OK, this is not sitting well
A month ago, I moved all my handguns to Georgia. Now I am back up in RI for the summer, and I do not have a pistol or a revolver. Got to think this situation through.
Mods, if this belongs somewhere else, please move

Pete-You have a couple options. I don’t know state law there but:
1. Buy a long gun
2. Buy from an individual face to face gun show or Armslist.
3. Get a whistle and blow loud if you get attacked.

I would suggest not worrying about it and potentially surviving this short period of not having your guns.

Got a child who might be coming to visit and who could bring a loaner? (Even better if the loaner was originally yours...)

1 .22 rifle or shotgun for each adult traveling with you.
( Assuming it is legal for non-residents to have such things in their possession ).

Well, we are not the most gun friendly here, but it is not really hard to get a permit. You have to take a simple common sense test at LGS, have a 10 round limit, and have a 7 day waiting period. That is pretty much it. There are states that are much worse. I still have a RI license
I do have a riot gun here, but I prefer a handgun.
As for gun shows, we do not have them here. CT and MA no good either.

Georgia has a beautiful coast as does SC. SC is about as gun-friendly as it gets. In both states, taxes are lower, gas is cheaper, people are friendlier, and the women are better looking than in RI.
But then I also understand your geographical location is sometimes a balance of many factors. At least it is not a high-crime state.
Maybe an M1 Carbine would be a nice addition to the stable since you are RI legal. Or an inexpensive 22 auto. You have to be careful that they are ammunition friendly, I like my Walther P22 and carry it often> I had an s&w 22A than never fired 5 rounds without a ftf regardless of ammo

Maybe Mossberg Shockwave but keep close the letter from ATF (included in box) that states this is legal and not a SBS. Lotta LEO's don't know. What a fun and handy blaster.

RI has beautiful coastline. My place is in Savannah. The coastline is pretty, but it is all marshland and not accessible because of the mud. I still have to make the determination on whether or not it is really cheaper. Food is not, electricity is. Who ever heard of tax on clothing. . The registry wants a one time 3 or 4 % of the value of your car to register it .
Misc labor is cheaper. Seafood is terrible, at least what i have had. The deli counters in the Publix and Kroger stores are very limited. Too much prepackaged stuff. Took back some provolone I bought.. Taste and texture was awful. Example: Boiled ham 7.99/lb here. Same brand 12.99 in GA
Humidity is a killer, as is the temperature. Went into an LGS the other day, prices were very high, and nothing I want, looking forward to gun shows. Went to highly rated Italian eatery, and was served egg noodles and ketchup.
Need to check out the womens.
The jury is still out on if I will be a long term resident

I would not get anything that looks too radical.
No AR’s, no Shockwaves, no cut-down double barreled shotguns.
Think “ Low Profile “.

Savannah is a beautiful tourist area, but would likely be too hot and humid for my wife during the summer.
The Mighty Eigth Airforce Museum is great if you are into that sort of thing.
Back to your problem. Do you have a RI CCW permit and are you still a resident? If so, you shouldn't have an issue buying a gun.

Agreed! The shotgun sounds nice, but i could care less about the others. I will defend your right to own an AR, but they are something I have never liked

No CCW. Had one for 40 years. Hardly ever used it. Still a resident. 7 day wait, and I can have whatever I want

SC is gun friendly, but not to non residents. NC is less friendly in general, but treats non residents much better. I can carry in NC on my MA LTC, but can not in SC. Nor can a non resident get a CCW permit unless they own property in SC.
I've taken the course for a CCW, but my son and I have yet to find a suitable piece of land to buy which would qualify me as a property owner.

As long as it's sufficient to be able to have it in your home, then you are in a good position.
It took me about five years to finally get to the point where I could apply for a CCW in RI. The process isn't difficult, but it's a bit fiddly depending on in which town one applies.
I did the range qualification in MA and filed the paperwork in Cranston. Took about three weeks from when I dropped the application off until I was down there getting my picture taken and permit issued.

Hi OP, I’m relieved to know you at least have the riot gun handy. But like yourself, I’m a hand gun guy first. I honestly can’t imagine putting myself in this situation.
You know what must be done, happy shopping.

Never been to the GA coast, so I withhold judgement. However, every coastal state resident should visit the SC coast at least once so that they understand what will happen in their state if developers become their own branch of government. Personally, I would stick with RI.

Just wondering...what is not 'radical' with firearms nowadays? Radical in the eye's of who? Beholder? If legal get what you're good with. That's what matters...

Pete, Thanks for the information. The New England coastline is beautiful. Georgia and SC are humid on the coast. That is why I live in the upcountry. And we do not get the hurricane evacuation, just the evacuees. Winter in my previous home states Ohio and Pennsylvania sucked. I do think winter in RI is harsh, although there is not much of a hurricane season.
Gary S I believe SC has reciprocity on CWP with 33 states. I do not know about "wolkenkuckucksheim". but SC does issue permits to land owners. There are 17 states w/o reciprocity either because they do not recognize the SC CP program or because they do not have training requirements on their CWP. I do not think they are hard on nonresidents: most states do not issue CWPs to non-residents. The situation with constitutional carry states for reciprocity is somewhat tricky because of non-reciprocity when there is no CWP or CCW in the state in question.

Since you retain your RI residency, I think just buy whatever handgun you prefer and leave it in RI when you go to Georgia. Perhaps store in a safety deposit box at your local RI bank branch.
