Back in 1982 he made a little film called "Honkytonk Man". Check it out.

I just watched it and thought it was great. I would like to re-watch it and count all the names he had for his neighbors...

I'm not much of a film critic. But I still think the best film Clint ever made was "Play Misty for me."

You guys like all of his highbrow stuff. Me? I like the spaghetti westerns. I still watch "A Fist Full of Dollars" whenever I get the chance.

He was a rookie compared to my father in this department.

per usual, this movie has a lot of memorable lines. my favorite being when he stops the asian girl and white guy from being messed with. "You ever notice how every once in a while you come across someone you shouldn't of "messed" with? That's me."
on a side note, i did have the pleasure of eating at his restaurant in Carmel, CA this weekend after some adventuring in Big Sur. Really cool place with a great pale ale. Called Hog's Breath Inn.

Haven't seen Gran Torino, but I plan to. My personal favorite Eastwood flicks involve 6.5" 29-2's and a steely gaze. Sudden Impact just really stands out for me, in particular the infamous scene in the diner at the beginning.

Not best but maybe top 6 or 7: Good Bad & Ugly, Unforgiven, Millon $ Baby, Josey Wales, Dirty Harry, High Plains Drifter...all favorites to me. Why don't you just ask me which of my S&W's is the best?

I don't think this movie is up Clint's standard no more than I thought the Shootist was up to John Wayne's standard.
The Eastwood movies I liked are the Dirty Harry Series, the Westerns (Unforgiven, Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, Fist Full of Dollars, etc.), the War pictures likes Where Eagles Dare, Kelly Heros, Heartbreak Ridge, etc.
I watched Gran Torino and like the Shootist, watching it once is enough.

I guess it's a good film, and I sorta understand the ending for various reasons. I don't put it in his top 5, myself. Oh, with all his titles being mentioned, how come nobody said anything about "Breezy?" Just kidding, there. Wales was great, as the earlier Callahans were, and several others--hell, just too many to select a single one. I do know that through the '80s, even '90s maybe, he saw "Bronco Billy" as his own favorite.

My thoughts exactly.
I have to go with "Unforgiven"

GT was powerful, funny, and sad all in one, and really a great movie. But UNforgiven was in a category of it's own. When I saw it in the theatre and it ended, it struck me as something like Shakespeare would have done if he had produced a western; insights into the human heart and consequences.
He's quite a guy.

Ugh. Unearthing this thread makes me want to break things when I think of the ending. I loved it but I gotta go break something now. On a high note, I do love the get off my lawn bit and it will be in my quotes forever.

I can't watch this movie since my first car was a 73 torino. I should have never given up that car, my dad bought me that car for a total of 400 dollars with only 62,000 miles on it. I promptly proceeded to drive it like I stole it, live and learn I guess.

Missed this thread...
...the first time through, so I'll toss in my two-cents worth.
I thought the entire movie was predictable, very much like "The Shootist", or the final scene in "Zulu Dawn", where Lt. Colonel Pulleen doesn't defend himself against the Zulu warrior. He may have taken part of the story from "The Great Santini" (ultimate self-sacrifice at the end). And I'm sure there are more of this ilk.
The script was typical Eastwood, a la "Heartbreak Ridge". Grizzled veteran living beyond his time.
Not nearly as good as "Unforgiven".

Didn't like GT except to say I like all Eastwood movies, but this one will be on the bottom of my list. I definitely prefer his westerns especially Josey Wales, Hang'em High, Joe Kidd, Pale Rider, Unforgiven and High Plains Drifter. I also like the Dirty Harry films, but there are a few others like Iger Sanction, Firefox, Blood Work and Absolute Power that don't get much attention. Sort of like John Wayne movies, good ones and better ones, but always entertaining.

Why?
Better to die in a hospital bed after a LONG stay than to not only go out quickly, but screw some jerks over while doing it?
I can dig it - I don't like hospitals either.

Personally I think even Bridges over Madison County was better then Gran Torino! Unforgiven is right at the top though.

I like Eastwood (rewatched Bloodwork last night) but thought GT was as hokey a movie as I have ever seen, nowhere near his best work IMO.

A great movie! Yep, I think it's Mr Eastwood's best. The life message struck a cord with me.
What this movie should remind us, our greatest generation is passing away at rapped rate. Our WWII and Koren vets MUST be never be forgotten.

I would respectfully disagree....put a man or women in combat and their perspectives change. Just me.

I like all of Clint's work. Gran Torino is a good movie. Sandra Locke could have helped it though.

I haven't seen all of his movies, so I don't know if I would call it his best...but out of the ones I've seen (most of them, I think) it certainly is his best.
(I will add here that the older I get, the more I can identify with Eastwood's character in that film....)
