This came about because they implemented a policy requiring students and parents to be responsible for their children's absences and missing homework. I remember a story that Mr. Palmieri, my high school Spanish teacher told.

A parent was complaining to him about her child's grades. Finally he said "look, lady, I"ve got $50,000 of teacher's liability insurance. If you don't shut up and go away, I'm going to use $25,000 on your face."

Mr. Palmieri was an excitable little Italian gentleman.

I used to get automated calls from a Dallas High School that my student was absent from the school that day. Except I had no student attending the high school. I never found out whether the school didn't update their records, or whether the student gave false phone numbers. I did actually call the school once and explain the problem, and that seemed to stop it for a while, but then it started up again.

When I lived in a suburb of St. Louis, an elementary school principal called and left several messages regarding my child having behavior problems at the local school.

At first I thought it was just a wrong number, but the calls persisted so I finally got tired of the messages and called to tell him we didn't have a kid at his or any other elementary school. (Apparently, someone just took our phone number and address out of the phone book so their kid could go to this school.)

The guy wouldn't believe me! Must be parents just lie and say "what kid?" a lot! He kept telling me I had to come in for a meeting. I finally told him "Beat the kid senseless, I won't say anything." The phone calls stopped.
