Few weeks ago I saw 2 PPD officers in a wagon do a traffic stop. Both wearing thigh holsters. I agree that while it may look militaristic it's sure helps spread the weight and gear around.

That's a couple of reasons why I liked the Detective Bureau so much. No need to carry all that stuff around and not being a slave to the radio anymore...

My chiropractor knows most of the PD....that is a clue.
As someone mentioned, besides the added weight/girth of all the equipment, the usable passenger compartment of vehicles is getting smaller. Especially when you add cages, long guns, radios, lights/siren boxes, laptops & mounts and in some cases printers for reports & cites. Even Tahoes are crowded.
And for some reason, the wrap around seats are built for someone much thinner than me. My holster & radio touch the seat but my back doesn't. I've found most dealerships will provide LE with seatbelt buckle extensions to get the buckle up from between the seat & whatever is mounted next to it.
BTW: i'm 6'6"/235 lbs & wear a 38" belt. So I don't think I need to be looking for a diet. Besides, how would I carry all the stuff the OP mentioned.
