I got lucky, as I was only 27 when I got laid off and was able to let the the government pay for my electrical schooling and RHVAC school. Getting into the Steamfitters was the best thing that ever happened from all that hell.
Bad memories turned good. I'm glad it worked out for you, ACORN. Good luck at your new digs. The first thing I thought of was that nice house with the new metal roof and the flag pole. It actually made me sick to my stomach, what with all the bad memories of losing everything back in the 80s. Even the music sucked!
I was stationed in Pittsburgh not to long after the mills closing. Lost of folks hurting for jobs. houses lost and some turned to theft. Was offered a three bedroom two bath home by a Doctor who had moved to NC. The asking price was $25K, when I got there I asked the guy I was replacing about the pricing. Found out it was a Section 8 area and was told to look elsewhere. Got a place in Monroeville instead, not a bad drive to CMU.

It don't take much to realize that GOOD HELP is very hard to find these days. If your a producer, somebody some where NEEDS you.

Myself and 2 of my brothers went into the piping trade. When we started out we figured out that the reality is that 20% of the people accomplish 80% of the work. We stayed in that 20% an now we are all around the 70 year mark. We are don't move around so well any more, climbing and crawling around in the pipe racks is pretty much over. Employers don't care, they want us, we think before we act, we set an example, not much we haven't seen or dealt with. The last job I was on my boss told me to keep my hands off the tools.

…and that one account comes with a lot of fine print. I had to have it almost literally pounded into my head. Luckily I had a good public defender for when I sort of used my teaching powers on a lousy student’s body. The 80s were a bad time. Real bad.

Sorry ACORN, and everyone else who knows, it’s not like Nam or anything like that, but we got lucky and lost our lives, but the lives we lost we were able to get “do overs” if we took advantage of the government programs. I took advantage. Many of my friends took the “airline made of snow” as Hoyt Axton penned it, made popular by John Kay.
Man I’m glad things are looking up ACORN!

I don't have a job anymore. Have retired from two different careers. Now I shoot three days a week.

Best of luck to all!

Hey bud,

This sucks hard.

But I've been reading your posts for years and "You've got this".
If 20% do all the work, they will always find work. You're one of that top 20%. It will come. Even in the worst of times, the hard-working with talent will always rise to the top.

When I was still a boy, my step-dad worked at a petroleum refining plant for 40 years; and the month before retirement, they gave him notice.

I decided right then and there to work for myself. I was broke a lot, but I never got fired. It still kicks me in the stomach when I read these stories.

Prescut
Oh, I heard original Steppenwolf play in LA around 1969-70 fronting for someone I forget. The concert ended with a police riot where they chained the fire doors and just started beating attendees with clubs. I think it was Mayor Sam Yorty who said "No damn rock and roll in LA".

Well if I wern't worth a "darn", why was I needed so bad?
