Default What foam?

I'm planning to convert a couple of old hard-sided briefcases into range cases for pistols. E.g., one will be for a Model 41, with extra barrel, magazines, optical sight, etc.

What type of foam should Ibe looking at? What type should I avoid? I don't want one that will break down from contact with gun oil. or deteriorate merely from passage of time.
Suggested sources of suitable foam?

TIA

PS: forgot to mention that the original factory box for one of the Model 41s has a foam bed with cutouts for the pistol and spare mag. No rust there, ever.

I believe you can get the High Density Egg Crate Foam on Amazon or Ebay that is used in standard gun cases.

I converted a couple of old briefcases to carry my S&W Silhouette Pistols in 1980. The foam I used was the typical gray in color, waffle type, pretty tight cell foam that electronics and etc. was shipped in. I worked for a Cadillac Dealership and had plenty of foam available from boxes shipped to our parts department. My guns look the same today as they did in 1980. I haven’t done any research on foam to see what’s available for firearm storage in this day and time. The reason I post in your thread is because when you mention using foam to store guns, you will get lots of naysayers on the subject and people that have had problems. In the early 80’s I shot my Silhouette guns a lot and as the hobby faded about 1985-86 my pistols have been kept in the same foam lined briefcase. They are not shot as much anymore. They each are oiled, wrapped in red mechanics rags, and wrapped in anti rust paper and I’ve never had a problem and they’ve been in the same briefcase for 43 years. I’m not saying all my pistols are stored in foam cases because they are not. I’ve got lots of regular pistol cases or gun rugs as they’re called. I’m sure that there’s foam pieces available for firearm use, I just wanted you to know it’s safe for gun storage if used correctly.

I bought a piece of 2" thick memory foam for a twin size bed from Amazon years ago to replace the worn out foam in a few cases.

It works great, you don't have to cut anything. It gets dirty thou.
