I've been reading about the scarcity of semiauto handguns (and rifles) and ammo for them. But are 4", 5", 6" revolvers getting scarce too? And their ammo? (Don't use semiautos except plinkers but will soon need a new revolver or two!) Thanks .... adk44

Well, revolver ammo is sure scarce right now!
The shops I frequent seem to have plenty of revolvers currently, but there never seem to be enough S&Ws. Plenty of Taurus and Ruger revolvers. Oh yeah, and some with a rampant pony stamped on them, whatever those are.

Depends on where you look, I guess . . . most have no trouble finding what they want, with the exception of all the ammo or loading supplies they need/want at the moment.
"Shortages" of popular handguns have been in effect since I started in the sport almost 40 years ago. Used to be driven to a great extent by the companies fronting pre-production models to gun magazine writers who splashed them all over the covers and did their best to convince us we couldn't live without them, only to find out they wouldn't even be available for a year or more and then at limited quantities. Create a big back-order demand and frenzied sales before they even hit the streets.
Unless you're into modern Colt revolvers (since they are out of production) S&W and Ruger, and a couple of others are still cranking out plenty, though some of us prefer the older models before political correctness and attempted lawyer-proofing . . .

I don't know how "scarce" they are, but you sure don't see as many of them available now as in the past.
The manufactures are cranking out the "tupperware" semi autos. That's what's selling.
Personally, I prefer a revolver, but what I want is just not coming from the manufactures.
I believe the ones out there that come up for sale are snapped up by guys like me for safe keeping? They don't last long in the display case at the gun shop.

Revolvers per se have never been scarce. Classic revolvers have always been somewhat scarce and expensive. For example, a S&W Model 19 snubbie P&R is scarce. A S&W Model 642 isn't. Seems tons of S&W Model 36's out there. Ammo is a horse of a different color though...

Around here they are. Unless you want a Taurus or some sort of Italian made cowboy clone, there's not much else around. If something like a Model 10 or 36 comes up, or any older Smiths or Colts, even if priced on the high side, it doesn't sit on the shelf long.

Lots of used revolvers in my area.
Depends on how much you want to pay for 'em....
Smiths/Colts are way high no matter what they are.
Rugers are high also compared to "a year or so ago".
Taurus & the like are less money and move very well, not lasting long on the inventory it seems.

I wouldn't even be so quick to say that revolvers are scarce, unless you're looking for really mint old stuff. Used revolvers in mid-90% condition are usually either cheaper than new revolvers, or MUCH cheaper than new revolvers. The 1968 law and some of the state laws have made it a pain in the posterior for buyer and seller to connect, and have added expense to the transaction, but prices themselves are still pretty reasonable.
Leastways, that's how it looks to me.

Yes, revolvers have become very scarce here in my neck of the woods. The few gun stores that we have in my very "unfriendly to guns" state have next to nothing in them in the way of handguns these days .
The dealers have told me that folks have been coming in with pockets full of money, looking to buy used semi-auto pistols. When they discover that the store has no bottom feeders to sell them, they just spend their cash on revolvers instead.

This is BHO at his best.Let's scare the country that he is going to ban all semi autos and give the perps some free advice on not leaving evidence.Hey criminals just use a revolver during those armed robberies and you keep the cartridges that have those pesky firing pin impressions that can be tied to your gun....The only thing he is doing is giving the criminals added job security.......God Bless......Mike

A buddy of mine that works at a gun shop in Millington, TN called me Saturday and said that they had just taken a Model 60LS 357 in on trade. I was about twenty minutes from the store. By the time I got there the buyer was filling out the last line of the 4473. He paid new gun price plus a few $ for a used gun. All I got was the ammo that he would have bought with the gun, four boxes of Fed 125 gr JHP.
Yes, they are scarce in these parts for a good or better quality revolver. Ammo, even more so.
