GE APPLIANCE RANT!
This morning I tried to order 3 new GE refrigerator water filters from the GE parts department. They sent me a 15% discount code over the weekend and I wanted to get the real deal GE filters rather than the Chinesium knock offs sold at discounted prices on eBay. Who knows what they put in the Chinese filters? The genuine GE filters are made here in the USA - for whatever that is worth.
I went online and tried to order them however their website would not allow me to enter my 15% discount code which they sent me. It also kept adding freight to the free freight offer when you get 3 or more filters! OK - after getting really frustrated, I decided to call them instead and order over the phone. I called them and of course they have the prompts, push 1 for this, 2 for that, etc. I finally get to the prompt where they ask me to push 2 for refrigerator filters and the prompt does not work. They keep repeating push 1 for this and 2 for that. No option to get a live customer service person or a call back. Finally I gave up!
I did a search and Home Depot carry's genuine GE filters and discounts them for 2 or more. I also had a $20 off coupon from HD which they mail out every once and a while. Long story short, I ordered 3 of them from HD at about a $15 savings over GE even if their coupon code and free freight had worked.
Add in to the mix that my GE refrigerator had been replaced by a brand new one after 2 days of moving into our new home and 4 repairs done to the second unit to get it working right. Our GE dishwasher had to be replaced within the first week, our GE washer has been repaired twice and our GE microwave was shipped incomplete and we had to wait months for the missing accessories that were supposed to come with it.
GE SUCKS!!!!! When they break, I will buy Whirlpool appliances as I have always had great luck with them. GE is now a Chinese owned Company.
Well at least I now feel better - rant over!

We have a GE refrigerator. Bought it new when we bought the house a couple of years ago.
My solution to replacing the $60 water filter every six months/year/whatever was to turn off the water line into the fridge and keep a pitcher of water from the sink chilling in there. Fortunately, our local water is fine for drinking.
That filter is a rip off.

Yep feel your frustration. As an oldie & tech challenged rather call on phone or in person but phone's a challenge with push this push that & hitting dead zone. Find local if can & go get. DIY'ers face obstacles maybe intended. Amazon's stuff with home delivery usually works tho.

GE Appliances division was purchased by Qingdao Haier in 2016. I owned a few Haier window air conditioners prior to 2016 because they were cheap. They lasted about a year but they do make excellent boat anchors. I bought a new Maytag fridge a couple years ago and it was DAO. After 2 repair trips from a technician, I gave up and fixed it myself. I don't what brand of Appliances to buy anymore.

Been seeing ads for a pet supply mail order company. To get your business they would give you $20 off your first order if you bought $50 worth plus free shipping. Did what they asked but code for $20 off would not work. Guess they didn't need my business after all. I have gotten where every time I need to order something I check both Walmart online ordering and Amazon. Sometime there is a large difference between prices. However sometimes they are the same. Easy to check and Walmart shipping can be faster if you don't have Amazon Prime.

The best local repair tech in our area - we've been using him for years - says never buy a GE appliance. We had already had that lesson after we first moved here and our fairly new GE dishwasher went on the fritz. It was still under warranty, but after hours/days of telephone battles they finally just told us they wouldn't honor the warranty and wouldn't send an authorized repair tech either. They suggested we contact the place we bought it to see if they would give us a good price for the repair.

I run a whole house filter with tighter microns than my Frigidaire filter. I just push the "I changed it" button when it changes color.

For what it is worth in the last two years I have bought a new Frigidaire dishwasher and a new Whirlpool range. The dishwasher is a piece of junk but the range is just great. Your experience may be different

The same top-notch repairman that told us not to buy a GE appliance also recommended against LG and Samsung.

Our three year old LG washer and dryer take a beating with this household and still perform admirably. The washer was made in America and the dryer in Mexico. No complaints.
GE Aviation and the GE Engine Test Cell are both boons and blessings to their respective communities here.

I had a beautiful, metallic silver front load Samsung washer and dryer that had a paint job better than a lot of nice cars. Problem was, both needed very expensive repairs and after about 4 or 5 years I threw them away. The appliance repair person said all their techs laugh about how Samsung's are so poorly engineered. Often you have to break a functioning part just to get the broken part underneath it out.

I knew a man whose father worked for GE, an engineer, in his 18th year he completed a project ahead of schedule and below budget, received lots of praise, a generous bonus. In his 19th year, with his pension vesting date of 20 years coming up, he was given the boot. I am going through my supply of GE lightbulbs, otherwise I buy nothing marked "GE".
Bought a GE labeled/Made in PRC a/c at a yard sale years ago, lasted 300 days. Paid $20.00 for it. The GE marked/Made in Thailand unit I have in my bedroom, 9th summer, paid $45.00 at a Goodwill.
In 1972 I paid $200.00 for a Philco/Ford window unit, weighed a ton. 20 summers, one thing I like was the filer was simply a piece of mesh, bought more at the hardware store, when one got dirty, pulled it out, cut another to fit. Rinsed out the first.

When we bought our current house, it came with GE appliances. They are all from 2014 and already had more issues than the older appliances we had in Oklahoma.

I guess once upon a time GE made some good appliances. In my last house, I had GE washer and dryer I bought back in 1986. I left them in the house when I moved out in 2005. I had one repair on the washer in all that time and none on the dryer.
When I had this present house built, I had a GE washer and dryer installed. I was kind of taken aback by all the electronic controls as opposed to the mechanical knobs and dials on the previous set. With the life span on the prior applicances I was a little put out when I had to replace the washer after only about 8 years. But for right now both are chugging along.
Now in the interest of transparency I have to say that my appliances are subjected to a lot less stress than normal since I never used them in a family situation.

We are in the process right now of having our water tested and after we get the analysis we will figure out what type of filtration system we need. In my last house I installed a whole house filtration system and all was good - I just need to figure out what we have to filter and then get the appropriate media to do that.
As far as GE appliances are concerned, I'd never buy another! We had no choice when we purchased this house, that is what came with it. Once these are shot - I will get another brand, probably Whirlpool which we've always had good luck with. Heck, GE can't even create a working website or hire someone to answer a phone call! PATHETIC!

We stopped paying the high prices for GE filters and order American made filters from Discount Filters. I'd rather buy local and in person from local supplier but they are way to high. Refrigerator filters and furnace filters are quality made products at D F and they ship very quick.

We bought a new GE refrigerator a few months ago, replacing a 20+ year old one. We have been getting all kinds of mail from GE wanting us to get a GE service plan. The many plans were offered on a monthly basis. I started looking at the actual cost of the plans. By paying for the GE service plan for 5 years (60 months) you could have bought a brand new refrigerator for what you spent for the service plan!

My GE Profile refrigerator blew the "Mother" circuit board. While researching on You Tube, I found many videos on how to replace it (not hard to do) and where to buy the board online. In reading the comments of the video, it became obvious this is a BAD problem for these units. Some people replaced the board multiple time before giving the refrigerator away as they couldn't sell it in good conscience. Last time I will ever buy GE.

The change filter light is not connected to the filter in anyway, light comes on every 6 months or so , so you buy one. 48 years working on appliances.

My first unit when we moved into the house here failed within 24 hours of being plugged in. The compressor went. Since I raised hell about waiting 2 weeks for a replacement, they gave me a brand new unit. That one has since had three new mother boards, new shelves, and two new momentary contact switches for the door lights. Apparently, the door switches also have a micro circuit in them that controls other things as well. Over the last 4 months the fridge is running OK.
Given the facts that we also had issues with the dishwasher, microwave, and washing machine I'd say GE has about the worst QC of any appliance company I've seen yet.
The only GE appliances we have that seem to be working as designed are the oven and the stove cook top. When our model was originally offered we had a choice to upgrade to Whirlpool appliances however when we actually signed the contract they eliminated the upgrade and we had no choice. As the GE appliances no longer work, unless it is something I can repair myself I will just replace them one by one. I did not bother to take out the extended warranty on any of them as I truly do not want to spend another penny on them. I have even given thought to replacing them early before they go bad and selling them. I just don't think it's worth the effort as anyone who does their homework on appliances before buying would never buy these. Oh - BTW, these appliances are not the bottom of their line-up either!! I can just imagine how they are!

Signature Series?
My brother worked for GE in Kentucky, on the assembly line some years back. When the Chinese bought the appliance unit, he quit after working there for another month saying the work environment and quality of materials being used was going downhill.

We bought a new in-wall GE double oven about 6 years ago, has worked OK so far. But we had no choice other than GE. They were the only maker of an oven having the dimensions that would fit into our kitchen oven opening. Otherwise it would have taken a major carpentry job to enlarge the opening. If anything ever goes bad with that oven, we will have to keep it working instead of replacing it.
Regarding the refrigerator water filter, I do not understand why they are needed. We have an older Frigidaire refrigerator with ice maker and in-door water dispenser. It never had a filter, and we never had a problem. I have a friend who has a refrigerator with a filter. He buys the cheap filters and moves the RFID chip from the original filter to a new filter. Lots of refrigerator filter hack videos are on YouTube.

When we 1st moved here in '04, January, 1st thing I spent any money on was a set of stackable washer/dryer; GE. I had the extended warranty and used it 3 times. After the extension ran out, I had to replace the shock absorbers on the front load washer. I think they had to give me a pint of blood when I got done. The washer threw a shoe again so out it went. I bought an expensive LG washer and it's much quieter than the old one. Never had another problem...yet. The dryer went soon after and I bought an Electrolux. Never a problem with it, either. They run so smooth I don't need a mounting kit. I don't have water dispensers on the refrigerators, just ice makers. I bought an inline water filter that feeds both so the filter on the upstairs refrigeratorI bypassed. As mentioned, the Change Filter light is just run off a timer, same as my thermostat for the furnace air filter. I have a good air filter that gets changed maybe at 9-12 months. Contractors will set these timers for monthly Change Filter alert to make an extra shekel off people. No way would I ever do residential work, especially appliance repair. A 500 ton chiller is far easier to work on than any residential unit. The residential guys are the ones most often getting caught ripping people off, also. There's one company in the PGH area that advertises they'll clear any drain for $99, which usually ends up with a $20,000 total sewer line replacement. And people keep calling them! I sleep well, or at least I did when I worked for a living.
