Many of you know that I work for the DOD. I work at a maintenance shop on a military installation.

Monday I get a call. Two of our service vehicles are going to be replaced. Remove all tools, equipment, and storage. Then bring them to us.

So………….two of the guys come back with nice shiny new 2023 Ford Transit vans.

ELECTRIC ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And nowhere to charge them. Only 108 miles per charge.
UNLOADED!!!!!!!!!!!

Charge at 110V takes 96 hours.

Our government at its finest I tell ya.

Just saw on tonight's news that GM and Ford have made a deal with Tesla to use their charging stations. Apparently it may require a plug adapter?? (I know nothing about electric vehicle charging). Maybe this will help?

Our electricians are on it. Might take a little while though.

I think the USPS has the goal to be all electric within 10 years. I saw something like 10K charging stations will be needed nationwide for USPS use alone. Most every town and city in the US will need at least one, and large population centers may need hundreds. What could possibly go wrong?

I saw something earlier in the week about a senior executive at Toyota making a statement that essentially said all-electric vehicles are a bad idea, and plug-In hybrids are far more practical and make more economic and environmental sense for numerous reasons. I have always felt exactly the same.

The 108 figure is unladen.
So far we've seen electric trucks fail miserably when tasked with actually towing things. Like a 70% reduction in range pulling a trailer.
If this carries over, would 30 miles and a four day recharge time be acceptable?

The Electric Vehicle mandate for the US Military doesn’t go into effect until 2027, and the rest of the country until 2037! It doesn’t mean that all combustion engine vehicles will be outlawed by then, only that combustion engined vehicles will be being phased out of service by their respective dates! If you can still find 100 octane gasoline for your 1967 Firebird or 1985+ ear car after 2037, you’ll be the exception and not the rule…

Double? We all only WISH it would just require doubling the capability of the current electrical grid. Unfortunately, that is a complete pipe dream!

It will take more like 7x-8x the capacity of our current electrical grid to replace the amount of power we currently get from the gasoline powering our cars.

If it only required doubling the capacity of the grid it would at least be a somewhat reasonable goal to try to meet.

But to replace the gasoline energy powering our cars with an equivalent amount of electrical power in the next 8-10 years would require increasing our current electrical generation and distribution capacity by approximately 700% - 800%. Basically we need to double our grid's electrical capacity every two years for the next decade or so.

It just isn't even remotely feasible. It took us nearly 100 years to build up our power grid to this point - and it isn't even able to meet current demand. We already have rolling blackouts/brownouts during times of peak demand! And yet we're going to build the grid up to 7 or 8 times it's current capacity in the next 8-10 years? REALLY? Even if the goal were to replace gasoline power with electrical power over the next 30 or 40 years, that would still be a VERY ambitious goal for us to to try to meet.

But to try to do it in the next 8-10 years? That is a complete fantasy. It just isn't possible. Certainly not with low-energy density solutions like wind and solar. If we started building nuclear power plants, and beefing up the grid to handle all that additional power generation TODAY, we might "get there" in about 30 years or so.

Otherwise, it is all fairy dust and unicorn farts.

But by God the powers that be SAY that we're GOING to do it somehow - even if it isn't technically feasible. Though of course they don't even try to tell us HOW they will pull off this miracle!

Hybrids seem like the way to go now. A tiny engine that keeps the battery charged. Actually cuts pollution and gas usage without any change in infrastructure. Makes too much sense.

How much tax money do they generate for the government when filling the battery?

I heard and interesting statistic yesterday. The total generating capacity of proposed solar/wind plants awaiting approval exceeds the current generating capacity of the entire country.

In the small town I live in, there is presently only one charging station downtown for EV. A Hyundai dealer about 5 miles away is installing a couple of charging stations at the dealership, but I don't know if the units will be available to the public or just for autos they sell. Bottom line, the infrastructure does not exist in Mississippi to support EV operation. There are several Air Force and Army installations in the state. If they are forced to switch to EV, it will be difficult for operations. A friend and former co-worker nearby just bought a Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid. I think that's the best option here.
