins going to work in NO and all are getting CCW permits.
If you are from out-of-state, you are well advised to get a CCW in your state and hope for reciprocity.

NOT entirely true at all.
It is like any other city - it all depends on where you go.
My wife has been forced to temporarily live there for 2 years due to work (she is contracted through her company to the Army Corps of Engineers and is working on the Katrina rebuild on the public relations side).
She lives in the Garden District and I have spent much time there exploring the city. It is quite nice and has a lot more to offer than just the French Quarter.
Prior to visiting there, I was under the mistaken impression that the entire rest of the city is like the Ninth Ward --- it is not.
Go there and prepare as you would moving to any big city. Find out where to go and where not to go and you will be fine.

I used to live there. The Garden District, St Charles, French Quarter, Audabon Zoo, Lakefront, Mothers, Brennans, Commander's Palace, Fitzgeralds and it goes on and on. That was then...I wouldn't touch the place now with a ten foot pole. I certainly would not be caught unarmed anywhere within 100 miles of the city.

well...here goes I spent the first 30 years of my life in New Orleans and still maintain a lot of ties so I thing I speak with authority.
New Orleans used to be the Belle of the South-now she is more like a 60 year old stripper who thinks she is a "cougar". One saving grace is that she can still cook wonderful meals.
I wish I had a street map cause then I could redline the areas to stay away from. Primarily stay out of what is referred to as "central City" and the lower 9th and New Orleans East-all red zone areas, and fortunately areas that you would never go to anyway unless you had a very good reason. The Garden District, University/Audobon Park areas are yellow because of their proximity to the red zone of Central City. Carrolton area is a definite yellor-orange zome primarily due to a few DMZ pckets, known as Black Pearl, and the area that stretches fron Carrolton Ave to the Jefferson Parish line. Lakeview/city park area is pretty green but does go to yellow as you move east of City park-The Esplainade area is definitely orange to red-mainly do to it's proximity to a few pockets of DMZ that are offshoots from the central city area. The lakefront and West gentilly areas are pretty safe but the farther east you go the more it starts going yellow. As far as neighboring Jefferson Parish you are fairly green as long as you stay North of Airline Highway. Buck town/west end is a great place to live but good luck finding something there. Old Metairie is the best-but you ain't got the money for that pardner Forget about St. Bernard Parish, they are still trying to recover from Katrina. I, at the risk of offending, would also advise against living on the West Bank of the Mississippi, unless that is where you will be working-if so, I would reccomend lower Algiers or Belle Chasse.
I do not go to New Orleand unless I am armed.
If you want, drop me some contact info, and I'll try to get a city map and some markers and some Turbo dog and red, yellow, green line it for you-Hell I might do that anyway and get a copyright on it
One last thing, ANYWHERE on the Northshore is GREAT!!!

I have been to New Orleans 3 times on business trips. Once before Katrina and twice after. Loved it all 3 times, but before Katrina was best. Stayed near the French Quarter. Walked all over, never had any trouble. Mostly on Bourbon Street at night. Loved the food. Grew up in Washington, D.C. Maybe that gives me a different perspective. Want to go back on my time and see where they make Tabasco sauce, will definitely spend a few days in New Orleans.

I have fond memories of living in the suburb of Metairie in my single years. Marshall, if you are single it will be fine if not outright fun. If you have children you are going to have trouble finding a decent school. The one concern is if you need serious medical care, it would be a good idea to get that elsewhere.

Caj,
I wanted to thank you for your very thorough advice about where not to go in NOLA. I just spent last week there with the wife and granddaughter and had a great time - NOLA does cook well. As advised, I went armed (legally).
Still, no place is completely safe. We were walking to Brennan's for breakfast Wednesday morning, and at the corner of Royal and Conti, we had to step around the large pool of dried blood from the previous evening's shooting. They had it cleaned up before we walked back. Don't want to startle the tourists.
Buck
