This afternoon the American Rifleman magazine shows up and what gun is on the back page, "Technical I have this old gun" section? Yep the Marlin 39A Golden Mountie. It says condition = 98 percent, value = $350-$375. After spending some time on gunbroker looking at these model 39's I think the gun broker people must not have received the memo on the value being $350-$375.

I see one maybe two (regular 39A) with starting bids at $475, which if I wanted to play the auction game and got one for that much or not much more, the ffl fees would put it near the local new 39A at $530.

There are two current auctions for mounties, one with starting bid at $400 and one at $585.
A review of closed auctions for mounties indicates one ending at $455. One ending for $380 on a kind of beat up one, and one ending for $700.

The other thing is I quite like the pistol grip stock on the 39A over the straight stock of the mountie, but I also prefer the 20" barrel of the mountie, and around and around we go.

I doubt attempting to cut the 24" barrel down to 20" would be very practical with the tube feed deal, front sight remounting, re bluing etc.

I suggest that you should seriously consider joining this group here at the High Road (Link below) and post a mention that you are looking for a 39A in excellent condition, preferably and Mountie. Some of these fellers have three or four stashed away; in these hard times, one may be turned loose... you may luck-out.

My only tube fed is the first gun I shot...

A Remington Fieldmaster mod. 572 that my father bought years ago for $5. I'm actually giving it some TLC right now.....

Pete,

I bought the Marlin 39A from him this evening. No pics yet as I am still in MO, but the SN is J52xx, it is almost mint, call it 98% or so, both wood and metal, if you had a box for it you could *almost* call it NIB; a great little .22. I also bought aforementioned Winchester 72 as well.

I wasn't planning on being in MO right now, but Dad had to have some surgery on Wed. and Mom wanted me to come up. I called Bill this AM and ran over to his house tonight after Mom and I got back from the hospital and visited with him for a couple of hours and bought a couple of nice .22's. Hopefully I'll be able to put a few rounds through these tomorrow morning before we make the trek back to the hospital.

My newest is a Henry .22Mag. It's a great shooter and the action is smooth as silk.

My favorite of all time is my .22LR Remington Nylon 66. It's almost 40 years old and can still shoot a Quarter sized group from 50 yards with the stock iron sights....plus it was made before Serial numbers were required on firearms, so it remains anonymous!

Good to hear Steve - You're gonna love that jewel. Post some pictures when you can. We hope your dad will be up and around soon, say Hi.

Just saw the Feb. '59 American Rifleman that reviewed the Nylon 66 and said that, although Remington did not mention it, the NRA staff found that it (They had 4 of them.) would feed shorts with only an occasional ftf. When it failed to feed a short, they simply retracted the bolt and continued to fire. I never heard of such a thing.

Regards,

Tam 3

Tam 3...looking at the Instructions for my Nylon 66 is says to use .22LR only...that's all I have ever used. I did install a new firing pin and springs about 2 years ago. The instructions also has a complete parts list with prices:
Barrel $8.00, Stock $15.00, Firing Pin Striker $1.00, Complete Trigger $1.00, Front Sight $1.35....prices I can afford!

Cool Tube .22's

I've had several makes & models. Now down to 2. A Henry Golden Boy that I won at Friends NRA Banquet and a vintage Winchester Model 61. Had a Marlin Model 39 for years that wound up in my sons safe. Never had a bit of trouble with any tube loaders, just kept 'em clean.
